
Just a small mutation away? New China-linked virus could be next big threat
A group of bat viruses closely related to the deadly Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) — and first identified in bats in China — may be just one small mutation away from infecting humans and potentially triggering the next global pandemic, scientists have warned. In a recent study published in Nature Communications, researchers revealed that a specific subgroup of these viruses, known as HKU5, shows worrying signs of being able to jump species, raising alarms about a possible spillover from animals to people.
The study, led by researchers from Washington State University (WSU), in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina, focused on a lesser-known subset of coronaviruses called merbecoviruses—the same family that includes MERS, which has a human fatality rate of approximately 34%.
While most merbecoviruses appear unlikely to infect humans directly, one particular group, known as HKU5, is showing troubling potential.
'Merbecoviruses — and HKU5 viruses in particular — really hadn't been looked at much, but our study shows how these viruses infect cells,' said Michael Letko, virologist at WSU's College of Veterinary Medicine. 'What we also found is HKU5 viruses may be only a small step away from being able to spill over into humans.' Using virus-like particles engineered to contain only the receptor-binding portion of the virus's spike protein, the researchers demonstrated that HKU5 viruses can already use the ACE2 receptor—the same receptor used by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. However, for now, HKU5 viruses bind more efficiently to bat ACE2 and do not infect human cells effectively—yet.
The viruses were originally discovered in Japanese house bats (Pipistrellus abramus), but recent studies suggest some HKU5 strains may already be jumping to intermediate hosts such as minks, a key step that could lead to human infections.'These viruses are so closely related to MERS, so we have to be concerned if they ever infect humans,' Letko cautioned. 'While there's no evidence they've crossed into people yet, the potential is there — and that makes them worth watching.'The team also deployed artificial intelligence tools, such as AlphaFold 3, to simulate how HKU5's spike protein interacts with the ACE2 receptor at a molecular level. The AI-generated models matched results produced by traditional lab methods, but in a fraction of the time, significantly speeding up the understanding of how the virus might evolve and evade immune defenses.

Study estimates over 9% of world's lands at high risk of animal-to-human infections
New Delhi: Over nine per cent of the world's land area is at "high" or "very high" risk of a zoonotic outbreak -- triggered when an infection spreads from an animal to a human or vice versa, such as the Covid pandemic, according to a study. Findings published in the journal Science Advances also estimate 3 per cent of the global population to be living in extremely risky areas, and about a fifth in medium-risk areas. Researchers, including those from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) Scientific Development Programmes Unit in Italy, analysed location-specific information from the 'Global Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology Network' dataset and the World Health Organization's (WHO) list of diseases prioritised according to their potential for causing an epidemic or a pandemic. Covid, Ebola, coronavirus-related MERS and SARS, and Nipah are among the most prioritised infections in the WHO's list. The team's analysis suggests that conditions driven by climate change -- higher temperatures and rainfall, and water shortage -- elevate the risk of zoonosis, or 'spillover events'. The study "presents a global risk map and an epidemic risk index that combines countries' specific risk with their capacities for preparing and responding to zoonotic threats (excluding SARS-CoV-2)." "Our results indicate that 9.3 per cent of the global land surface is at high (6.3 per cent) or very high (three per cent) risk," the authors wrote. They also estimated about 7 per cent of Asia's and 5 per cent of Africa's land area to be at high and very high risk of outbreak, following Latin America (27 per cent) and Oceania (18.6 per cent). Overall, the authors found that climate-related changes to the environment substantially drove a region's vulnerability to the risk of a spillover event. They wrote, "This underscores the need for continued monitoring and the integration of climate adaptation and mitigation efforts into public health planning." "Translating these risk estimates into an epidemic risk index allows for the identification of high-risk areas and supports policymakers in improving response capacities, allocating resources effectively, and fostering international collaboration to address global health threats ," the team said. A study by the Indian Council of Medical Research found that over 8 per cent of outbreaks reported between 2018 and 2023 under the country's infectious disease surveillance system were zoonotic. Of a total of 6,948 outbreaks analysed, 583 (8.3 per cent) were spread to humans from animals. Outbreaks were also found to consistently peak during June, July, and August. The findings were published in The Lancet Regional Southeast Asia journal in May this year.

Iran launches Nahid-2 telecom satellite into orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket
Tehran, July 25 (UNI) Iran's domestically made Nahid-2 telecommunications satellite was successfully launched into orbit today aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket, marking Tehran's second space-operation this week, reports Iran International. The launch took place from Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome at 9:54 a.m. Tehran time, as part of a broader mission carrying two Russian Ionosfera-M satellites and 18 smaller payloads. Russian media did not publicly name Iran but said one of the CubeSats aboard was being launched 'for the benefit of a foreign customer.' Iranian outlets later confirmed it was Nahid-2. The 110-kilogram (242 lb) Iranian satellite is supposed to circle the Earth on a 500-kilometer (310-mile) orbit and has a service lifetime of two years. The launch comes four days after the IRGC launched its own Qased satellite carrier, an operation which it claimed would strengthen Tehran's space program. Observers say the timing reflects Tehran's intent to project technological resilience and strategic messaging following last month's war with Israel. While Iran maintains that its space program is not intended for weaponisation, analysts have repeatedly voiced concern over Iran's satellite launches due to their dual-use nature, stating that the same technology could be used to launch missiles, and each launch further advances Iran's ballistic missile capabilities. In November, Russia launched a pair of Iranian satellites named Kowsar and Hodhod, the first launched on behalf of the country's private sector. It followed two previous Russian launches of Iranian satellites in 2022 and 2024, highlighting the growing 'strategic partnership' between Moscow and Tehran. Simultaneously, Russian President Vladmir Putin has repeatedly offered mediation by Moscow in an effort to reach a settlement with Iran, while trying to assuage Israel's security concerns. Putin has further stressed that Russia hasn't given Iran any military assistance despite Moscow's open support for Tehran during its conflict with Jerusalem, trying to maintain good ties with Israel while further developing its economic and military ties with Iran.

DRDO successfully completed 138 projects in last three years: Govt
New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed 138 projects, including air to surface missile 'Dhruvastra', anti-drone air-defence system and high-speed expendable aerial target 'Abhyas' during the last three years, the government said on Friday. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth said this in a written response to a query in Lok Sabha. In his response, he also shared a tabulated year-wise data and cost incurred. From January 1 to December in 2023, 48 projects were completed; from January 1 to December in 2024, 60 projects were completed; and from January 1 till date in 2025, 30 projects were completed. In a statement later, the ministry of defence said during the last three years, the 'DRDO was sanctioned projects worth Rs 29,558.66 crore". Seth said some of the major projects completed inlcude — 'Nag Mk-2, Astra Mk-2, Dhruvastra-Air to Surface Missile, Anti-Tank Guided Missile for MBT Arjun MK-II, Solid Fuel Ducted Rocket Ramjet Technology for Air Launched Tactical Missiles, Anti-Drone Air-Defence System", among others. In a separate query, the defence ministry was asked whether the government has approved the new 'deep-tech and cutting-edge policies under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme. 'Yes, sir. An additional grant or corpus of Rs 500 cr has been approved by Hon'ble Raksha Mantri to cater for deep-tech and cutting edge projects as separate verticals under TDF," he said 'The process of the selection and identification of deep-tech projects has been initiated. Currently, nine projects are launched under this initiative by TDF and nine industries are engaged in four projects sanctioned through DIA-CoEs (DRDO Industry-Academia Centres of Excellence) under the Grants in Aid Scheme of DRDO," the minister said.
