Kunal Kapoor defends Jewel Thief after abysmal reviews: ‘It was never supposed to be this profound thing'
Speaking to The Hindustan Times, Kunal said,, 'You would obviously want the film to land 100%. That is the most important thing, of course, because if people enjoy the film, they enjoy your work.'
The actor claimed that the film's aim was to entertain the audience and not be 'profound' cinema. He said, 'Having said that, the reactions that I have gotten from people have shown that it did what it was supposed to do, which was entertain. It was supposed to be fun and have enough surprises to keep you engaged. That, it has done. It was never supposed to be this profound thing that changes your opinion about the world. It was supposed to be a fun ride and it has delivered on that.'
The Indian Express's Shubhra Gupta gave the film one star and called it 'lazy and banal.' The film currently holds a 4.1 out of 10 rating on IMDb and a disappointing 6 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Jewel Thief also marked the return of Saif Ali Khan to the screen after he suffered a knife attack at his home in Mumbai. The film was seen as a comeback of sorts for Saif, who underwent two surgeries following the attack. The film also starred Jaideep Ahlawat, whose dance moves on the song 'Jaadu' went viral.
For Kunal, too, it marked a return to the screen after four years. He was last seen in the Netflix film Ankahi Kahaniya. During the same interaction, Kunal admitted that he agreed to do The Jewel Thief because the film offered him a fresh character — an Indian Secret Service officer — something he had never played before. He said, 'It was multiple things starting with a chance to do something I haven't done before. That's the most important thing for an actor.' He added, 'This kind of character has always been my favourite. It's just unfortunate I have never had the chance to be part of one of these films.'

My brother worked with Aamir Khan, his career got shattered: Acquitted Dhawade's kin
Pune based lawyer Nita Dhawade, whose brother Rakesh was also arrested in Malegaon bomb blast 2008 case and later discharged in 2018, said she was extremely happy about the acquittal of all other accused. Nita said the bomb blast probe hampered the life of her brother, an expert in traditional arms and armoury, who had worked with actor Aamir Khan. 'His arrest shattered his career,' she said. Nita had provided legal help to Rakesh and other accused in this case. Passionate about antique weapons, Rakesh Dhawade gained fame after he was associated as an arms consultant with the Aamir Khan movie Mangal Pandey: The Rising released in 2005. But in November 2008, the Maharashtra ATS had arrested Dhawade for his alleged role in the Malegaon bomb blast that year. He was then booked and investigated for the Parbhani bomb blast of 2003, Jalna and Purna bomb blasts of 2004 and the Nanded blast case of 2006. Different investigation agencies had claimed the involvement of Hindutva activists in these five bomb blast cases and alleged that Dhawade was the 'mastermind' behind it. But, the courts initially acquitted Dhawade in the Jalna and Parbhani blasts cases. He was then discharged in the Purna blast case by the court. After having spent about ten years in jail, Dhawade was released in 2018 after being discharged in the Malegaon bomb blast 2008 case as well. While in prison, he continued his research. With the court's permission, he wrote multiple books, comprising about 25,000 papers, 36,000 short notes and 8,000 drawings on different aspects of historical arms and armaments, in jail. In February 2024, his booklet Shivakalin Shastrastre: Alpa Parichay (Introduction to Arms, Armaments during the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) was published by the Shri Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal, a prestigious organisation founded by Lokmanya Tilak in 1895. While Rakesh was not available for comment on Thursday, his sister Nita said that in January this year, he was acquitted of all charges in the Nanded blast case of 2006. Dhawade has an Arms Act case pending against him in a Pune court. His lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar said they have faith in the law and are sure of getting justice in this case too. This 16-episode series will make you speechless, has no big hero, still trending on OTT, has IMDb rating of 9.0, series is...
There is this one Korean drama that managed to touch hearts deeply without the need for flashy action scenes or glamorous backdrops. With just 16 episodes, it slowly and quietly grew into a global favorite, moving countless viewers to tears. What makes this series special is how real and raw it feels. It doesn't pretend or exaggerate. Instead, it explores ordinary people going through life's very real pain, loneliness, and moments of connection. That's likely why it holds an impressive IMDb rating of 9.0. Which series is this? Here we are talking about 'My Mister' (also known as My Ahjussi), which aired in 2018. It's the story of Park Dong-hoon, a middle-aged man stuck in a life full of quiet suffering, played with incredible restraint by Lee Sun-kyun. Then there's Lee Ji-an, a young woman with a heavy past, trying to survive financial hardship — played by the talented IU (Lee Ji-eun). Their worlds are miles apart in age and circumstance, yet fate brings them together. What unfolds is not romance, but a deeply touching bond built on empathy, understanding, and healing. Why is My Mister so famous that it has received IMDb rating of 9.0? What sets My Mister apart from many others is its approach. There's no dramatic flair or over-the-top conflict. Instead, it's a slow burn — soft, introspective, and powerful. The storytelling is rich in emotion, the performances are beautifully understated, and the dialogue hits quietly but hard. Director Kim Won-seok and writer Park Hae-young created something rare — a drama that understands pain and lets its characters grow through it. What accolades have been received by My Mister? My Mister was widely appreciated not just by fans but by critics too. It won the Best Drama award at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, and both Lee Sun-kyun and IU were praised for their heartfelt performances. The show has since built a strong fan following that continues to grow, thanks to its universal themes and timeless emotional pull. Where can you watch My Mister? If you haven't seen it yet, My Mister is available to stream on Netflix and Prime Video in India. It's also accessible on TVING in South Korea and Viki Rakuten in other regions. It's not just another drama, it's a quiet masterpiece that stays with you long after it ends.
