A Gelato Renaissance in Hong Kong
By Eric Wilson
In a snack-obsessed city like Hong Kong, there's always room for a dessert craze, the latest being weirdly wonderful flavors of ice cream. Six new gelato specialists have opened over the past year or so within a few blocks of the Central District alone, each vying to one-up the Australian-import Messina, which kicked off the trend with its locally inspired milk tea and egg tart creations when it opened on the steps of Pottinger Street in 2021. To sample more outrageous concoctions, start on nearby Wellington Street with a cone of salted duck egg milk jam gelato topped with puffed black quinoa at Liz & Tori, from the celebrated chef Vicky Cheng, who's otherwise known for his French-inflected Chinese restaurants Wing, VEA and Medora. Then walk up to Gough Street for a tropical fruit float from the Ice Cream & Cookie Co., which originated in Singapore. Farther down that street is Sleep Well Eat More, where the often-changing menu highlights seasonal and exotic ingredients — recent flavors have included Musang King durian, juniper berries with black grape and cinnamon blended with bits of dried persimmon. For a taste of Japan, try Tokachi Milky's soft ice cream made from the famed milk of Hokkaido, then go for an Italian aperitivo next door on Aberdeen Street at L'antico, which for two days this past April featured a limited drop of black truffle gelato spritzed lightly with whiskey. End at the retro-styled Snack Baby on Hollywood Road, which stays open late serving cocktails that complement its biweekly specials, such as a rum daiquiri that was paired with kaya toast gelato in June. Certain signature flavors, like the smoky vanilla, are always on offer.

Artisanal Birdhouses on View in Blue Hill, Maine
By Gisela Williams
For much of her career, the entrepreneur and ceramist Em Gift has supported other people's projects, working behind the scenes at the San Francisco-based boutiques Gravel & Gold and Reliquary, where she is currently CFO. But last year, when a friend told her about an available commercial space on the central thoroughfare in Blue Hill, Maine, 'I thought, 'Why not?' ' Gift says. She arrived in Maine 12 years ago to do a residency at Watershed, a center for ceramic arts, and loved the area so much she stayed; she lives in Brooklin, another town on Maine's Blue Hill Peninsula, about a three-hour drive north of Portland. In June 2024 she opened Working Loose, named after a '70s Quaker-inspired book about the importance of vocation over work. 'I wanted to create a hub that was about art and community,' she says. 'Commerce is definitely secondary.' In the 1,600-square-foot space that was originally a pharmacy, Gift sells everything from Hyperlite Mountain Gear camping equipment to Captain Blankenship bath products, a selection of ironic bumper stickers and Maine-friendly clothing, including wide-legged cotton pants from the Los Angeles brand Meals. Over the past year, Working Loose has hosted concerts, a community karaoke night and a leather-sandal-making workshop. At the back of the boutique is an exhibition space. Last month, in collaboration with the Miami-based gallerist Nina Johnson, who lives nearby during the summer, Gift opened a show featuring birdhouses created by artists including Katie Stout and Minjae Kim. The display has sparked other events: On Saturday, Aug. 2, the expert birder Evan Obercian will lead a late afternoon walk to identify local bird species. 'Birdhouse' is on view through Sept. 1 at Working Loose, Blue Hill, Maine, workingloose.com.

While LILO & STITCH Hit $1 Billion, NE ZHA 2 Is the Real Box Office King of 2025 and Hollywood Should Pay Attention — GeekTyrant

As you may have heard, Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch movie just joined the billion-dollar club, making it the first Motion Picture Association release of 2025 to hit that milestone. It's a major win for Disney, especially after a rough year of costly misfires. But, while Stitch is soaking up the spotlight, the truth is this film wasn't first across the line. That honor belongs to Ne Zha 2 , a Chinese animated sequel that didn't just cross $1 billion, it obliterated records and now sits at more than $2.2 billion, almost entirely from China alone. This didn't happen overnight. The first Ne Zha was a cultural phenomenon in 2019, earning over $726 million worldwide and becoming the second highest-grossing non-English language film ever, behind The Battle at Lake Changjin 's $902 million. Its domestic run was even more impressive: $719 million in China, breaking the record for the biggest animated hit in a single market, a record previously held by Incredibles 2 in North America with $608 million. That set the stage for a sequel with sky-high expectations, and Ne Zha 2 it crushed them. Released on January 29, 2025, during Chinese New Year, the film broke records instantly. It pulled in over 700 million yuan (about $96 million) on opening day, then became the fastest film in Chinese history to pass the 10 billion yuan ($1.38 billion) mark, doing so in just seven days. Today, Ne Zha 2 has earned an astonishing 15.44 billion yuan, or roughly $2.13 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie ever in a single country. For perspective, that's more than double what Star Wars: The Force Awakens made in North America. Globally, it's now the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, topping Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens and sitting behind only Titanic , Avatar: The Way of Water, Endgame , and Avatar . It's also the only non-American, non-English language film in that elite top ten. In the animation space, its dominance is even clearer. With $2.215 billion worldwide, Ne Zha 2 is now the highest-grossing animated film in history, far surpassing Disney's previous record holder, The Lion King (2019), at $1.66 billion. That's a $550 million gap, bigger than the total global gross of many Hollywood animated hits. What makes Ne Zha 2 's success even more striking is its profitability. Reportedly made for around $80 million, the movie pulled off an incredible 27-to-1 return on investment. Compare that to Avengers: Endgame , which made $2.79 billion on a $356 million budget, which is a ratio of less than 8-to-1. Meanwhile, Hollywood continues pumping out $200 million blockbusters like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman that need $700 million just to break even. If Ne Zha 2 had stopped at $500 million, it still would have been a huge financial success. This is the real wake-up call: blockbuster filmmaking doesn't have to mean runaway budgets. Ne Zha 2 proves that audiences care more about story and cultural resonance than inflated VFX costs and endless reshoots. Ne Zha 2 had a budget of $80 million, which is far less than what Disney and Pixar spend on their animated films. Another lesson here is global market dynamics. China used to be Hollywood's safety net, the market that pushed tentpoles past the billion-dollar mark. Now, Chinese audiences are pouring money into homegrown stories that reflect their culture. Hollywood's old strategy of adding token representation and hoping for an easy box office boost is outdated. If studios want to win back international audiences, they need real cross-cultural storytelling and a smarter approach to budgets. For Disney, Lilo & Stitch 's billion-dollar run is a huge relief after a brutal year of failures. Marvel's Captain America: Brave New World ($415 million) and Thunderbolts ($381.9 million) underperformed, Snow White tanked at $205 million against a massive budget, and Pixar's Elio couldn't crack $150 million worldwide. Those losses make Stitch's success a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak financial picture. Disney and the rest of Hollywood can't keep playing the same game. They need tighter budgets, stronger storytelling, and projects that can thrive beyond the U.S. market without relying on brand nostalgia. Lilo & Stitch is still in theaters, while the English-language dub of Ne Zha 2 hits U.S. theaters on August 22. Considering the global momentum, its reign is far from over.

How ‘KPop Demon Hunters' became a global phenomenon

Jeff Yang is the author of 'The Golden Screen: The Movies That Made Asian America.' My initiation into the 'KPop Demon Hunters' phenomenon came while traveling on vacation in Taiwan, courtesy of my 19-year-old niece, Sienna. 'Sorry, but you have to watch this if you want to stay part of my family,' she announced, before clicking the link at the top of her 'recently watched' list. Both I and my 21-year-old son feebly protested that we 'weren't really in the demo' for the movie, but to no avail.

‘Elden Ring: Nightreign' Is Getting Its Missing Duos Patch Imminently

Elden Ring Nightreign Elden Ring: Nightreign has done quite well since launch in terms of reception and playercount, but there has been constant confusion about one thing. Why on earth did FromSoft not make a duos mode for the game? It's based around trios, and they did adapt some aspects to help solo players, but there is no dedicated duos mode. Now, FromSoft has just announced that duos will be coming to Elden Ring: Nightreign with patch 1.02, courtesy of a new trailer they just posted on social media. We also have a date for that patch, which is going to be July 30, 2025, dropping next Wednesday a little less than a week from now. FromSoft has also revealed that 1.02 will contain a number of quality of life updates for the game, which will include a lot more Relic filtering options for ease of use. The duos situation was just very weird. In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki addressed the issue: FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder 'The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that. As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign.' 'Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start. And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.' Elden Ring Nightreign They just…forgot? Well, that was back in late May and now here, two months later, it's being added, so not a bad turnaround time. Making this mode is more than just hitting a button to allow teams of two without backfilling, they have to rebalance the game in order to make it more viable for smaller teams, similar to what they did with the (very challenging) solos. It stands to reason that duos will be harder than trios, even with changes made. Since its release two months ago, Elden Ring: Nightreign is down from 300,000 concurrent launch players on Steam to 50,000, on average. That's fine. Yes, this is a multiplayer game, but it's a FromSoft side project that is not meant to be anything like a live service with constant new content added to keep players engaged. At most, players should expect small additions, but mostly patches like this focused on a few new features and QoL updates. This 1.02 patch should be a good one.
