
LG's new AI speeds up product design, testing
LG Electronics has developed a new manufacturing artificial intelligence system that enables significantly faster and more accurate quality predictions during the product design phase, the company said Thursday.
The new AI system reduces the time required to assess the quality of completed products by up to 99 percent, cuts AI training time by more than 95 percent and lowers memory usage to one-tenth of previous levels, according to LG.
Where it previously took 3 to 8 hours to predict product quality before creating a prototype, the new technology completes the process in under three minutes using AI—eliminating the need for separate simulation stages.
The home appliances giant said it is preparing to launch a web-based platform called Eng.AI (Engineering AI) that will incorporate the new predictive AI technology for product developer use.
'We deliver end-to-end solutions to clients across all stages of manufacturing. AI-based verification technology will not only shorten the product development cycle but also significantly boost development efficiency,' said Jeong Dae-hwa, president of LG Electronics' Manufacturing Engineering Research Institute.
To reinforce the credibility of its new technology, LG said it has submitted a related research paper to the International Conference on Machine Learning, one of the most prestigious global academic conferences in the AI field.
The company plans to first apply the technology internally to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities, starting with component design for home appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and TVs, as well as automotive products.
The new technology is also expected to enhance the competitiveness of LG Electronics' smart factory solutions, a business segment the company actively expanded last year.
The research institute projected that orders for smart factory solutions from clients outside the LG Group will surpass 400 billion won ($297 million) in 2024 — marking a more than 30 percent increase from the previous year.
LG said it aims to expand its smart factory client base beyond home appliances to include semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and chemicals to grow the smart factory solutions business into a trillion-won-level portfolio by 2030.
LG's smart factory solutions support a wide range of manufacturing functions, including production system design, real-time monitoring, operational optimization, and big data and generative AI-based process and equipment management, the company said.

Lee turns to technocrats as Korea pushes for AI leadership
Experts say Bae Kyung-hoon's nomination reflects urgency, realism in Korea's AI policy shift President Lee Jae Myung sent a clear signal Monday that South Korea is going all-in on artificial intelligence, tapping AI expert Bae Kyung-hoon, chief of LG AI Research, as the new science minister to spearhead the country's AI initiative. Monday's nomination came on the heels of another high-profile pick from the private sector. On June 15, Ha Jung-woo, the head of Naver AI Innovation Center, was appointed as the first senior secretary of AI and future planning. The newly established post is tasked with leading the country's investments and policies for AI infrastructure. Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik explained that the president appointed the 49-year-old AI strategist to help propel Korea into the ranks of the world's top three AI powerhouses. 'We expect Bae to strengthen AI competitiveness alongside Ha Jung-woo,' said Kang. Bringing in top experts from Korea's tech giants LG and Naver highlights how serious the Lee administration is about making Korea a global AI leader. Lee has announced plans to invest over 100 trillion won ($72.29 billion) in public-private funds to push the AI industry forward. 'With both Ha and Bae on board, it is clear that the Lee administration's focus is on AI,' said Hwang Yong-sik, a professor at Sejong University College of Business and Economics. 'There is a growing recognition that relying solely on the public sector for AI development has its limitations. The industry needs both the government and the private sector. While the government can lead, AI advancement is not possible without support from the private sector, hence the appointment of experts from companies.' Bae's career spans startups and South Korea's largest corporations, including Samsung, SK and LG. In 2006, he worked as a senior researcher at Samsung Thales, a joint venture between now-defunct Samsung Techwin and French firm Thales. From 2011 to 2016, he was at SK Telecom's future technology R&D center Bae joined LG Group in 2016 as an AI expert, taking on various AI roles at LG Economic Research Institute, LG Uplus and LG Science Park. In 2020, he became the founding president of LG AI Research, the conglomerate's dedicated AI think tank. Under Bae's leadership, LG AI Research developed the hyperscale language model Exaone in 2021, commercialized it in 2023, and released its third version as open source in 2024. Most recently, his team unveiled Korea's first interference AI model, Exaone Deep, in March. In addition to his corporate leadership, Bae has also served in key government advisory roles related to AI governance and privacy. Not many people in Korea have such deep experience and expertise in the still relatively nascent industry as Bae, said Choi Byung-ho, a professor at Korea University's Human-inspired AI Research Lab. 'In Korea, only a handful of people in the field can handle the frontier model from start to finish, and Bae is one of them," said Choi. Choi stressed the urgency of AI development in Korea. 'We are in a race against time, and speed matters more than ever," he said. "Decision-making has to be fast and precise. We can't afford to put a generalist or bureaucrat in that role. Only experts with real field experience are what's needed.' Once the parliament gives the green light, Bae will be in charge of the Ministry of Science and ICT and oversee the country's science and digital infrastructure policies. He and Ha will work closely to develop national strategies and coordinate interagency efforts to execute AI policies. Both strongly advocate developing homegrown AI models using domestic infrastructure, data and expertise. Their appointments are expected to inject fresh momentum into the administration's push for sovereign AI. At a National Assembly hearing earlier this year, Bae warned that not developing a sovereign AI foundation model would be akin to 'forfeiting national strategic assets,' calling for a strategic approach. Going forward, when asked what is most important at the government level to accelerate AI development and build a Korean model, experts consistently point to infrastructure, which includes data centers, energy systems, supercomputers, graphics processing units, software and data resources. 'Infrastructure is the foundation, and Korea doesn't have the infrastructure it needs,' said Choi. 'At a time when frontier models evolve into global models, Korea needs more infrastructure to make a global model. This is a period of explosive growth. AI develops week to week. Both short-term and long-term strategies need to happen in parallel.'

Samsung, LG eye first-mover edge in robotics camera modules
LG takes lead with Figure AI talks, Boston Dynamics partnership Korea's top two electronics parts makers — Samsung Electro-Mechanics and LG Innotek — are accelerating their efforts to gain an early foothold in humanoid robot camera modules, which is seen as a blue ocean market with no clear leader yet. LG Innotek is in talks with US-based humanoid robotics startup Figure AI to supply camera modules for its robots, according to industry sources on Tuesday. The two firms are expected to finalize supply volumes and pricing in the second half, with mass production likely to begin in early 2026. Figure AI, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, aims to produce 100,000 humanoid robots over the next four years. If the negotiations are successful, LG will become the official camera module supplier for the US startup, marking its first major achievement in its new robotics business. LG has been strengthening its presence in the sector, signing a partnership last month with Boston Dynamics to jointly develop a custom vision sensing system for the company's Atlas humanoid robot. The system will be tailored to Atlas' specifications to enhance its visual perception capabilities. The Korean parts maker is reportedly collaborating with more than half of the 14 humanoid robotics firms that appeared during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's keynote speech at CES 2025 in January. These firms include Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, Figure AI, Apptronik and Unitree. According to Eugene Investment & Securities, LG's deals with Figure AI and Boston Dynamics could contribute about 19 billion won ($13.9 million) to operating profit by 2028 and more than 90 billion won by 2029. While it represents a small portion of LG's 2023 operating profit of 706 billion won, the figure is expected to rise significantly as the firm expands its client base in the robotics sector. Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also engaging with multiple humanoid robotics firms as it looks to expand into the field. At a press conference during CES 2024, CEO Chang Duk-hyun identified robotics as a key focus for future growth. 'Samsung has yet to supply camera modules for any dedicated robotics firms, but its technological expertise and mass production capabilities in smartphone and automotive camera modules are well-established,' said an industry source who requested anonymity. 'As the humanoid robot market enters mass production, interest in Samsung's camera modules is likely to rise.' Industry watchers predict the market for robotic camera modules will experience explosive growth. Eugene Investment & Securities projects the market will grow from 40 billion won in 2026 to 4.7 trillion won by 2029. 'With the smartphone camera module market reaching saturation, the robotics sector presents a rare growth opportunity. Early movers will have a significant advantage in what promises to be a fiercely competitive landscape,' the anonymous source said.
