Elks look to end winless run, set tone for the rest of the season against Redblacks

Edmonton Elks quarterback Tre Ford still believes in his team's ability to set the tone for this season.
The Elks (0-3) are looking for their first victory when they host the Ottawa Redblacks (1-3) Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium. All three of Edmonton's losses have come by double-digit margins.
'It's still early in the season so we can still set the tone,' said Ford. 'This one's going to be really big. I don't like to use the must-win term, but I think it's definitely one we need.'
His twin brother, cornerback Tyrell, said he's not worried about the team being winless.
'I'm pretty sure last year in Winnipeg we started like 1-4, so I'm not worried,' he said. 'Once we all get together and play a full 60 minutes we're going to be tough to beat.'
The problem has been playing those 60 minutes. The fourth quarters, in particular, have been costly for the struggling Elks. In losses to the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Elks were outscored 27-7 in the fourth quarters. Although they outscored the Montreal Alouettes 22-10 in the final quarter, it wasn't enough to get a win in Week 2.
'It's where this team needs to grow,' Elks head coach Mark Kalim said of the fourth quarter. 'That's where we need all three sides of the football and somebody needs to step up and make the plays we need to win games.
'We need to find ways to make plays late in the game. That's what good teams do to win.'
Linebacker Josiah Schakel pointed to the final six minutes of their 36-23 loss to Winnipeg last week, when they were outscored 10-0 as a good example of the team's late-game problems.
'We can't play 55 minutes and then lose in the last five minutes. We have to make sure that the way we start is the way we finish. And don't make mental mistakes in key moments in the game.'
One of the big challenges for the Elks will be trying to stop Ottawa quarterback Dru Brown, who is looking for a record-breaking fourth straight 400-plus-yard passing game. After throwing for 413 yards and two touchdowns in the Redblacks' Week 1 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Brown missed three games with a hip injury.
'He's a gunslinger, he believes in his arm and he's going to throw the ball deep,' said Tyrell Ford. 'I know he wants to get that record for the 400 yards, but I think we're ready for him.'
Linebacker Nick Anderson backed up Ford's comments, adding that Brown has 'great confidence in where he can fit the ball. A lot of times he tries to fit the ball in tight windows because he has great receivers who can make the catches.'
However, Anderson added that because Brown throws often and likes to extend plays by scrambling, he also creates the opportunity for interceptions.
'We don't have any interceptions yet, so looking to get our hands on one of these for sure,' he said.
The Elks, who ended a record 22-game home losing streak late last season, are eager for a win to take off the pressure that's sure to build if they don't win.
'There's definitely pressure but there's always pressure to perform well,' said Tre Ford. 'Obviously 0-3 is not the way you want to start but, not to make excuses, but we've had a tough schedule.
'There's always pressure on the quarterback position, but I don't think it's anymore than it has been. You go out and play well everybody loves you. You go out and play bad, everybody hates you. That's how it goes.'

The are some things that Edmonton Oilers Head Coach Kris Knoblauch should not give a damn about: 9 Things

Article content With the draft and free agency now in the rearview window, the Edmonton Oilers have some runway between now and the start of training camp to contemplate, re-assess and strategize for the upcoming season. Article content In addition to the coaching staff decisions, will Stan Bowman decide to tweak any further? If there a 'hockey trade' is the future? Or is this the crew that they plan to go to war with? Article content Article content Article content 9. Oilers depth prospect Luca Munzenberger has signed with Kolner Haie of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Selected in the Third Round of the 2021 draft (#90, by Tyler Wright), the big D-man did not sign with Edmonton after his time at The University of Vermont. It is not unusual for a new G.M. to do some weeding. These were not 'his guys.' You see it in every club. Article content 8. It was a nice touch to have Stan Bowman pose with all five of his 2025 draft picks at Development Camp this past week, the young men wearing the jerseys with their name plates on the back. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them that Mr. Bowman seems to instinctively understand. The little things like that often speak loudly about the quality of an organization. Article content 7. Bowman has already stated that rounding out the coaching is high on his list of things to go. 'Starting today,' the GM said last week, 'the top priority is to round out our coaching staff.' I am one who thinks that while Edmonton will miss Glen Gulutzan, fresh blood and a new voice for a PP group that has barely changed its personnel in four years could be a real opportunity. Article content Article content 6. My Oilers wild card for this upcoming season is defenceman Alec Regula. Claimed off waivers from Boston mid-season, Regula sat out the year with an injury. The 6'4, 211 LB London Knights grad is a stout defender. But his right shot also has significant offensive up-side. And he is at a $775k cap hit. Edmonton did not pluck and then protect this player all season long because they did not believe in him. Store that one away, if you will… Article content 5. I will not be surprised if Jake Walman's numbers spike this upcoming season. Evan Bouchard will get the lion's share of the Power Play time…as well he should. But I see Walman as the #1 candidate to be on the second unit. His ability to transport, pass, to walk the line and shoot are all well-above average. Could Walman hit ten goals and fifty points this year? I really think so. The Oilers would be well advised to extend the player's contract now and not later.

Sean Whyte kicks walk-off field goal as B.C. Lions rally to beat Alouettes 21-20

MONTREAL — Sean Whyte's 43-yard field goal on the final play of the game lifted the B.C. Lions to a stunning come-from-behind 21-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes in front of 21,144 Percival Molson Stadium spectators on Saturday night. Article content Trailing 17-12 as time wound down in the fourth quarter, Lions' quarterback Nathan Rourke connected on an 46-yard passing play to Stanley Berryhill the Third for the 18-17 go-ahead score. Article content Article content Article content Rourke failed on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, allowing Montreal to retake a 20-18 lead on a Jose Maltos 24-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Article content The Lions quickly moved the ball downfield on the ensuing kickoff, setting up Whyte for his last-play heroics. Article content The Lions snapped their three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3. Article content Rourke went 22-for-36, throwing for 352 yards and one touchdown. He was making his first start for B.C. since June 12 after missing his team's last two games with an oblique injury. Article content Justin McInnis had 6 receptions totalling 109 yards to pace the Lions, his first 100-plus yardage game of the season. Article content McLeod Bethel-Thomspon, starting his second straight game in place of the injured Davis Alexander, completed 15 of 23 pass attempts, good for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Article content Article content Alouettes running back Sean Thomas Erlington, who played in his 100th career CFL game, collected 76 yards and scored his first receiving touchdown of the season. It marked the Montreal native's fifth career non-rushing touchdown and his first since 2023. Tyson Philpot also scored his team-leading third touchdown of the season for Montreal. Article content Article content The Alouettes (3-2) suffered their fifth straight loss against the Lions dating back to July of 2023. Montreal has yet to win a game against B.C. under current head coach Jason Maas. Article content B.C.'s 43-yard offensive drive to start the game was quickly negated by the Alouettes. Rourke's long down field pass attempt to Keon Hatcher in the Lions' end zone was intercepted by Alouettes' defensive back Kabion Ento. Article content Montreal quickly took advantage of the B.C. turnover. Bethel-Thompson found running back Sean Thomas Erlington for consecutive first-downs, good for 35 total yards. On just the third play of the drive, Bethel-Thompson's short pass to Philpot resulted in a 45-yard touchdown run by the wide receiver that gave the Alouettes an early 7-0 lead. Article content Lions' defensive lineman Christian Covington's sack of Bethel-Thompson at his own 25-yard line late in the first quarter offered an opening for B.C.'s offence, which Rourke quickly took advantage of. The 27-year-old subsequently threw four passes good for at least 12 yards each. He would cap off the 72-yard drive himself with a two-yard run into the end zone just 57 seconds into the second quarter, his second rushing major of the season.
