Nalam Kakkum Stalin scheme to boost public health awareness, says Minister Muthusamy
The Minister inaugurated the scheme at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Vellode, in the presence of District Collector S. Kandasamy and MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar. As part of the initiative, 45 health camps have been planned across the district.
Speaking to media persons, the Minister highlighted the ongoing success of the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam initiative, which has delivered mobile medical services to various sections of the population. 'Of the three lakh people invited for cancer screening, over 1.5 lakh have already been tested. Among them, 32 individuals were diagnosed with cancer and are currently receiving treatment,' he said. However, he clarified that this does not indicate a high prevalence of cancer in the district.
Responding to AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's allegation that 2,000 Amma Mini Clinics were closed under the DMK regime, the Minister refuted the claim. He asserted that the current government's doorstep healthcare initiative is fully functional, adequately staffed, and equipped with essential medicines.
Addressing concerns over reports of kidney trafficking, Mr. Muthusamy said the government had identified isolated incidents and initiated firm action. Investigations into the medical institutions allegedly involved are ongoing, and strict measures are being taken wherever malpractice is confirmed.
Commenting on the Madras High Court directive prohibiting the use of Chief Ministers' images in government welfare advertisements, the Minister said, 'The government will strictly follow the court's order. There is no need to advertise using the Chief Minister's image—everyone, from children to adults, knows M.K. Stalin is the Chief Minister.'

Affordable housing needs collaboration between Centre and State, say panellists
The State and Central governments must collaborate and work together for providing affordable housing, and address issues of equity and financial inclusion. This was one of the major insights shared at the discussion on 'Affordable Housing: Bridging the Urban Housing Gap' organised as part of The Hindu Tamil Nadu Real Estate Summit 2025 in the city on Tuesday. The topics deliberated include the need for inclusive housing, challenges faced by private developers, and the role of the government in providing affordable housing. Noting that housing for marginalised communities cannot be ensured with a one-size-fits-all approach, cannot be done in a one-size-fits-all approach, Vanessa Peter, founder, Information and Resource Centre for the Deprived Urban Communities, said basic requirements should be met without compromising on traditional livelihood spaces. Underlining the challenges in ensuring affordable housing for socially disadvantaged people, she said communities must be consulted before designing houses, and a robust third-party quality monitoring mechanism put in place to reduce design flaws. Speakers also stressed the affordability of housing for urban poor population under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) by waiver of beneficiary contribution to some extent. When asked whether incremental housing would be developed in satellite townships, A. Srivathsan, professor, Head of the Centre for Research on Architecture and Urbanism at CEPT University, said Arumbakkam Sites and Services Scheme was one of the best examples for incremental housing. The area has turned beyond recognition over a generation as people have become economically strong. However, such housing is only possible with design and legal modifications, given land cost limitations. Pointing out that housing for economically weaker sections is largely covered by the State, he said that land availability and construction cost were some of the challenges. Private players are more interested in promoting housing for higher income groups. Though developing a grid of roads would be ideal for structured housing development, people are often willing to suffer lack of infrastructure and focus on the land cost. Highlighting that inclusive housing was a critical component of equitable growth, R.V. Shekar, chairman and managing director (MD), Lancor Group, spoke on the need for creating an environment to collaborate with the Central government to develop integrated satellite townships at subsidised cost. A pilot project, with up to two lakh houses, could be planned near Chennai. P. Suresh, MD, Arun Excello Group, spoke on integrated township in Oragadam that aims at improving lifestyle. However, obtaining land parcel for developing such townships was a challenge. The government played a pivotal role in allotting land parcels to develop housing for communities. The Central government should consider restoring the benefits offered under the earlier version of the PMAY, and reduce taxes to resolve issues of affordable housing to low and middle income groups. ing. EPS slams DMK for halting welfare schemes, vows to revive them

The free laptop scheme helped thousands of rural students access future-ready technology. But the DMK scrapped it after coming to power." He also criticised the DMK for shutting down the Amma mini clinics. "Now the chief minister is holding one-day Nalam Kaakum Stalin medical camps. Is he interested in people's health only now? Amma mini clinics provided daily medical care within 2–3 km for every locality. Why politicise welfare schemes?" he asked, promising to revive both schemes if AIADMK returns to power. EPS further hit out at the DMK for failing to deliver on several 2021 poll promises made to Tenkasi. "Why do you need a CM who cannot keep his word? DMK is now openly admitting it depends on allies to win in 2026. We, the AIADMK and BJP, depend only on people — because for us, people are the true rulers," he said. AIADMK promises to carry out study on diverting Tamirabharani surplus water to Manimuthar dam
The AIADMK, if voted to power in 2026, will conduct detailed study on diverting surplus water of Tamirabharani from Papanasam dam to Manimuthar dam, said the former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Mr. Palaniswami assured a group of farmers, which met him on Tuesday at Courtallam during his Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagaththai Meetpom campaign, that if the outcome of this study was positive, the project would be implemented at any cost. Farmers complained to Mr. Palaniswami that the irrigation tanks had not been dredged in the last four years. While the irrigation tanks had thousands of truck loads of silt, permission had not been given to potters to take it free of cost to nourish their ranches even as the realtors were allowed to take it illegally for commercial purposes. 'While several thousands of cusecs of water is going waste, the government is not in a mood to construct checkdams to improve water table,' the farmers complained. Mr. Palaniswami said the AIADMK hired the services of retired Superintending Engineers and the Chief Engineers of Water Resources and the Public Works Department to select sites for constructing checkdams. 'After taking up kudimaramaththu for deepening and strengthening the irrigation tanks in a big way, we had selected four sites for constructing checkdams across the Cauvery and as many spots across the Tamirabharani. But, the DMK government, which came to power in 2021, shelved these projects for reasons best known to Chief Minister Stalin. When we return to power, we will fulfil all your genuine demands,' Mr. Palaniswami assured. Livelihood issues Tamil Nadu Differently-abled Legal Protection Association president R. Shanmugasundaram, in a memorandum to Mr. Palaniswami, said Mr. Stalin, who issued more than 50 Government Orders for the welfare of the people with disabilities, had not taken any step to implement these orders. The orders on roadside shops and allotting 5% of shops under urban and the rural local bodies to the people with disabilities remained on paper. 'Even after complaints were submitted to the Collectors concerned about the differently-abled being not allowed to participate in the auction, action was not taken due to political pressure and coercion. The monthly assistance for the differently-abled should be increased to ₹3,000 and the AIADMK should create a wing for us and get our demands to be included in the AIADMK's poll manifesto,' Mr. Shanmugasundaram said. Association treasurer Gandhimathi said the DMK's promise of reserving 4% of the government jobs for people with disabilities with necessary educational qualification was yet to be implemented. Mr. Palaniswami recalled that retrofitted motorcycles at an estimate of ₹52 crore were given to 10,000 persons with disabilities during the AIADMK rule while 5,000 persons received battery-operated wheelchairs worth ₹45 crore. Moreover, over 2 lakh physically challenged persons were given welfare assistance totalling ₹330 crore during AIADMK regime, he said. 'The differently-abed candidates appearing for the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and Union Public Service Commission were given ₹50,000 each by the AIADMK government. Subsidy for self-employment was increased to ₹25,000. As life has become a struggle for you, we'll be with you in facing and neutralising these challenges as we return to power,' Mr. Palaniswami said. A group of government schoolchildren, who have got admission in the medical colleges thanks to the 7.50% reservation introduced by the previous AIADMK government, met and thanked Mr. Palaniswami, who presented them stethoscope.
