MP Materials Forges $500M Partnership with Apple for US-Made, Recycled Rare Earth Magnets
Under the terms of this $500 million partnership, MP Materials will manufacture the magnets at its Fort Worth, Texas, facility, known as Independence. The recycled rare earth feedstock for these magnets will be processed at MP Materials' Mountain Pass site in California, which is the only active rare earth mining and processing facility in the United States. This feedstock will be sourced from post-industrial waste and end-of-life products, including magnet scrap and components.

The collaboration is the culmination of nearly 5 years of joint development between Apple and MP Materials, during which they have piloted advanced recycling technology to ensure that recycled rare earth magnets meet Apple's stringent performance and design criteria. To fulfill the agreement with Apple and in line with a recent public-private partnership with the US Department of Defense/DoD, MP Materials will expand the capacity of its Fort Worth magnetics facility to include neodymium magnet production lines specifically tailored for Apple products.
MP Materials Corp. (NYSE:MP) produces rare earth materials in the Western Hemisphere and operates in 2 segments: Materials and Magnetics.

Apple Loop: iPhone 17 Upgrades, iPhone Fold Specs Leak, MacBook Pro Release Dates
Taking a look back at this week's news and headlines from across the Apple world, including iPhone 17 design leaks, iPhone Fold specs, iOS 26 updates, iPad Pro's significant change, MacBook Pro release dates, MLS on Apple TV, and more… Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Apple in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes. A series of iPhone 16 on display inside the Apple Store in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Photo by Annice ...) iPhone 17 Family Colours Revealed As the clock ticks down towards the September launch date for the iPhone 17 family, more details and specifications are becoming clear. While 'what color my new phone is' might not seem as important as 'which iPhone will use a Qualcomm modem and which will use the new Apple C1 mode', to the general public, the former is vital: "Why are colors so important? Well, for a start they're a way to show everyone that you have the new model if you pick this year's hero color. And in a less shallow reason, it's a way to express yourself, especially if you're one of those brave (foolhardy) people who don't clad their expensive phone in a case." (Forbes). iPhone Fold's Specs Leak While pre-orders and sales figures for Android are breaking records, Apple's foldable is still more than a year away. Thanks to its long lead time for development, the gross details are already clear, such as the choice of foldable display. Curiously, Apple is going off the shelf: "Apple's first foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.8-inch inner display, and a 5.5-inch outer display, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce. Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo already mentioned those same display sizes for the foldable iPhone in March, meaning there are now multiple sources backing those sizes, so long as TrendForce is not simply copying what Kuo said." (MacRumors). iOS 26 Brings Back An AI Favourite The latest public beta of iOS 26 shows the new Glass-like interface debuted by Apple at WWDC. However, it also brings back a feature that Apple had to drop due to its poor quality. Yes, the Apple Intelligence-powered news summaries are coming back: "These summaries, powered by Apple Intelligence, were suddenly removed in January when some summaries were delivering unclear or misleading information: BBC News, for instance, complained when inaccurate summaries had been generated. They're still in beta, to be clear, but Apple has made improvements to the experience and to the quality. It seems likely that Apple will have worked with news organizations to do this. (Forbes). New iPad Pro's Major Change The specs in the upcoming iPa Pro—likely to be the debut hardware for the Apple Silcion M5 chipset—includes a curious addition… a second forward-facing camera. Ad it's all to do with comfortably unlocking your tablet: " iPad Pro is unique in Apple tablets in that it has Face ID as the way to unlock it — the others use Touch ID with a sensor in the power button. Trouble is, if you want to use the iPad Pro in portrait orientation, that landscape camera doesn't always work quite as well to unlock effectively. '...what's the solution? Pretty simple actually: Apple is apparently adding a second, portrait-side front-facing camera to the upcoming M5 iPad Pro, presumably so FaceTimers and selfie fans can use the device equally well in either orientation." (Forbes). MacBook Pro Release Dates Also chasing the M5 chipset are the Mac laptops. The MacBook Pro will likely arrive first, but this isn't expected until early next year, according to the leaked roadmap for Apple's deskbound hardware: '…the M5 MacBook Pro release is listed as late 2025 and covers three models (presumably the MacBook Pro, MacBook Pro Max, and MacBook Pro Max). That could easily fit a mid-to-late October date that many felt Apple was using as the annual anchor. It could also coincide with a later launch in mid- to late-November, which would potentially result in only a handful of laptops being sold in December, with the bulk of retail devices arriving in January 2026." (Forbes). UK Government Steps Back From Apple Demands The UK government's naive attempts to force Apple to add a 'back door' and break its encryption of personal data could be coming to a close. While there is unlikely to be a big announcement, the signs are that the demand will be rescinded: "...two senior British officials have told the Financial Times… the Home Office, which ordered the tech giant in January to grant access to its most secure cloud storage system, would probably have to retreat in the face of pressure from senior leaders in Washington, including Vice President JD Vance." (FT, Syndicated Via Ars Technica). And Finally How popular are sports packages on Apple TV? Thanks to Major League Soccer in the US, we have one more data point: "Apple TV's MLS Season Pass service is 'averaging 120,000 unique viewers' per match in 2025... the viewership was a 50 per cent increase on last year. However, it is not clear whether the figure is an average minute audience and, if it is, whether that's for each individual game or each match window on MLS Season Pass." (SportsPro). New dating advice app Tea rockets to No. 1 app spot: What to know
A dating advice app called Tea has rocketed to the top of the free apps chart in Apple's App Store after it went viral on Reddit, TikTok and across social media. The app varies from traditional dating apps because it's only for women, and instead of looking for dates, women go on the app to share information about and look for tips on potential male partners. The company behind Tea said in an Instagram post that it had reached over 4 million female users and has a waiting list of approximately 900,000 new, prospective users. Get to know the viral new app below. What is the Tea app? The Tea app is marketed as a "women-only" app that offers "dating tools for women" and lets women anonymously share and search for information, advice, and photos of men they say they have dates with or are looking to date. According to the Apple App Store, to use the Tea app, users must be 17+. The purpose of a woman adding a man's "dating data" and "dating history" would, in theory, build community and help other women share "red flags" or warnings about people they say they've dated or any "green flags" or vouch for men. Women can share noteworthy dating experiences, both positive and negative. The Tea app is available for iOS on Apple's App Store and for Android on the Google Play Store. What does Tea let users do? In one promotional Instagram post, Tea compared itself to the user review app Yelp. "An app that's like Yelp, except for it's reviews of men," the text in the video post reads. After creating an account by logging in through an Apple or Facebook account, a Tea user can use the app's tools to check phone number lookups, do background checks, check criminal records, check if someone is listed on sex offender registries and reverse image search photos to see if photos are used elsewhere, according to explanations posted on the Tea app's social media pages. Users can also search for others based on their location. Tea users can also share first names, photos, and reviews of men they've dated and their date experiences. What are the concerns behind Tea? On Reddit, some users have called for the deletion and removal of the Tea app, calling it a platform that "can be used to spread misinformation," a platform that allows for easy doxing, or the sharing of someone's identity and private information publicly, and a "privacy blindspot" that doesn't let men search for themselves or verify what is shared about them. The Tea app claims to verify all potential users and calls safety its "No. 1 priority." "Because this is a women-only app, our approval process is extremely tedious, to protect the women in Tea," the app stated in an Instagram post. "We pride ourselves on being very thorough, which takes extra time (real human team, no shortcuts!)," the message continued in part.

New York Yankees Add 3B Ryan McMahon To Address Pressing Need
Ryan McMahon can look forward to a pennant race after joining the New York Yankees on Friday. (AP ... More Photo/David Zalubowski) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The New York Yankees stepped decisively into the trade deadline swap meet when they acquired two-way third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The move addresses multiple needs for the Yankees, cementing the third base position on both sides of the ball while adding another left-handed bat to a Yankee Stadium that is built for left-handed hitters with its 314-foot porch down the right-field line. The Yankees also were able to keep the major league roster basically intact for the stretch run without raiding the top of their farm system, where Spencer Jones and George Lombard Jr. reside. They are sending pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz to the Rockies. New York, the 2024 American League champion, entered the weekend 4 1/2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. They held a two-game lead over Seattle and a 2 1/2 game lead over Boston for the first wild card. While major league RBI leader Eugenio Suarez is the top third baseman on the market, the Arizona Diamondbacks' expectedly high asking price led the Yankees to McMahon, who was considered the No. 2 third baseman available because of the Rockies' desire to restructure after a disastrous 2025. McMahon has two years remaining on a six-year, $70 million contract extension he signed before the 2022 season that bought out the final two years of arbitration and three years of free agency. The Yankees, who have a $295 million payroll this season, will owe McMahon about $4.2 million of his prorated 2025 salary and $16 million in both 2026 and 2027. McMahon, 30, profiles as the Yankees' answer at third base for the length of his contract, anchoring a position that has been unstable since Miguel Andujar played 132 games there in 2018. The Yankees have tried five third basemen this season, with Oswald Peraza (33) Oswaldo Cabrera (30) and Jazz Chisholm (28) getting most of the work. As a group, they are hitting .214 with a .354 slugging percentage and a .645 OPS, the last two numbers the worst on the team. Chisholm was acquired in a deadline move last season to play third, but his best infield position is considered second, when he has spent most of the season. Chisholm returned to second when DJ LeMahieu was released before the All-Star break, leaving a gaping opening at third. The Yankees took short look at minor leaguer Jorbit Vivas after the break before deciding they had to make a change. McMahon has three home runs in six games after the All-Star and is on pace for his fifth straight 20-homer season, which would be he sixth of a career all spent with the Rockies. McMahon also has been among the premier defenders at third since taking over full-time in Colorado 2021, after Nolan Arenado was traded to St. Louis as the Rockies' looked to get from under another long-term contract. He was plus-12 in defensive runs saved among major league third baseman in 2024, according to FanGraphs, and is plus-four this season. He is plus-64 in his major league career. McMahon has one homer in a six-game sample size at Yankee Stadium. How do the Colorado Rockies benefit? Rockies co-owner Charlie Monfort told the Denver Post in late June that 'I think we need a new set of eyeballs' at the top levels of the organization as they play out what will be a third straight 100-loss season. Part of that includes freeing money, and McMahon was the second-highest player on the roster. Kris Bryant still has three years remaining on his six-year, $182 million free agent deal signed in 2022, but back issues have limited him to 11 games this season and threaten to end his career. The Rockies have never been afraid to spend, but their choices have not always worked out, often for health reasons. Starter German Marquez, in the final year of a two-year, $20 million extension, is on the disabled list again this season after spending much of 2024 out after Tommy John surgery. Starter Antonio Senzatela, in the third of year a five-year, $50 million extension, has a major league-high 13 losses. Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar signed a seven-year, $63.5 million extension this spring after a breakout 2024, but he played only 37 games because of a left hip and contusion and a left oblique strain. The Rockies, always in the market for controllable pitching because it is difficult to lure free agent starters to Coors Field, and newcomer Herring is having a good season at two Class A levels going 7-3 with a 1.71 ERA in 16 starts. Her was the Yankees' No. 8 prospect at the time of the deal, according to The Yankees signed him to a well-over-slot $797,500 bonus after picking him in the sixth round of the 2024 draft. Grosz was ranked as the Yankees' No. 21 prospect.
