Marcos wants 'Mt. Kamuning' footbridge replaced, says DOTr chief
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the replacement of the NIA-Southroad-Scout Borromeo footbridge, which was given the moniker "Mt. Kamuning" footbridge due to its height, according to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
In Joseph Morong's exclusive report on '24 Oras' on Wednesday, pedestrians were out of breath every time they used the footbridge due to its height.
A group of friends also created a tradition where they 'hike' the footbridge in full gear every April Fool's Day.
A US-based consul general of the Netherlands also criticized the footbridge, saying that it is proof that pedestrians are neglected.
According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the height of the footbridge is equivalent to four to five floors of a building.
The footbridge is dark at night, while it is slippery during the rainy season.
When Dizon used the footbridge, he noticed that it was shaky.
'May dumadaan pong vehicle sa baba, me ground vibration dun, yung nagko-cause ng uga pero generally safe naman. Hindi naman po tutumba,' Joshua Rodriguez of DOTr said.
(It was shaky because a vehicle passed through. There was vibration, but it is generally safe.)
'It doesn't feel safe,' Dizon countered.
In 2018, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) constructed the P10-million footbridge since there were many reported accidents and robberies in the area.
Marcos observed the footbridge during the launching of the Pamilya Pass at MRT-3 over the weekend.
'Tear it down and build a better one,' Dizon said, pertaining to the President's order.
'Alam nyang deka-dekada nang ganito, eh ayusin naman natin para sa ating mga kababayan para madali (he knows it has been a long-time problem, so let us fix it for our countrymen's convenience),' he added.
"Mt. Kamuning will be replaced with a lower footbridge that has an elevator. It will be placed at the EDSA Bus Carousel Kamuning Station.
'Ang pinakamadaling paglilipatan para isahan na rin dun na sa busway stop natin (that would be the most convenient location since the busway could also use it),' Dizon said.

PH, US sign technical aid deal for Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas Railway
The Philippines has tapped the United States for technical assistance in constructing the proposed Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas (SCMB) Railway project. In a statement on Friday, the US Embassy in Manila said the American government, through the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), inked the Beneficiary Agreement for the initiative with the Philippine Department of Transportation (DOTr) in Arlington, Virginia on June 26, 2025. USTDA's technical assistance for the SCMB Railway would involve transport model development, port-rail integration study, and legal and institutional framework analysis, among other areas. The SCMB Railway is meant to link major ports in Luzon and decongest traffic at the Port of Manila. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said the freight cargo railway also aims to decentralize Manila Port and provide the additional transport capacity needed at the Batangas Port and Subic Bay. "As a freight cargo railway, the SCMB Railway is seen to solve port traffic and congestion in Manila Port, while ensuring the timely movement of products to and from adjacent major transport hubs," Dizon added. Secretary Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs, said the railway project would boost the government's plan of linking major economic hubs under the Luzon Economic Corridor. 'We are grateful for the support in advancing this crucial infrastructure project, which will drive economic growth by improving connectivity between major ports and industrial hubs along the Luzon Economic Corridor. Once operational, the SCMB Railway will attract investments, create new opportunities for businesses, and most importantly, generate quality jobs that will benefit millions of Filipinos,' Go said. Fuel subsidy to be released once crude oil hits $80/barrel —Dizon
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon on Thursday said the government is ready to grant fuel subsidies to over 1.1 million bus, jeepney, tricycle, and ride-hailing application drivers once global crude oil prices surpass the $80 per barrel threshold amid the Israel-Iran conflict. At a Palace press briefing, Dizon said the Marcos administration is 'fully prepared' to implement the Fuel Subsidy Program (FSP) for the public transport sector, in accordance with the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA). The Transport chief said a total of P2.5 billion has been earmarked under the 2025 GAA for the FSP, while an additional P617 million remains available from the 2024 budget. The FSP will benefit an estimated 1,132,407 individuals, including 258,712 Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers, 723,695 tricycle drivers, and 150,000 ride-hailing application drivers. The fuel subsidy will be disbursed through multiple channels to ensure fast and efficient distribution, such as existing Pantawid Pasada or fuel cards, registered e-wallets (GCash and Maya), bank-to-bank transfers, and cash distribution through the Land Bank of the Philippines. Dizon said crude oil prices have reached $78 per barrel in the past few days, which was still below the required threshold under the 2025 GAA. 'The government continues to monitor global prices closely and will act promptly should the US$80 mark be breached,' Dizon said. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. earlier said that there was no need to implement the FSP yet, though he assured the public that 'the government is ready to protect the livelihood of transport workers and ensure they receive timely support in the face of rising fuel costs due to the conflict between Israel and Iran.'
