LSU baseball star Ethan Frey likely leaving LSU after third round draft selection

USA Today8 hours ago
It was a busy night for LSU baseball as the first three rounds of the MLB Draft took place on Sunday night. Kade Anderson was the first Tiger off the board, going No. 3 overall to the Seattle Mariners. Pitchers Chase Shores and Anthony Eyanson were also picked.
The only LSU hitter to come off the board was Ethan Frey. Entering the draft, some thought Frey had a chance to return to LSU for his senior season, but that appears unlikely now, as Frey was picked No. 95 overall by the Houston Astros. If an MLB org drafts a player in the first three rounds, it signals confidence in that player turning pro. Teams don't want to waste a premium draft slot on a player who will return to college.
Frey was one of the SEC's best hitters in 2025 and a key piece of LSU's College World Series run. Frey finished the year with 13 home runs and a 1.061 OPS. He added 15 doubles and a triple.
Frey stands at 6-foot-6. His power has elite upside and runs well for someone his size. The Astros have plenty of tools to work with.
Frey's pick is a blow to LSU's 2026 lineup. Frey's return was always far from a given, but LSU had a chance to return a hitter with SEC player of the year potential.
Here's what MLB.com's scouting report had to say about Frey:
"One of the more imposing hitters in college baseball at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, Frey is built to hit for power. He's strong and has a quick right-handed stroke to go with an affinity to driving the ball in the air, a combination that allows him to hit balls out of any part of the park. While he lacks a long track record, he's a patient hitter who has had success this year against both lefties and righties and all types of pitches."
Frey served as LSU's designated hitter, but he's athletic enough to take up a position in the field. Look for the Astros to give Frey a chance in the outfield or at first base.

What Are The 10 Longest Home Runs In History Of Home Run Derby?

MLB All-Star week brings a lot of buzz and excitement. The Home Run Derby is certainly a reason for that, if not the biggest reason for all of the buzz that takes place during the All-Star festivities. The 2025 MLB Home Run Derby will take place at Truist Field on Monday night. Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who leads MLB in home runs, will be in the event. Other stars like Byron Buxton, James Wood and and Matt Olson will also vie for the home crown. But as those hitters try to win the derby, can they also hit one of the longest home runs in the history of the event? Here's a look at the 10 longest home runs in the history of the Home Run Derby. ** unofficial measurement 10 longest home runs in history of Home Run Derby T-10. Shohei Ohtani: 513 ft (2021) Ohtani's Home Run Derby debut was well-anticipated, and he delivered a show for fans at Coors Field that night. The then-Los Angeles Angels star hit 28 home runs in the first round, with his final homer being a 513-foot blast that went well into the top deck of the right field bleachers at Coors Field. Unfortunately for Ohtani, his opponent was able to hit more homers in the opening round, knocking him out before the semifinals (more on that soon). T-10. Aaron Judge: 513 ft (2017) As Judge burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2017, he made a loud Home Run Derby debut that same year. In the semifinals of the 2017 Home Run Derby, Judge hit a 513-foot shot that might have left Marlins Park if the stadium weren't enclosed. Judge went on to win the derby that year. 9. Pete Alonso: 514 ft (2021) Ohtani was just one of a handful of participants who hit a 500-plus-foot home in the 2021 Home Run Derby. Playing in the hitter-friendly Coors Park, Alonso hit a 514-foot homer that nearly hit the video board behind the left field bleachers in the first round. That was one of Alonso's 35 homers in the round, which was a record at the time, as he went on to win the derby that year, marking his second straight win. 8. Bobby Abreu: 517 ft (2005)** It takes a lot to hit a ball out of Comerica Park. But Abreu did that in 2005, blasting a 517-foot homer that cleared the right field bleachers and the porch behind it. That was one of his 41 home runs that night as he went on to win the derby. T-5. Sammy Sosa: 518 ft (2002)** The Chicago Cubs legend put on a show at the Home Run Derby in Miller Park in 2002, hitting several home runs that landed in the highest deck of the left field bleachers or near the slide in the stadium. T-5. Josh Hamilton: 518 ft (2008)** Hamilton had a night for the ages in the final season of baseball at the old Yankee Stadium in 2008. He hit 28 home runs in the first round, which was a record at the time. One of those home runs was a 518-foot shot that ricocheted off the wall behind the bleachers in right field. While Hamilton hit the most home runs that night, he actually lost in the final of the Home Run Derby. T-5. Trevor Story: 518 ft (2021) The then-Colorado Rockies star looked comfortable at his home ballpark in the 2021 Home Run Derby. One of his home runs was a 518-foot blast that traveled to the last row of the bleachers behind the left center field wall. While Story hit 19 home runs in the opening round, he lost to Joey Gallo by one in their head-to-head matchup. 4. Frank Thomas: 519 ft (1994)** The top deck of the bleachers at the old Three Rivers Stadium was really far from home plate, which was the case for older or now-defunct stadiums. That's why it amazed many when Thomas hit a 519-foot homer that hit the wall at the bottom of the top deck of the bleachers behind the left center field wall in 1994. While Thomas hit the highlight home run that day, Ken Griffey Jr. won the Home Run Derby that year. T-2. Sammy Sosa: 520 ft (2002)** Sosa's second-longest home run of the 2002 Home Run Derby landed along the edge of the bleachers in the top deck behind the left field face at Miller Park, drawing oohs and aahs from fans and his fellow All-Stars. T-2. Juan Soto: 520 ft (2021) Soto hit the longest home run of the four homers hit during the 2021 Home Run Derby on this list. His 520-foot home run landed in the middle of the top deck in the right field bleachers, helping him beat Ohtani in the first round. He lost to Alonso in the semifinals. 1. Sammy Sosa: 524 ft (2002)** Sosa, unofficially, hit the longest home run in the history of the derby as part of his laser show in 2002. Even though Sosa's 2002 performance has three home runs that appear on this list, Jason Giambi beat him in the final that year. Check out all of our Daily Rankers . LSU football commit loses five-star status after latest rankings update

One of LSU football's top commits in the 2026 recruiting class slipped in the rankings. Rivals released a new Rivals300 after completing the merger with On3. After the update, defensive tackle Richard Anderson is no longer a four-star. On3 was high on Anderson, but with On3 handing off recruiting coverage to Rivals, the On3 rankings are no more. Anderson remains a top-100 consensus recruit. On3's praise of Anderson is still reflected in his Rivals rankings, where he sits No. 23 overall and No. 2 at his position, but its not enough for the fifth-star. ESPN is the lowest on Anderson, ranking the Louisiana native No. 93 nationally. Anderson attends Edna Karr High School, a New Orleans powerhouse. He's been committed to the Tigers since June of 2024 and maintained his pledge even with LSU seeing a change at defensive line coach. Bo Davis took a job with the New Orleans Saints and LSU head coach Brian Kelly tabbed former LSU star Kyle Williams to fill the role. Given Anderson's top-30 ranking on Rivals, he still has a decent chance to finish as a five-star recruit with a strong senior season. Anderson was recently joined in LSU's class by five-star defensive tackle Lamar Brown, giving the top defensive tackle haul in the country. Per the Rivals Industry Rankings, LSU football's 2026 signing class ranks No. 7 nationally.
