Top US general defends ties with Pakistan despite its terror record, also backs 'relationship' with India

US Central Command chief Gen. Michael Kurilla called Pakistan a 'phenomenal partner' in counter-terrorism and praised the role of the Pakistani military and Army Chief Asim Munir in the fight against ISIS-Khorasan (IS-KP), according to a report read more
A top US general has said that the United States must maintain ties with both India and Pakistan due to the Pakistani military's role in combating the threat from Islamic State-Khorasan Province, comments that may not sit well with New Delhi.
The Islamic State -Khorasan Province is a regional branch of the Salafi jihadist group Islamic State active in Central and South Asia, primarily Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
According to a Hindustan Times report, US Central Command chief Gen. Michael Kurilla, who is set to retire this summer, called Pakistan a 'phenomenal partner' in counter-terrorism and praised the role of the Pakistani military and Army Chief Asim Munir in the fight against ISIS-Khorasan, also known as IS-KP.

'That's why we need…to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India. I do not believe it is a binary switch that we can't have one with Pakistan if we have a relationship with India,' HT quoted Kurilla as saying while answering questions from members of the panel.
'We should look at the merits of the relationship for the positives that it has,' he added.
There was no immediate response to Kurilla's comments from Indian officials, added the report.
His comments come as India has stepped up efforts to highlight Pakistan's backing of cross-border terrorism, following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives.
Following the attack, India carried out precision strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir early on May 7.
After the Indian action, Pakistan attempted to attack Indian military bases on May 8, 9 and 10. The Indian forces launched a fierce counter-attack on several Pakistani military installations.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, have stressed that victims of terrorism and the perpetrators of attacks like the one in Pahalgam should not be equated.
New Delhi has also expressed frustration over several countries hyphenating India and Pakistan together in the wake of last month's military clashes.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM), headquartered in Florida, oversees military operations across 21 countries in West, Central, and South Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia.
In contrast, military relations with India fall under the Hawaii-based US Indo-Pacific Command.

Gen. Kurilla said that ISIS-K, based in Afghanistan, is among the most active terrorist groups planning attacks globally, including threats to the US homeland. He said the Afghan Taliban have targeted ISIS-K, pushing many of its fighters into the tribal regions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
Kurilla said that Islamabad is targeting ISIS-Khorasan using limited intelligence support from the US.
He added that Pakistan has faced roughly 1,000 terrorist attacks since the beginning of 2024, resulting in the deaths of around 700 security personnel and 2,500 civilians.
'Through a phenomenal partnership with Pakistan, they have gone after ISIS-Khorasan, killing dozens of them. Through a relationship we have with them, [and] providing intelligence, they have captured at least five ISIS-Khorasan high-value individuals,' HT quoted him as saying.
Kurilla said Pakistan extradited Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as Jafar, a key figure behind the August 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul airport that killed 13 US service members and 160 civilians during the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

'The first person…the (Pakistani) chief of army staff Munir (called) was me and said, 'I've caught him, I'm willing to extradite him back to the US, please tell the secretary of defense and the president,'' he said.
Kurilla also told the committee that Pakistan's importance as a counter-terrorism partner in Central and South Asia 'will only grow as the Taliban continues to grapple with internal security challenges.'

Chandni Chowk traders protest encroachment, neglect; plan daily hour-long marches till Aug 14

The Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal on Monday launched a protest march from Sunheri Masjid to the Red Fort, flagging rampant encroachment by squatters and unauthorised hawkers in the area, and alleging neglect by civic authorities. The protest by traders flagged rampant encroachment by squatters and unauthorised hawkers in the area, and the neglect by civic authorities. (Hindustan Times) Members of the traders' group said the government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had failed to enforce a series of Supreme Court and Delhi High Court orders, allowing the situation to deteriorate. The group has announced that it will continue to hold one-hour protest marches every day until August 14 unless corrective action is taken. 'A number of court orders have been passed since 2001 — on clearing footpath encroachments, maintaining the area, restricting non-motorised and motorised traffic at specific hours — but none of them has been implemented,' said Sanjay Bhargava, president of the Sarv Vyapar Mandal. He said the courts had made the police and the MCD responsible for upkeep, including maintaining sanitation, preventing illegal construction, stopping unauthorised hawkers from operating, and enforcing traffic restrictions on loading and unloading. 'But all of these directions are being ignored,' he said. A redevelopment and beautification project was carried out on the main Chandni Chowk Avenue between the Red Fort and Fatehpuri Mosque from 2019 to 2021. However, a HT spot check last month found the stretch littered with garbage, crowded with rickshaws, vendors, and parked vehicles, and occupied by motorised traffic despite restrictions. A visit on Monday showed no improvement. 'We are marching with Indian flags and black flags — the black flags symbolise the corruption we want to be free of by August 14,' said Ajay Kumar Mittal, secretary of the Sarv Vyapar Mandal. 'On Tuesday, we will march to the Town Hall from my shop. The next day, we will head to Fatehpuri Chowk for a sit-in. Each protest will last only an hour. We're doing this for the customers, and do not want to disturb the area's peace,' Bhargava said. Bharatiya Janata Party Delhi spokesperson and general secretary of the Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch Praveen Shankar Kapoorsaid that he has demanded action from Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and mayor Raja Iqbal Singh on the issue 'From August 9 to 15, during Independence Day week, we will not hold any protests, sit-ins or symbolic Gandhigiri demonstrations. No one can deny that the situation is bad, but we do not protest on national holidays,' he said. He said Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal will lead a Tiranga Yatra from the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Chowk on August 11. The MCD did not respond for comments.

Requests for feedback submission will soon go out to all central ministries, autonomous bodies as well as state governments, officials at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in October 2023, the first IndiaAI report had laid out the full fulcrum of India's AI aspirations, with detailed inputs from seven working groups. These had recommended the setting up of 3 AI centres of excellence, development of large, multimodal AI foundation models trained on Indian languages and datasets, and driving cross-sector development in areas like health, agriculture, education and governance through AI."The previous report had laid out the foundational strategy and roadmap for India's national approach to artificial intelligence. The next one is planned to build on it to further fine tune targets to meet the goals under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative," an official the approval of the IndiaAI Mission, the government had allocated Rs 10,300 crore over five years beginning March 2024 to strengthen AI capabilities. Under Donald Trump, US' new AI policy has called for exporting the full US AI technology stack to 'allied nations' willing to join America's AI alliance, but also stresses on denying foreign adversaries access to US compute power citing geostrategic competition and national security. Delhi assembly hails ‘Operation Sindoor' amid heated discussions

Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Monday lashed out at opposition parties, accusing them of sympathising with anti-national forces while lacking true love for the country. The discussion on Monday saw frequent disruptions, with BJP and AAP MLAs shouting over each other. (HT Photo) Concluding a discussion on a motion of thanks in the Delhi Assembly, Gupta praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for launching Operation Sindoor, a military offensive in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.'The opposition does not love India; they love those anti-national forces in whom they see their own reflection,' she said. The motion, tabled on the opening day of the monsoon session, also covered Operation Mahadev and was moved by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief whip Abhay Verma, who lauded the armed forces for striking terrorist hideouts deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and PoK. Several terrorists were eliminated in precision strikes carried out by Indian armed forces. 'Operation Sindoor was the response to the tears of our sisters and the cries of mothers clinging to their sons' biers,' said Gupta. 'PM Modi protected the dignity and self-respect of all Indian women. But the opposition, driven by selfish motives, continues to drift away from national interest. They are unhappy with India's progress and want to keep the country backward.' The discussion saw frequent disruptions, with BJP and AAP MLAs shouting over each other. Minister Kapil Mishra accused AAP leaders of attempting to block the discussion on the armed forces' bravery. 'Such discussions hurt them,' he said. Minister Ashish Sood called the government's strong response to cross-border terrorism the 'new normal'. 'Raising questions about our forces avenging the point-blank shooting of tourists should be treated as sedition,' he said. AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha said terrorists were trying to divide the country along religious lines and alleged that some domestic elements were doing the same. His remarks drew strong objections from BJP members, and the Speaker ordered that they be expunged from the House records. The exchange escalated and Jha was marshalled out of the House. 'I was expelled for asking a question. Today, you may have thrown me out, but how will you silence the 140 crore people of this country and their questions?' Jha told reporters outside the Assembly. BJP MLA Shikha Roy demanded that Operation Sindoor be included in the Delhi government school curriculum. Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely said every Indian should be proud of the operation. 'Everyone should stand with the country on Operation Sindoor,' he said. Leader of Opposition Atishi also praised the armed forces but accused the Modi government of backing down under international pressure. 'Our armed forces had the upper hand. One base after another was being destroyed. We were close to eliminating state-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan,' she said. 'But then US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. PM Modi backed off because Trump threatened to shut down trade.' Atishi said the Prime Minister failed to stand with the armed forces at a critical moment. 'Was the value of our sisters' sindoor less than the value of trade with America?' she said. 'While the country stood with our forces, PM Modi did not.'
