A car was dropped from a plane for an ad—but the parachute failed

By the early '70s, foreign sports cars were starting to break into the North American market, and the sleek little MGB was a sexy option in 1973.
MGB's advertising manager, Bob Burden, wanted a "blockbuster" television commercial – as the company was facing increased competition from Japanese imports. The creative director of MGB's advertising agency was a Canadian named Mayhew, and he had a big idea.
As Mayhew described it, three competitor cars – a Datsun, a Fiat, and a Porsche – would be racing across the desert, leaving plumes of dust in their wake. Then an MGB would be dropped out of an airplane a mile and a half up in the sky, and fall dramatically to the earth with a parachute. A skydiver, who jumped out of the same plane, would land beside the MGB, hop in, and drive away, leaving the competitors in the dust. Burden just stared at Mayhew, blankly.
"But what's the selling point?" he asked.
Mayhew said, "MGB. Still one jump ahead."
With that line, Burden was sold.
Filming would take place over the Mojave Desert in California, not far from the Edwards Airforce Base, where Chuck Yeager had broken the sound barrier in 1947. The cost of this stunt exceeded anything previously spent on an MGB commercial by a factor of ten. Burden's nervous boss wished him luck, with an undercurrent of: "Don't come back if it doesn't work."
On the morning of the shoot, two brand-new, red MGBs were polished and ready. There were dozens of details to contend with. Wind was the biggest factor. But luckily, it was a spectacularly still morning.
The FTC insisted the commercial had to be authentic. It had to be a real car that landed and drove away – no tricks – or the commercial could not be aired. So every single detail of the drop and landing had to be calculated to the last millimetre. A small armada of aircraft got ready. Two small Cesnas and a helicopter to do the filming, and a Caribou mother ship to drop the MGB.
With the early morning light just right, it was go-time. The planes climbed into the sky and at 8,000 feet, the Caribou opened its huge rear doors and the red MGB slid out. The skydiver jumped. It was a beautiful sight. Both seemed to falling in slow motion. The skydiver's chute opened.
Then everyone went silent. The car's chute wasn't opening. The car started falling a lot faster than the skydiver. Everyone just stared as the MGB smashed to the ground.
The skydiver landed beside the brand-new MGB, which was now a completely flattened pancake.
Bob Burden went pale.
As it turned out, the parachute lines had snagged and torn on bolts inside the Caribou, rendering the parachute inoperable. Mayhew, the creative director, just shrugged his shoulders, turned to Burden and said, "Let's try it again with the backup MGB."
Burden responded saying, "But I don't have a backup job."
Mayhew put his arm around him and said, "You can only be fired once, whether you destroy one car or two."
With that inescapable logic, take two was called.
The planes lifted to the sky. The Caribou's hatch opened. Gleaming MGB #2 slipped out. The skydiver jumped. And everyone held their breath. Suddenly, the car's chute opened. Then the skydiver's chute unfolded. Both drifted perfectly to the desert floor as the three competitor cars raced toward them. The skydiver landed, hopped into the MGB, and sped away, to the wild applause of one Bob Burden.
At the national MGB dealer's meeting later that month, the parachute ad received a standing ovation. The commercial generated press from outlets across the country. It won a top advertising award – and when Bob Burden was asked how they had pulled it off, he replied, in the most understated way, "It took a couple of goes, but it worked fine."
Little did everyone know that a "couple of goes" meant a "couple of cars."

A favorable tailwind that drives demand The modern world is constantly being reshaped by the forces of cutting-edge technology -- cloud computing, AI, digital payments, and e-commerce to name just a few. And those technologies are providing serious tailwinds to many of the businesses connected to them. O'Reilly Automotive 's(NASDAQ: ORLY) business doesn't fall into any of these high-tech buckets. However, one understated tailwind will continue to benefit this aftermarket auto parts retailer. A recent report released by S&P Global showed that the average age of vehicles on the road in the U.S. is now 12.8 years. This figure has climbed for eight straight years. While that secular trend may not be as exciting as the others mentioned, it will be a reliable boon for O'Reilly. It sells various products, including motor oil, air filters, brake pads, floor mats, and batteries, among many other things, to both do-it-yourselfers and professional mechanics. Aftermarket is the key thing investors should remember -- these are products that aren't usually made by the original car manufacturers. Consumers shop at O'Reilly to extend the lives of their vehicles. More mileage means more upkeep The greater the mileage is on a car, the more upkeep it will require. Natural wear and tear isn't hard to understand. But most car warranties expire after three to five years, after which whatever goes wrong is strictly the owner's problem. As cars stay on the road for more years and more miles, demand gets stronger for the stuff that O'Reilly sells. The macroeconomic environment is also helping the retailer. With interest rates on auto loans at some of their highest levels in the past decade and other material and labor costs up as well, buying a car is less affordable. This incentivizes people to spend money on repairing the vehicles they already own. These trends have shown up in O'Reilly's financial performance. In 2024, the company reported a same-store sales increase of 2.9%. That was its 32nd straight year of growth, which is unheard of for any retailer. This demonstrates the company's ability to thrive regardless of economic conditions. O'Reilly is a winner, but can the good times continue? There's a lot to like about this company. Steady demand that propels revenue and earnings higher is undoubtedly one reason that O'Reilly should be on your investing radar. Management has also aggressively used its free cash flow to buy back stock. In the past five years, O'Reilly has reduced its outstanding share count by 24%. However, the valuation isn't cheap, and that's my main concern. Its current price-to-earnings ratio of 32.8 is 36% higher than its trailing 10-year average, so I'm waiting for this multiple to come down before I even consider adding O'Reilly to my portfolio. (AP Photo/Cody Jackson) FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles. So far this year, nine children have died after being left unattended in vehicles in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey and North Carolina, according to Kids and Car Safety, which collects data on hot car deaths. Five died in June. And last year, 39 children in the U.S. died after being left in hot cars. Why hot cars are so dangerous for children Human-caused climate change keeps dialing up temperatures and extreme weather, scientists say. But the temperature outside doesn't have to be super hot for a child left in a vehicle to be affected by the heat, said Kathy Wall, director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County. 'Inside, the vehicle can heat up 20 degrees in just 20 minutes,' Wall said. 'So if you imagine it's an 80 degree day, which in South Florida is a cool day, it could be over 100 degrees within 10 minutes inside the car.' Hot car deaths can happen any time of year, and since 1998, every state but Alaska has reported a hot car death, according to the U.S. National Safety Council. In both 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children died after being left in hot cars. About 80 per cent of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University. 'Children sweat a lot less than adults do and their internal temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult. So that's why it's just as important to make sure that your child isn't left in the vehicle, especially during these rising temperatures,' said Capt. Karen Derogatis of Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. It can happen to anyone While it's easy to place blame for leaving a child in a vehicle, even people trained to know the dangers have made that tragic mistake, Wall said. 'It's not a socioeconomic group, it's not a cultural group,' she said. 'This sadly has happened to doctors, it's happened to dentists, it happened to school teachers, it's happened to child care workers. Nobody is exempt from this.' Distraction often leads to forgetting about a child in the backseat, which is why it is important to create routines and reminders, she said. 'It sounds crazy, but sometimes people get out of routines or are distracted, especially in today's world. There's lots going on in the news, lots going with families,' she said. A parent who normally doesn't drop a child off at a day care facility might become distracted and forget that the child is in the vehicle, she said. Create a reminder that a child is in the backseat She encourages parents and caregivers to establish routines. 'We have an acronym, ACT,' Wall said. A stands for avoiding leaving a child unattended in a vehicle. C stands for creating a reminder that works best for you. Authorities suggest leaving a personal item such as a purse or briefcase in the backseat so you'll have to open the back door before locking the vehicle. T is to take action right away. 'If you see a child in a car, don't try to figure out how long they've been in the car. Call 911 immediately,' Wall said. Some newer cars offer warnings for drivers to check the backseat for passengers. Double checking the vehicle is key, said Derogatis, the fire captain. 'If you make it a common habit, just like you would look in their rear view mirror to see if somebody's behind you, or if you look at your side view mirror to see if you want to switch lanes, make it habit to look in your rearview mirror, whether you have a child or an animal or anything, just to ensure that they are as safe as possible,' she said.
