The supportive feel is great back sleepers and our side sleeping lead tester was surprised by how much she enjoyed the firm feel, although the One does have a tendency to sleep hot. While the current 20% off sale isn't the biggest discount, $799 for a queen (was $999), is a competitive price on a reliable memory foam bed (and a student-friendly price on one of our favorite mattresses for college students.)
4. Serta 12" Five Star Mattress: twin was $499 now $349.30 at AmazonThe new Serta Five Star Mattress is a budget hybrid designed to prevent lower back pain thanks to the use of zoned lumbar support. Even at full MSRP it is an affordable bed and the current Amazon deal makes it even better value for money. One of the few Prime Day deals still running, there's 30% off the 12" model, which is available in two firmness levels (plush pillow top and firm), knocking a queen size to $419.30 (was $599). We think that's a great price on a mattress made with CertiPUR-US materials and complete with a 10-year warranty. But this 'Limited Prime deal' might not stick around for long, so take advantage of the saving while you can.
5. Tuft & Needle Mint Hybrid Mattress: twin was $1,116 now $1,046.25 at AmazonThis hybrid mattress is built with specialist cooling technology akin to some of the best cooling beds of the year. It was slightly cheaper during Prime Day but the current offer is $40 less than the usual sale price (and you don't need to be a Prime member to save.)

Serta 10" Cooling Gel Memory Foam Mattress: twin was from $399 now from $303.99 at AmazonThe 10" medium-firm Serta Cooling Gel Memory Foam mattress is an affordable pick for side and back sleepers looking for pressure relief on a budget. There's up to 34% off at Amazon now, dropping a queen to $363 (was $549) and a king to $524.25 (was $699), which is outstanding value. Shopping at Amazon means you're getting the best price on this mattress right now (it sits at $378 for a queen size at Walmart).

Google's research indicates people save around 10% to 15% on their energy bills with a smart thermostat, which works out to an average savings of $132 to $145 per year. From early fall to the colder winter months, I saved around $10 to $15 per month with Nest's tweaks and by balancing my electricity usage with less costly natural gas heating. The Auto-Scheduling function does something similar, since it learns how I adjust the thermostat throughout the day and mimics my comfort preferences over time so I don't have to keep tweaking the settings. That makes it easy to adjust on the fly when the temperature feels about right, but you'd like to squeeze more savings out of the thermostat. Nest's Eco Modes also generate reports so I can see monthly progress and note any sudden problems or unexpected energy use. If there's a strange jump in energy use, the scheduling may be off, or you may be using electricity-hungry devices too much (my space heater and I are guilty of this). There's also a gamified "leafs" competition against other users that I don't care much about, but it's there for those interested. Satellite sensors and other ways to save Thermostat satellite sensors are one of the best inventions for home heating. Tyler Lacoma/CNET My Nest model also came with a satellite sensor, a little white puck that wirelessly transmits the temperature where it's placed to the thermostat. I can tell the Nest Learning Thermostat 4 to turn on or off based on its own built-in readings, on the readings of the satellite sensor, or a combination of both. Sensors like these help thermostats be more accurate based on where you actually spend time. For example, if I'm going to be spending the evening in a movie session at my TV or computer, I can bring the sensor along and when those heat-exhaling electronics heat up my personal space, the thermostat will take that as a sign to shut off early. The Nest thermostat smart home integrations are very limited, but that does make it easier to set up. Tyler Lacoma/CNET Then there are the peak hours programs, under names like Peak Perks, Rush Hour Rewards, Nest Renew from Google and other labels that indicate a partnership with utility companies. If your local utility supports these programs, you can join up and your Nest thermostat will make additional small changes throughout the day, avoiding the often-pricier peak hour energy use when possible. You give up some control of your thermostat with programs like these, which may displease some users, but it does enable you to save more. Many energy providers will also offer bonuses or rebates you can use to recoup the cost of an expensive thermostat even faster. A quick note about setup: If you're worried about installing the thermostat in your home, there's not much to fear from the process. I have a full guide here, but as long as you practice electrical safety and snap a picture of your current thermostat wiring, setting up the Nest Thermostat Gen 4 and getting it connected to Wi-Fi shouldn't be a problem, especially with Google Home app walkthroughs. It offers a plethora of energy-saving modes that users can pick from to rack up monthly savings -- most of them automated without requiring tinkering or calculators. I've even seen it available with rebates and free installation to speed up that payoff date. While Nest's circular thermostats have always had a flair for the dramatic, the Gen-4 model blows away the competition with a larger design that makes the most of its beautiful LED lighting and presence sensing to light up whenever someone walks past. The bright green leaf icon always shows instant savings for those who don't want to dive too deep into app management. Those who do want to explore the app will find settings for seasons, learning behaviors, weekly schedules and lots more.

Jeff Bezos picks retired Amazon exec as the new CEO of his $10B Bezos Earth Fund

(LinkedIn Photo) Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has pulled one of his former executives out of retirement to become the president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund, a philanthropic effort to help the planet. Tom Taylor worked for Amazon for more than two decades, retiring in October 2022 as senior vice president of Amazon Alexa and a member of the company's senior leadership team (S-team). 'I am thrilled to join the Bezos Earth Fund and lead with the bold mandate to invent our way out of Earth's environmental challenges with a combination of long-term thinking, technical curiosity, and excellent execution,' Taylor wrote today on LinkedIn. 'I am excited to work with Jeff and Lauren [Sanchez Bezos] to implement their vision and grateful to inherit an incredibly capable and mission driven team.' Bezos launched the fund in February 2020 and issued its first $791 million to 16 environmental groups later that year. The organization set a target of dispersing $10 billion by 2030, and has granted roughly $2.3 billion so far. Its diverse slate of programming includes focuses on land conservation, planet friendly foods, environmental justice, low-carbon energy and industries, climate tech innovation, monitoring and data, and financial markets. Taylor's appointment marks a notable change to the top spot, as the fund's top executives in the past had largely come from the environmental community. Andrew Steer, the former head of the World Resources Institute, was the fund's first CEO and president, resigning his position in February. 'Andrew has decades of experience in environmental and climate science as well as economic and social policy in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Africa,' Bezos said at the time of Steer's hire in 2021. A couple of months later, the fund brought on Charlotte Pera, who was previously president and CEO of the ClimateWorks Foundation. She departed the Bezos initiative in January 2024, having served as vice president and deputy CEO. When he announced his departure earlier this year, Steer said the fund had 'assembled some of the leading international experts in our field and built a team of some of the most passionate, imaginative, caring, and joyful staff I have ever had the pleasure of working with.' Taylor started his Amazon career as senior vice president of seller services, Amazon Payments and Fulfillment by Amazon. Prior to that, he was director of operations at K2 sports and was an engineer at Delphi Automotive Systems. 'After I retired from Amazon, I followed the good advice to consider this as 'Quarter 3' of my life and looked for an opportunity that balanced my desire for both adventure and service,' he said on LinkedIn.
