Majorca 'shark attack' as tourist savaged and popular beach evacuated

Daily Mirror14 hours ago
A popular beach in Majorca has been evacuated following reports of a shark attack.
An Italian woman, aged 85, had blood dripping from her leg as she frantically got out of the water this morning. The horror accident happened at the beach in Playa de Palma at around 11.30am.
Police said some of her skin had been mauled off but it didn't harm her muscle tissue. She was treated at the sea and then rushed to a private clinic in Palma.
Holidaymakers were ordered to get out of the sea as lifeguards issued an alert via a speaker in English. They said: 'Swimming is forbidden in the area for a shark attack, shark attack."
Lifeguards on jet skis were later seen patrolling the sea in search of what could have caused her injury as worried holidaymakers looked on from the shoreline. The part of the beach where the drama occurred is known as Balneario 6.
Sunbathers were allowed back into the water around an hour after the incident with lifeguards finding no sign of a biue shark, stingray or triggerfish or anything else that has been suggested as the cause of the woman's wounds.

‘Travesty' no officers prosecuted for Jean Charles de Menezes' death

Dozens of people joined his relatives for a vigil outside Stockwell Tube station in south London, where the Brazilian was shot and killed by police the day after failed bombing attempts on the London transport network. It came two weeks after the 7/7 terror attacks, which killed 52 people in central London in 2005. Mr de Menezes' family were joined at a memorial outside the station to pay tribute and lay flowers, to mark the 20th anniversary of his death. A minute's silence was held to mark the moment the 27-year-old was killed, a prayer was also read in both Portuguese and English, and traditional South American music was played in his honour. Family members and supporters of the campaign wore black T-shirts which read: '20 years: Justice denied. Justice4Jean.' Relatives say the anniversary marks a renewed call for truth and accountability for those responsible for his death. Mr de Menezes was shot seven times in the head the day after police mistakenly identified him as one of the suspects for the failed bombings. Would-be suicide bombers had targeted the transport network on July 21, but their devices failed to explode. Police found an address in Scotia Road, Tulse Hill, written on a gym membership in one of the unexploded bags used by the bombers. Mr de Menezes, who lived in one of the flats at Scotia Road, was wrongly identified by police as Hussain Osman, one of the terrorists. He was shot dead at Stockwell Tube station on July 22 2005. His family said it is 'a travesty' that no police officer has been held accountable for his death. Patricia da Silva Armani, Mr de Menezes' cousin, said: 'He was a completely innocent man. And yet, he was shot in cold blood. 'To make things worse, lies were spread to justify the unjustifiable. 'For our family, the grief of that loss and the injustice surrounding it are still with us, every single day. 'Nothing can erase the pain of knowing that the life of a hard-working, kind, and honest young man was taken from us out of prejudice and incompetence. 'To this day, no police officer has been held accountable for Jean's death. That is a travesty. 'It is unacceptable that agents of the state can act with impunity. Without accountability, there is no justice. 'Jean's memory demands more than words – it demands truth, accountability, and real change. We will not forget. We will not be silent.' No officers were ever prosecuted for the killing of Mr De Menezes but the Metropolitan Police were fined for breaching health and safety laws. Dame Cressida Dick, who became Metropolitan Police commissioner in 2017, led the operation in which Mr de Menezes died. Yasmin Khan, the campaign's lawyer, said: 'Twenty years ago today, Jean Charles de Menezes stepped on to a train here at Stockwell station and never came home. 'We remember him today, because the system that killed him never faced justice, and not a single police officer was ever held accountable.' Ms Khan added: 'What I've learned from these people we see standing in front of you is to remember Jean Charles is a lesson in refusing to be silent. 'It's an honour, not just to his life, but to the bravery of those who fought for him to remind us that the fight for justice is long. 'Justice may have been denied, but their fight was worth every breath.' Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said: 'The events of July 22 2005 remain a matter of deep regret to the Met and have had a major and lasting impact on counter-terrorism policing in this country. 'Twenty years after the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, the thoughts of all of us at the Metropolitan Police are today with his family and friends.'

FKA Twigs agrees to settle lawsuit alleging abuse from Shia LaBeouf

FKA Twigs and Shia LaBeouf have agreed to settle her lawsuit alleging LaBeouf was physically and emotionally abusive to her during their relationship. A lawyer for FKA Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, filed a request in Los Angeles Superior Court to dismiss her case against the 39-year-old American actor with prejudice, meaning it can't be filed again. A joint statement said: 'Committed to forging a constructive path forward, we have agreed to settle our case out of court. While the details of the settlement will remain private, we wish each other personal happiness, professional success and peace in the future.' First filed in 2020, the case had several trial dates scheduled in the years since, but those were always delayed well in advance. The two met and became a couple in 2018 after 37-year-old English singer and actor Barnett was cast in a supporting role in Honey Boy, an autobiographical film about LaBeouf's upbringing as a child actor. After an early 'charm offensive' from LaBeouf, the relationship became a 'living nightmare', her lawsuit said. She said LaBeouf put her in a constant state of fear and humiliation, once slammed her into a car, tried to strangle her and knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease. She said he also isolated her from family and friends, demanded absolute fealty and was angrily jealous of everyone from waiters she'd been polite with to her ex-fiance Robert Pattinson. She said that her experience was part of a pattern for LaBeouf. 'Shia LaBeouf hurts women,' the suit said. 'He uses them. He abuses them, both physically and mentally. He is dangerous.' LaBeouf said in a statement just after the lawsuit was filed that he had been 'abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I'm ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt'. But he denied the accusations in the lawsuit in a 2021 filing, saying any injuries done or damages incurred by Barnett were not his doing. LaBeouf is best known for his roles in 2007′s Transformers and in 2008′s Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. He also starred in the 2019 film The Peanut Butter Falcon and in last year's Megalopolis. Known for her genre-bending musical styles, FKA Twigs worked as a backup dancer for other artists before releasing her studio debut, LP1, in 2014. She followed it with 2019's Magdalene and Eusexua from earlier this year. As an actor, she appeared in 2024's The Crow.

Felix Baumgartner's official cause of death after famous skydiver's freak accident

Red Bull-sponsored athlete Felix Baumgartner died last Thursday after his motorised paraglider spiralled fatally out of control before crashing into a holiday camp The cause of death has been revealed for Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, who was killed in a catastrophic paraglider crash while descending over an Italian resort. ‌ The 56-year-old Red Bull-sponsored athlete died at around 4pm local time on Thursday after his motorised paraglider spiralled fatally out of control above Porto Sant'Elpidio, a coastal town in Italy's Fermo province. Baumgartner, who was holidaying with his partner Michela Radulescu, had been soaring above the Adriatic Sea when he crashed into a swimming pool at the Le Mimose holiday camp. ‌ An investigation into the incident is now underway. Attorney General Raffaele Iannella confirmed to BILD that autopsies are currently being carried out on Baumgartner's body at the forensic medicine department of nearby Fermo hospital. ‌ READ MORE: Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner killed in horror paragliding crash He said: "What we know for sure so far: Baumgartner died on impact, his spine fractured in the lower part of his back, and his spinal cord was damaged." Local media reports suggest a freak mid-air malfunction may have caused the sudden descent. Investigators are examining the possibility that a camera mounted to Baumgartner's paraglider dislodged and fell into the propeller, destroying it mid-flight. ‌ Authorities are working to recover the camera to piece together a clearer timeline of the crash. Italy's public prosecutor's office has said the investigation could take between 40 and 45 days to complete. READ MORE: Felix Baumgartner's last tragic Instagram post before fatal paragilde crash In the aftermath of the tragedy, Michela Radulescu posted chilling footage of Baumgartner taken just minutes before his final flight. Sharing the clip on X, she wrote: 'For over 12 years I was there for every take off and landing, from skydiving, paragliding, helicopter flights, paramotor to aerobatic shows. And when I couldn't be there for some heli flights, we had the WLC code - 'the Wifey Landing Call'. Never missed one. Except …this one.' Describing him as 'truly special,' she said Baumgartner was 'going home now, up there, where he was the happiest ever.' The 55-year-old also thanked supporters for keeping 'his unique legacy high up.' Baumgartner shot to global fame in 2012 when he jumped from the edge of space in what remains the world 's most extreme skydive.
