BITS researchers unveil eco-friendly material for future wearable technologies

Researchers at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus here, have announced the development of a metal-decorated 3D graphene composite using an eco-friendly laser-induced method for building low cost flexible electronics.
The research team has developed the laser-based in-situ method on lab-fabricated metal-polyimide films which is a flexible, engineered substrate that requires no toxic gases, harsh chemicals, or high temperatures.
The method is also compatible with other affordable and bendable materials like paper and fabric, expanding its utility for wearable, disposable, and on-the-go electronic applications, said department of electronics & electrical engineering and principal investigator at the MEMS, Microfluids and Nanoelectronics lab (MMNE), Sanket Goel, who supervised the research, on Thursday.
A key innovation in this work is the simultaneous integration of metal nanoparticles such as silver and gold within the polyimide results in a highly porous, conductive, and multifunctional graphene composite. The material has been successfully used to detect Vitamin C, demonstrated antibacterial activity and shows immense potential for use in fuel cells, supercapacitors, and biosensors, he said, in a press release.
'We have developed a fast, clean, and cost-efficient process that produces 1 mg of material in just five minutes, at an estimated cost of ₹0.07–₹0.13 per mg, depending on the metal used,' said research scholar Nishchitha NK.
'Creating this new material enables a future where eco-friendly fabrication methods can meet the growing demands of energy and healthcare systems,' said Dr. Goel.
The innovation aligns with global momentum around nanomaterials and flexible electronics, offering a scalable and chemical-free path to next-generation applications, he added. The team's work has earned a granted Indian patent and has been published in the international journal Applied Surface Science.

Driving the news: These add-on fees, charged over and above standard delivery rates, typically range from Rs 6 to Rs 30 per order, depending on city and demand. Crucially, they allow platforms to increase their take rates without adjusting base delivery fees, which remain subsidised to keep users engaged. Apps have also raised the minimum cart value, nudging users towards bigger baskets. However, this fee stacking has triggered a wave of user complaints about hidden charges. The government, too, has taken note — it recently flagged these as 'dark patterns' and asked these platforms to conduct self-audits. Blinkit posted a Rs 178 crore loss in Q4 FY25, while Instamart's losses touched Rs 840 crore in the same period. With aggressive discounting and high delivery subsidies weighing on margins, these charges aim to plug widening gaps in the business model. Zoom out: India's quick commerce market is projected to touch $31 billion by FY28. For now, though, growth is coming at the cost of profitability, even as regulators and customers push back against the tactics being used to fund it. Key details: The offer will include a fresh issue worth Rs 800 crore, alongside an offer for sale (OFS) of 48.5 million shares. Early backers Accel, Chiratae Ventures and Iron Pillar PCC would offload part of their stake in the OFS. JM Financial, IIFL Capital and Nuvama are advising on the IPO. Use of proceeds: Curefoods will use Rs 152 crore from the IPO to expand cloud kitchens, restaurants and kiosks, mainly for Krispy Kreme. Tell me more: Over 120 new mid-sized GCCs are expected to come up by the end of next year. Most of them will support functions across software, banking, finance, accounting, insurance, and retail. Robotics education is emerging as a crucial bridge between theoretical innovation and practical application. From smart manufacturing to national security, robotics is key to transforming India from a service-based economy to a technology-exporting powerhouse. With rising demand, robust government initiatives, and growing educational focus, robotics offers both financial promise and professional fulfillment. For today's students and professionals, investing in robotics education means leading tomorrow's tech evolution—far beyond just coding and programming The emergence of new-age digital technologies, especially in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) has led the world to emphasize these disciplines in a new light. However, while these technologies are projected to become the backbone of technological evolution in the coming years, their supremacy can only be established with physical means. For instance, AI's pinnacle of success could only be achieved through solutions that address physical challenges such as manufacturing, security, or construction to name a few. However, to undertake these challenges, integrating advanced robotics would be crucial. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Atal Tinkering Labs have proved to be a catalyst in this regard, being supplemented by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that has detailed robotics and STEM education in K-12 education space, creating a funnel for more advanced educational & research platforms. The objective of these introductions is clear — to establish a robust Robotics ecosystem in the country, that can be used by millions of talents, professionals and other stakeholders to drive the country's vision in the future, while also assisting them in garnering professional excellence and financial assistance. Robotics education: A catalyst for professional aspirations? While the concepts of Robotics are not really new, the emergence of AI is transforming it dramatically. The world is integrating the two technologies to create solutions that are not only superior but also transform how we perceive work irrespective of its functionalities. This is where trained professionals in contemporary robotics education will be of particular value to the national interest, while also bridging the present gap in the space. At present, a Robotics Engineer in India with a mid-level experience of 5 years, can earn up to 10 lakh per annum. However, it is a serious challenge for organizations to get professionals with ample experience and capabilities in the domain, offering a unique opportunity for talents. This concern can be essentially addressed by establishing a robust education in Robotics and its intricacies around the country. The Indian government and a few state governments are already working on making this a reality, however, the push must also come from traditional educational bodies like colleges and universities. However, this remains a long-term plan, and to address this concern at present, professionals can look to garner valuable training or knowledge via upskilling. The Indian EdTech space has already pointed this aspect out and has been offering supplementary courses that will help professionals hone their skills as per the industrial requirements. This can help professionals to integrate themselves into the industry by equipping them with era-appropriate knowledge, and capabilities and most importantly, creating a supply line of talents to the industry stakeholders. Looking Ahead The foundations are carefully being laid by the Indian public and private sectors for the creation of a robust Robotics ecosystem in the country. However, the long-term efficacy of the efforts will depend on the talents themselves, and their innovation will be the primary catalysts for evolving the space into a full-fledged sector to drive India's national ambitions. In the coming decade, more Indian talents must look beyond coding and programming, skills that would soon be engulfed with AI coming in as a more time and cost-effective solution and instead look for more innovative technological skills. Robotics would be the perfect suitor in this aspect and could prove to be the catalyst of the professional ambitions and financial incentives Indian talents are looking for in the long term.

Axiom Mission-4 Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the second Indian to reach space and the first to reach the International Space Station (ISS), spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sharing a glimpse of Indian culture and his awe-inspiring experience in space. During the interaction, Shukla revealed he brought traditional Indian treats—gajar ka halwa, moong dal ka halwa and aam ras—for himself and fellow astronauts, who all enjoyed the rich flavours. 'Yes, I brought gajar ka halwa, moong dal ka halwa and aam ras. I wanted everyone who has joined me from other countries to enjoy the rich Indian culinary. All of us had it together and everyone liked it,' said Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to PM Modi. Reflecting on his first view of India from orbit, Shubhanshu Shukla described the country as 'very big and grand.' He explained, 'Jab pehli baar Bharat ko dekha, Bharat sach mein bohat bhavya dikta hain, jitna ham map pe dekhten hain, usse kahin jyada bada (When we saw India for the first time, we saw that India looks very grand, very big, much bigger than what we see on the map).' Shubhanshu Shukla's statements seemed to echo a similar statement made by Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to reach Space. Rakesh Shamra when talking to India's then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has replied "Sarein Jahan se achcha, Hindustan Humara', when the latter asked him how India looked like from up above. Shubhanshu Shukla also shared the unique experience of witnessing 16 sunrises and sunsets a day while orbiting, adding, 'Our nation is moving forward at a very great pace.' From the International Space Station (ISS), Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla observed the Earth as a borderless entity. 'The first view was of the Earth and after seeing the Earth from outside, the first thought and the first thing that came to mind was that the Earth looks completely one, no border is visible from outside. When we see the Earth from outside, it seems that no border exists, no state exists, no countries exist. We all are part of humanity, and the Earth is our one home, and all of us are in it,' he said. As the second Indian to reach space, Shubhanshu Shukla expressed immense pride in the country's achievement. 'I am feeling very emotional and happy after having a conversation with you and 140 crore Indians. I feel very proud as India has reached the International Space is a collective achievement of the whole nation,' he said. Shubhanshu Shukla urged young people to persevere and dream big. 'The message I would like to give our young generation is that India has seen very bold and high dreams and to fulfil those dreams, we need all of you. There is no single way to success, but one thing that is common in every path is that you should never stop trying. If you adopt this basic mantra, then success may come today or tomorrow, but it will definitely come.' He added, 'I want to send a message to the younger generation that if you work hard, the future of the nation will be good. The sky is never the limit.' With India's first human space mission, Gaganyaan, entering its final phase, Shubhanshu Shukla is absorbing every lesson. 'I am confident that these lessons will be highly valuable for us and that we will apply them effectively in the coming missions,' he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the growing enthusiasm among India's youth for science and space exploration. 'There is a new enthusiasm to explore space... Today, children not only look at the sky, but they think they can reach it. This spirit is the base of our future space missions... We have to take Mission Gaganyaan forward, we have to make our own space station, and we have to ensure that an Indian astronaut lands on the Moon,' he said. Shubhanshu Shukla revealed that Indian scientists have prepared seven unique experiments for the mission. 'I can say with great pride that for the first time Indian scientists have prepared seven unique experiments which I have brought here to the station. The first experiment, which is scheduled today, is on stem experiment focuses on how we can prevent or delay muscle loss in space by taking a specific supplement. We will also see if these supplements can be beneficial for older people on Earth as well,' he explained.
