Keane has gone in guns ablazing on all but one of Man Utd's new leadership group

Irish Daily Mirror18 hours ago
Roy Keane has made his views crystal clear regarding Ruben Amorim's new Manchester United leadership structure in the dressing room.
Following a disappointing 15th-place Premier League campaign, the Red Devils head coach, who assumed control in November last year, has worked tirelessly this summer to enhance the squad he took over from Erik ten Hag. United have already secured the services of players like Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford to tackle their goalscoring woes from last season, whilst they continue to chase RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko.
The Portuguese coach has also appointed several team leaders at United in a bid to foster greater cohesion within the squad. This leadership collective includes club skipper Bruno Fernandes and seasoned players Harry Maguire and Tom Heaton, alongside Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui.
Discussing the arrangement, Amorim said: "We have a leadership group now. It's not just Bruno. It's not just Harry. It's six guys. They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with and I said to them this season, you deal with that.
"Small issues are with you guys. You're responsible. All these small changes, but I think it's helping the group. We have Bruno, we have Harry, Licha [Martinez], Diogo, Tom and Nous."
He added (via the Mirror): "I feel we're more organised now. We're so much better. What we eat, the way we behave on tour, on the pitch, the rules. I know they're not kids and I don't treat the players like kids. But I think these small rules can help a group to be strong. We have rules, and the rules are not to treat the players as babies."
Yet, club icon Keane might not be on board with the fresh approach, given his past critiques of certain squad members. The 53-year-old has consistently been vocal about Fernandes' role as captain, doubting his leadership qualities and even suggesting he should be stripped of the captaincy. In an October 2023 Sky Sports discussion, Keane said: "Today having watched him again I would take the captaincy off him 100 per cent. I know it's a big decision, obviously they changed the captaincy with Maguire, but Fernandes is not captain material."
Regarding Dalot and Mazraoui, Keane also cast doubt on their defensive awareness after United's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in September, telling Sky Sports: "When they lose it [the ball], they are all over the place. Listen, a player can make a mistake, but they are all all over the place.
"Look at your right-back, where is your right-back? Where is your left-back? You are not in control. Liverpool are good enough to punish [them]. Good players will punish you."
The former captain has has taken issue with Martinez's occasional lack of poise on the ball, despite his experience. He previously said about the centre-back: "Fans love him to bits, but [he needs] just a little bit of composure. Bruno Fernandes has seen his fair share of criticism from Roy Keane (Image: ISI Photos via Getty Images)
"This is an experienced player. Where's that bit of composure that you need? They paid a lot of money for him to sort his feet out. That's his job – to sort his feet out quickly and expect it to come to him."
On Maguire, meanwhile, Keane has been so critical in the past that he even offered an apology. On The Overlap last June, he admitted: "I was harsh on Harry Maguire for footballing reasons. I've crossed the line with Maguire. I bumped into Harry a few months ago and I apologised to him."
Heaton seems to be the only one spared from Keane's critique in the leadership team, possibly due to his very limited playtime at Old Trafford, having only appeared thrice since joining in 2021.
Keane's relationship with his former club isn't entirely critical; he acknowledges the players' strengths when warranted.
After United's 2023 Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest, Keane recognised Martinez as a "character" and even though it was somewhat backhanded, he complimented Maguire following England's goalless match against the USA in 2022. Keane, speaking to ITV, he said: "He's done well tonight. Harry Maguire has been criticised by Roy Keane in the past (Image: Getty Images)
"The reason he gets stick is because he's not playing well. That's football. For some reason everyone has sympathy for Harry Maguire. But he did do well tonight, done the basics right and defended, simple as that, that's his job."
United are in need of a significant overhaul at Old Trafford to reverse their fortunes after recording their lowest-ever Premier League finish last season under Amorim. However, pre-season has shown signs of promise for United as they gear up for the new campaign.
The Red Devils played out a goalless draw with Leeds United last month, followed by victories over West Ham (2-1) and Bournemouth (4-1) in the Premier League Summer Series. Their most recent outing was a 2-2 draw with Everton on Sunday, ahead of their next match against Fiorentina at Old Trafford this Saturday. They then kick off their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on Sunday, August 17 at the Theatre of Dreams.

Why Man Utd should SCRAP Benjamin Sesko transfer for different position Ruben Amorim desperately needs

Skipper Bruno Fernandes has issued a heartfelt transfer plea to the Red Devils brass NO SESK APPEAL Why Man Utd should SCRAP Benjamin Sesko transfer for different position Ruben Amorim desperately needs MANCHESTER UNITED chiefs are 'working around the clock' to give Ruben Amorim the tools he needs to fix the club. But as Amorim and Co landed back home on Monday after their promising US tour ended with a reality check in the Big Peach, one pressing thought dominated. But the question remains, is it a proper holding midfielder that they REALLY need? The £42.3m Uruguayan midfielder, 24, got criminally caught in possession for Iliman Ndiaye's goal in Sunday night's 2-2 friendly draw, was treading through treacle at times and looked all at sea for most of his 72 minutes on the pitch. And when replaced by Casemiro, who remains slower than a pedalo in choppy waters — while Kobbie Mainoo has gone backwards — it exposed glaring vulnerabilities in the centre of midfield. Mbeumo, building up fitness after a £65m move from Brentford, has pace, penetration and perception. Cunha looks a scorer of great goals, if perhaps not a great goalscorer, while skipper Bruno is at his best when looking to hurt opponents with the ball. Advertisement Replacing Hojlund with another similar style player, rather than a proven Prem striker like Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, seems a waste of resources given their midfield shortcomings. Yet Fernandes was critical of the 'lazy' performance against the Toffees, adding: 'We need to change that. 'The situation is improving, but the culture here was winning — and we need to bring that back. 'A lot of people have suffered from this, a lot of people who had been working at the club for many years had to go. In what will be music to Fernandes' ears, United chief Berrada revealed: 'The recruitment team is working round the clock to strengthen our squad.' Rio Ngumoha shines to fuel Liverpool's optimism for new season

A vacancy has arisen on the left of Liverpool's forward line and an early, eye-catching application to fill the role has arrived from a 16-year-old. Rio Ngumoha further enhanced his first team claims with a sparkling display against Athletic Bilbao that underlined the formidable strength, and options, available to Arne Slot. Ngumoha opened the scoring superbly and teed up a second goal for Darwin Núñez inside five minutes at Anfield in the first of two pre-season friendlies against the Basque club. A packed Anfield crowd had to wait for the second fixture to catch a first glimpse of new signings Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Hugo Ekitiké and Jeremie Frimpong. Ngumoha kept them entertained and whetted the appetite prior to their appearances as Liverpool recorded a comfortable 4-1 win in match one. The left winger is not eligible to sign a professional contract until he turns 17 on the 29th of this month but showed why Chelsea were livid when Liverpool tempted him away from their academy last summer. In only the second minute of his second senior appearance at Anfield the teenager, who made his full debut against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup last season, set off from the halfway line and, with Athletic defenders all in retreat, curled an excellent finish into the bottom corner of the Kop goal from 20 yards. Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha (left) and Athletic Bilbao's Andoni Gorosabel during the pre-season friendly match at Anfield, Liverpool. Pic: Peter Byrne/PA Wire. Ngumoha produced something similar in Liverpool's previous pre-season outing against Yokohama F Marinos last week. That goal came on the day Luis Díaz completed his £65.5m transfer to Bayern Munich, creating an opening on the left that could be filled by any one of Cody Gakpo, Wirtz, Ekitiké and perhaps the 16-year-old talent from London. His display was enough to prompt chants of 'Rio' from the Kop and a song in his honour from the singer who appeared during the interval. Ngumoha's emergence – predicted with confidence by John Terry when he lamented the youngster's exit from Chelsea – is timely for Liverpool as they await Newcastle's next move on Alexander Isak. There may not be a rush to replace Díaz given the options already at Slot's disposal. The Premier League champions can afford to wait on their prime target for the No 9 role and leave their £110m offer for Isak on Newcastle's table. Three minutes after his individual goal Ngumoha headed down a Ben Doak cross for Núñez to convert from close range. Anyone looking for clues as to Núñez's next step – with Al Hilal interested in taking him to the Saudi Pro League – will have noted the hand-on-the-heart celebration that followed from the £60m-rated Uruguay international in front of the Kop. A glimpse of Liverpool's past and future, perhaps. Doak and Harvey Elliott, two other players who could leave Anfield in this window, were also on the scoresheet in the first contest against Ernesto Valverde's side. Ngumoha's footwork and pace also impressed in the 67 minutes he was on the pitch. He received a well-earned rousing reception when replaced by Trent Koné-Doherty. The opening game started at 5pm as scheduled despite supporters in the Main Stand having to be evacuated just over an hour before kick off due to a false alarm. Liverpool's first appearance on home soil since the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, was marked by the club's former captain Phil Thompson and Athletic president, Jon Uriarte, laying wreaths in front of the Kop before the game. There was a moving moment 20 minutes in when everyone inside the stadium rose to their feet to applaud Liverpool's number 20. Play stopped and players from both teams also joined in the applause for Jota and Silva. Slot was without Virgil van Dijk for both Bilbao games due to illness. The Liverpool head coach indicated the club captain could be a doubt for Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez were also absent through injury, forcing Slot to deploy 18-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni in central defence for the first Bilbao contest and Luca Stephenson at right-back, while goalkeeper Alisson was unavailable having left Liverpool's recent pre-season tour of Asia due to personal reasons. Summer signings Freddie Woodman and Armin Pecsi filled in for the first choice goalkeeper, playing one half each, while Georgia international Mamardashvili made his Anfield bow in the second game behind a central defence of Ibrahima Konaté and Wataru Endo. That is one department where the champions appear light at present. Ngumoha could add to their riches up front. Liverpool also won the second game 3-2 thanks to goals from Mo Salah, who missed a penalty late on, and a Cody Gakpo brace. Guardian

Howd'yadoit proves a pleasant surprise for Ger Lyons in Naas feature

Howd'yadoit left Ger Lyons "gobsmacked", as Colin Keane timed it to perfection in landing the richly-endowed Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes at Naas. Completing a treble on the day, Keane got up close home on the 13-2 chance – who had shed his maiden tag at the fourth time of asking at Down Royal last month – to hold off Unbreakable Duke by a nose. Unbreakable Duke was subsequently demoted to third, with Summer Is Tomorrow promoted to second, following a stewards' inquiry into interference. British raider Jel Pepper (6-4 favourite) was fourth for Paul and Oliver Cole, while Prix Robert Papin winner Green Sense was withdrawn by Joseph O'Brien due to unsuitable ground. Lyons – who teamed up with Keane to land this race with Sacred Bridge in 2021 – admitted: "I'm gobsmacked, as I didn't think he'd be good enough. "What an honest horse, he's been doing it well. "We wanted to win a maiden en route to winning a nursery, but he (handicapper) hit him with a mark that I thought was ridiculous for what I felt was a poor maiden. "We came here because it was a good pot, and I said any bit of the prize-money is grand. Never in my wildest dreams did I think he'd win." He added: "I'm delighted as Sean's (Jones, owner) horses are now bought for and named by his sons Eddie and James to keep them interested and they are here today. They are the next generation, so it's great. "Sean has been with me from day one and it couldn't happen to a nicer guy." Meanwhile, Bonus Time made all to land the Ironxcell For Energy Race. The 2-5 shot was sent straight to the head of the field by Keane, with Zuheila racing keenly in behind. "It looked a nice spot for her and I'm very happy how she did it. Colin looked after her and gave her a nice ride." Keane did not have to ask the daughter of Too Darn Hot too many questions, as the Paddy Twomey-trained filly ran out a half-length winner from Kodilicious, who kept on well for second, with the still green Zuheila in third. Twomey said: "Her last run was her first run for us and we tried seven in a handicap. She ran really well and Andy (Oliver)'s horse is a good horse that beat her just at the line. "First time in a handicap carrying 10st and I just thought the last 50 yards looked a long way, so we said we'd come back to six today. "It looked a nice spot for her and I'm very happy how she did it. Colin looked after her and gave her a nice ride. "Colin said she could be dropped in and that she was waiting there in front." The three-year-old is owned by Yorkshire-based Bond Thoroughbred Limited, and Twomey added: "We'll try to get some black type with her eventually and she might go to the Ebor meeting in York." Mint Man won on turf at the 11th time of asking in the Taste Of Kildare At Naas Racecourse 16th – 17th August Handicap. The Pat Murphy-trained four-year-old launched his challenge two furlongs out and hit the front heading into the final furlong, keeping on well to win by a length and a half. Murphy said of his 8-1 winner: "He was in good form and is not a massive horse so carrying less weight today helped him. "Leigh said he winged the gates and travelled away nicely for him. He hung a bit to the near side but has done it nicely. "I thought he would have won more by now. "We'll see what comes up for him and he could run in the Curragh on Saturday." Keane completed a double on Noli Timere in the LubriSyn HA+ Premium Equine Joint Protection Fillies Maiden. Michael O'Callaghan's filly justified 11-4 favouritism and he said: "She's a lovely filly and has taken a bit of time but is one we have always liked. "We put cheekpieces on today, more to sharpen her up dropping back from a mile and one. "Colin said a mile is her trip and she'll improve for slower ground. That is as quick as she wants it and we'll probably go hunting for a little bit of black type."
