Bill Gates shares career advice for the AI era: ‘Be curious, read, and use latest tools'
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has said that AI-led automation will be a net positive that could free up people to do more meaningful work. But he has also warned about the shift happening too fast. 'When you improve productivity, it shouldn't mean that if you get less productive, that's bad. And if you get more productive, that's good. It means you can free up these people to have smaller class size or have longer vacations or to help do more. The question is, if it comes so fast that you don't have time to adjust to it?' the billionaire philanthropist said in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria on Sunday, July 27. Gates' remarks come amid growing concerns that rapid adoption of AI tools could displace large segments of the white-collar workforce. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has previously warned that about 50 per cent of white-collar, entry-level jobs will disappear by 2030 due to AI adoption. Blue-collar jobs may not exactly be safe either. 'In parallel, when the robotic arms start to be decent, which they're not today, will start to affect even larger classes of labour,' Gates said. The interview also comes on the heels of a major announcement by US President Donald Trump, whose White House administration unveiled its Silicon Valley-friendly plan to make the US a world leader in AI by primarily rolling back regulation to promote innovation, with the exception of requiring tech companies to eliminate political bias in AI. On the difference between AI and AGI (artificial general intelligence), he said that 'people use very different definitions'. According to Gates, AGI will be achieved when AI tools are able to do 'a telesales job or support job' in a way that is 'cheaper and more accurate than humans are.' He further said that the rate at which AI was improving surprises him, especially with new features such as Deep Research capabilities. 'I have an advantage that I have very smart people I can call up when I get confused about physics. But now I actually use deep research. And then I'll send that answer to my smart friends and say, 'hey, did it get it right?' And most of the time they're like, 'oh yeah, you didn't need me',' Gates said. Gates also revealed that he is working with Microsoft and OpenAI to 'make sure' that AI tools are released in low-income countries 'to help with their health and education and agriculture.' When asked about what advice he had for youngsters trying to navigate the challenging job environment in the AI era, Gates said, 'The ability to use these tools is both fun and empowering. Embracing AI and tracking it will be very important. That doesn't guarantee that we're not going to have a lot of dislocation.' 'But I really haven't changed my 'be curious, read and use the latest tools' recommendation for young people,' he added.

Google Failed to Notify 10 Million Users of Imminent Turkish Quake
Google earthquake alert failure up to 35 seconds warning to 10 million not warned within 98 miles (160km) of the epicenter to find safety, was not sent. Only 469 users were sent the much lower-level 'Take Action' warning during the first 7.8 magnitude earthquake. 'We had approximately 500,000 users that were sent a 'Be Aware' alert,' a Google spokesperson told the BBC. The notification is a 'low priority' warning for light tremors that is designed not to be disruptive to users. The company's previous statement to the BBC said the system had 'performed well.' 'Development of these improvements was informed by our experience with the Turkey earthquake 2025,' the Google spokesperson added. How it works Google's warning system, which is called Android Earthquake Alerts (AEA), can detect shaking using data from the large numbers of mobile phones with its Android operating system. Earthquake warning systems are possible because seismic waves move at a moderate speed through the earth, allowing for a warning before the shaking arrives. Google's most serious warning is called 'Take Action'. It turns on a loud alarm on a user's phone (even if the device is on 'Do Not Disturb'), and covers their screen. AEA also issues a less urgent 'Be Aware' alert that is meant to let users know there's a possibility of light shaking. This alert doesn't silence a phone's 'Do Not Disturb' mode. Google's emergency alert system was particularly important for Turkey's quake due to the catastrophic shaking and the fact the first earthquake struck at 04: 17, when many users are likely to have been asleep. 'Limitations' Google researchers wrote in the journal Turkey seismic activity about what went wrong, listing 'limitations to the detection algorithms' as the cause. The system estimated shaking for the first quake to be between 4.5 and 4.9 on the moment magnitude scale (MMS) when it was actually 7.8. AEA also underestimated the second large earthquake that day but this time did send Take Action alerts to 8,158 phones and Be Aware alerts to just under four million users.

Microsoft introduces expressive new face for Copilot; here's how to enable it
Microsoft has introduced a new experiment called Copilot Appearance that gives its AI assistant a face. The feature is a small visual assistant with real-time facial expressions, such as smiling, nodding and raising eyebrows during voice conversations. It is available in an early preview for users testing Copilot Labs and Microsoft's goal with this is to bring a human-like presence to Copilot. This new experiment is part of Microsoft's wider vision for evolving Copilot from a simple assistant to an AI companion. Microsoft's AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, described this feature as giving Copilot its own 'digital patina' that can age over time along with its user. The primary goal is to make the interaction with AI more human-like than mechanical, which will help users connect with AI more intuitively. Now, for interested users, Copilot Appearance can be enabled from the voice settings of the Copilot interface. It is currently limited to selected users in the U.S., U.K. and Canada. The toggle may not appear in the settings if the user is not part of the test group. This update complements other recent enhancements to the Microsoft Copilot to continue to expand the functionality beyond just a text-based interface. Recently, Microsoft introduced Copilot Vision, which lets users analyse photos and even real-time video feeds on their phone. Copilot can also now do tasks on behalf of the users, like booking tickets, making reservations and sending gifts, made possible by partnering with multiple websites to make the task seamless. The new companion from Microsoft is giving Clippy vibes from MS Office 97. That official assistant was not perfect and was disliked a lot because of its irrelevant suggestions. Later, it was completely removed in Office 2007. This companion from Microsoft is the new assistant, which is powerful and intuitive. It grows smarter and gets more context-aware with time.
