Sabah showcases cultural pride and unity in Jelajah Sabah 2025
Mohd Syahrul Mansur receives the motorcycle during Jelajah Sabah.
KOTA KINABALU (June 24): Jelajah Sabah 2025 proudly celebrated the spirit of community, culture and tourism — with strong backing from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah — further reinforcing Sabah's identity as one of Malaysia's must-visit travel destinations.
Norseti Setini Binti Stil from Kota Kinabalu and Mohd Syahrul Mansur (Tawau), who officially completed their road registrations, each won the main prize of a motorcycle.
Organised by Discover Sabah Digital Sdn Bhd, Jelajah Sabah 2025 concluded triumphantly this May after a vibrant series of cultural and tourism-centric events held across Sabah. The campaign was led with unwavering support from Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew, whose dedication from the outset helped drive the program's success.
The journey began in Tawau from May 16–18 at Kubota Square, where the launch was officiated by Tawau member of parliament Datuk Lo Su Fui, JP.
In collaboration with the Tawau Municipal Council, a special cultural excursion to Kampung Balung Kokos was included — providing guests with a rich, authentic village experience and direct engagement with the local community.
This cultural journey was captured using Virtual Reality (VR) — allowing others to explore the village's beauty from anywhere. After delivering his opening address, Lo donned the VR headset, becoming one of the first to explore the digital tour. Local artists including Pink, as well as performers and visitors, echoed the sentiment: it was their first time touring with VR — a groundbreaking addition that was later brought to Kota Kinabalu as well.
There, Tindarama Datuk Joanna Datuk Kitingan, who officiated the closing ceremony, experienced the same VR journey after her speech — symbolizing unity and innovation in cultural preservation.
The celebration continued in Kota Kinabalu from May 23–25, where Joanna remained a central figure throughout the festivities, representing cultural leadership and her continuous support for Sabah's creative tourism growth.
Next, the series culminated in Aramai Fest, held from May 29 May to June 2 at ITCC Shopping Mall, Penampang. This dynamic event featured a celebration of local arts, cuisine, entrepreneurship, and a career fair in collaboration with the Labour Department and Social Security Organisation — offering job seekers a valuable platform to connect with recruiters and explore career opportunities.
The entire Jelajah Sabah series spotlighted the rich cultural diversity of Sabah, with more than 12 traditional tribal performances captivating audiences. Each performance included live storytelling by the well-versed tribal leaders who explained the meaning behind their dances, costumes and cultural traditions — proudly sharing their heritage.
Attendees were even invited to join the dancers on stage, fostering deeper engagement and cultural appreciation.
All performances were broadcast live by Kita Connect Media, enabling real-time sharing of Sabah's vibrant cultural scenes with the world.
With thousands of attendees, impactful programming, and widespread social engagement, Jelajah Sabah 2025 successfully promoted Sabah's cultural treasures, empowered local communities, bridged public and government engagement, and paved the way for future tourism growth.

Indonesian rescuers try to reach Brazilian after fall at volcano
Hikers flock to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, for its stunning panoramic views. (File pic) JAKARTA : Indonesian rescuers tried Tuesday to reach a Brazilian tourist who fell down a ravine at a volcano popular with hikers after spotting her unmoving body, authorities said. The woman identified by relatives and media reports as Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on Saturday at Mount Rinjani on Lombok island, which neighbours Bali. Authorities think Marins fell and believe they sighted her on Monday but rescuers were held back because of bad weather. 'Yesterday morning we detected the victim. We deployed a team to the location, but we were hampered by the very steep terrain and the foggy weather,' Muhammad Hariyadi, head of Lombok's Mataram Search and Rescue Office, told AFP on Tuesday. 'When we detected her using a drone, she was not moving.' Rescuers said they were using thermal drones, mountaineering gear and a helicopter in a bid to reach the Brazilian, who was backpacking around Southeast Asia. 'One group is monitoring the evacuation using a thermal drone. The second team is doing the manual evacuation process with a rope as the main tool,' said Hariyadi. 'This morning around 50 rescuers have been dispatched, and we plan to send a helicopter team to scour the location.' An Instagram account set up by family and friends to call for her urgent rescue has amassed more than one million followers. 'Hang in there, Juliana! Help is on the way!' read a post on the account. The Brazilian embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment. Marins' last posts on Instagram show her backpacking around Thailand and Vietnam before reaching Indonesia. Lombok island is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Rinjani, Indonesia's second-tallest volcano, for its panoramic views. In 2018 hundreds of hikers and guides became stranded by landslides on the mountain after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the island. At least 17 were killed across the island including one on the mountain.

Sabah readies for Visit Malaysia Year 2026
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Liew joined by guests and children in traditional dresses launch the conference and expo. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is taking strategic steps to prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Explore Sabah 2026/2027 by showcasing authentic, inclusive, and impactful tourism experiences, said Datuk Seri Christina Liew. The State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said among them is to focus on expanding economic opportunities for Community-Based Tourism (CBT) operators and introducing innovative approaches to elevate the sector. 'These forward-thinking efforts will not only enhance Sabah and Malaysia's competitiveness but ensure we stay rooted in our cultural values and commitment to sustainability,' said Liew at the launch of the two-day CBT Conference and Expo 2025 at Suria Sabah. She said this is a first scale event of its kind, reflecting the increasing dedication to tourism that uplifts and empowers local communities. 'It is a dynamic movement to preserves culture, protects nature and creates economic opportunities for local people. 'In a world searching for sustainable and inclusive solutions, Sabah is ready to lead by example,' said Liew. Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the conference serves as a platform to further promote knowledge exchange among CBT practitioners, inspire local communities, and introduce global best practices that can be adapted. STB Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit said many local tourism products are still in the early stages and require further support and capacity-building to grow. 'This signals a shift in the travel industry, where mass tourism is gradually giving way to a model that prioritises local community involvement,' he said. He said the aim of CBT is to improve the socio economy of the rural areas as tourism is one of the three pillars under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan, alongside agriculture and industry. It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty, eradicating hunger, improving education and building sustainable community, he said. 'We cannot do it alone, but if we share one mission, one purpose, and if all stakeholders align, we believe we can turn these goals into reality,' he said. He the CBT activities generated around RM6 million in income across 18 districts in 2023, and increased to RM7 million last year. 'Our goal is to push the income above the poverty line index,' he said. The conference features success stories and key experts from Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia who will take part in knowledge-sharing and networking session aimed at strengthening local initiatives and illustrating best practices in CBT. The event is co-organised by STB and United Nations Development Programme. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Liew: Avoid over-commercialisation in Sabah's tourism development
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's approach to tourism development must avoid the pitfalls of over-commercialisation, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. Liew also cautioned against uncontrolled visitor numbers that could harm the environment or cultural assets over time. "As one of the speakers mentioned, we should focus on value rather than volume when it comes to tourism. "We do not want to experience over-tourism or over-marketing. I read a book that warns tourism players and countries not to oversell their tourism packages, as it may not yield the kind of positive effect they are hoping for," she said after launching the Community-Based Tourism (CBT) Expo at a shopping mall here. As such, the ministry is collecting visitor data and ensuring that the community is involved to avoid the negative impacts of mass tourism. To mitigate the adverse effects of mass tourism, Liew said the state would focus on sustainable tourism growth that benefits rural communities economically, including helping them rise out of poverty. She said that CBT is gaining traction in several districts beyond Kota Kinabalu. "Some very popular districts, when international tourists visit, they return home and talk about it. That attracts more visitors. We are now seeing growth in places like Tuaran, Tenom, and Kota Belud as well," she said. She attributed the success to strong collaboration with local communities, particularly in converting homes or products into tourist-friendly offerings. "When we cooperate with local people, assisting them in converting their houses or products into tourism attractions, it also brings in elements such as cleanliness, safety, and food hygiene. "They understand that to participate in CBT, they must meet these expectations, and I find them responding positively." In 2023, the 18 active CBT districts in Sabah generated RM6 million. This figure rose to an estimated RM7 million in 2024. "Our goal moving forward is to increase income through tourism to levels above the poverty line index. "We are also working closely with the Department of Statistics to assess how CBT contributes to gross domestic product and whether it effectively lifts communities out of poverty." Also present were the state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, and Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer, Julinus Jeffrey Jimit.
