Man Utd see second bid for Bryan Mbeumo rejected in fresh transfer saga twist
Manchester United submitted a second improved offer of £55million plus a further £7.5m in add-ons on Monday for Bryan Mbeumo, but have seen the offer for the forward rejected
Manchester United's attempts to sign Bryan Mbeumo have suffered a blow after Brentford rejected their second offer for the forward. United want to add Mbeumo to their squad after landing Matheus Cunha, but negotiations have been far from straightforward.
Cunha joined United for £62.5million from Wolves earlier in June and the club quickly identified Mbeumo as the second player they wanted for their new-look attack. The Cameroon international scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season and has attracted interest from United, Tottenham, Newcastle and Arsenal.
Mbeumo has his heart set on moving to Old Trafford and has told Brentford and his former manager, Thomas Frank, that he won't be joining him at Tottenham. Yet Ruben Amorim is still waiting to land the 25-year-old right winger, with the Bees playing hard ball.
The Athletic says that United's improved bid of £55m and £7.5m of bonuses, which was submitted on Monday, has been rejected by Brentford.
It followed an opening offer of £45m plus £10m. Brentford, naturally, want the bulk of the fee paid up front, while United would prefer to spread out the cost.
While Tottenham made their interest known, they never submitted an official offer for Mbeumo. And the north London club are understood to have moved on after Mbeumo informed Frank personally of his preference to join United.
United will continue negotiations with Brentford over Mbeumo and are still confident of getting a deal done. That confidence is based on the player's wishes and the fact that they don't need to sell their unwanted players to fund the move.

They are understood to be willing to offer Mbeumo between £150,000-£175,000-a-week, with bonuses taking that expected package to £200,000-a-week. He is under contract with the Bees until June 2026, but the club also have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Mbeumo has been with Brentford since 2019, when he joined for £5.8m from French side Troyes. He has contributed 70 goals and 51 assists in 242 appearances for the club altogether and looks set to follow in the footsteps of Ivan Toney is leaving west London.
Brentford have already banked £10m from Spurs in compensation for Frank and are braced for a summer of upheaval. They announced the appointment of Keith Andrews as Frank's replacement on Friday, but look set to lose Mbeumo and captain Christian Norgaard, who is the subject of a £9.3m bid from Arsenal.
United are rebuilding their squad under Amorim and are attempting to sell Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho, among others. Rashford has his heart set on Barcelona, Garnacho has been linked with Chelsea and Napoli and Sancho has reportedly agreed to join Fenerbahce.

We lived in a flat in Watford with three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. Once we saw what Mayfield had to offer, we were particularly sold on the social aspect. There are many clubs and opportunities to socialise with people. My wife is part of the Mayfield Belles, the village's cheerleaders, who perform at our big events. We received a leaflet in the post and decided to visit. At the time we had no idea what a retirement village offered, but we haven't looked back since. We didn't bring any furniture with us, because it was all too big for our new, smaller, space at Mayfield. All of our furniture was bought to fit the available space, so we don't feel cramped. We both had the opportunity to pick what kind of wallpaper and paint we wanted, which was mainly chosen to go well with our new furniture. We're in the process of redecorating. Our kitchen units are grey, so we've repainted the walls in a deep reddish maroon to contrast. We've also added wallpaper in the lounge at the moment, which is patterned grey and silver. The lounge. It feels like the heart of the home to us. It's just right. Yes. We'd actually already downsized to our previous three-bed flat, as the home we lived in before that was becoming too hard to maintain. Enzo Fernandez will be even better next season
The Argentina midfielder, signed from the Portuguese giants for a then British record £106.8million two years ago, took time to find his feet at Stamford Bridge. But he excelled in the second half of the 2024-25 season, finishing the campaign with eight goals, and has continued to shine at the Club World Cup. The 24-year-old scored in the opening win over Los Angeles FC and created two goals in as many minutes as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in their final group game on Tuesday. Their reward is a last-16 clash with Benfica in Charlotte on Saturday. Maresca told reporters at his pre-match press conference: 'I'm very pleased with Enzo, especially because, first of all, he's a nice boy. He's polite, he's a good boy. 'Then he's worked very well in all aspects inside the pitch, outside the pitch. Our struggle at the beginning was (for him) to understand the way we want to play. 'But he is doing fantastic in terms of numbers, goal assists. This is what we want from our attacking players. 'I've said many times that I prefer to have the attacking players score 10-12 goal each, rather than just a striker with 40 goals. 'So his contribution this season has been top and I am sure next season will be even better.' Despite that, Fernandez could face competition for his place after Maresca suggested he sees Brazilian Andrey Santos more as an attacking player than a defensive one. The highly-rated 21-year-old has rejoined the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Esperance. Maresca said: 'His season has been very good but I think you need time to adapt. 'In terms of position, I see Andrey in this moment in more like Enzo's position than Romeo's (Lavia) position. 'The Premier League demands (players) to be physically strong. In this moment, I see Andrey more of an attacking player than defensive in the field.' Maresca added that he hopes 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong will stay with the club despite being linked with Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund. He said: 'My idea or my plan with Josh is quite clear. I think he potentially can be a top defender for this club. I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us.' Maresca would also like England international Trevoh Chalobah to stay, but offered no guarantees. He said: 'All the players that are here with us, I don't want to lose them but when the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen – not only for Trevoh, for (all) the 25 players of the squad.' Maresca expects a tight contest against Benfica. He said: 'It's going to be a balanced game, a tough game. In this kind of game the small details are very important.'
