World champions Spain scored twice in the opening seven minutes as they routed Portugal 5-0 on Thursday in a first statement of intent at women's Euro 2025 in Switzerland.
Esther Gonzalez netted after 87 seconds in Bern and completed a brace in the 43rd. Vicky Lopez in the seventh, former Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putallas in the 41st and substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto in stoppage time got the other goals.

Spain got their biggest ever win at the event even though captain Irene Paredes was suspended and World Player of the Year Aitana Bonmati came on only for the last 10 minutes after spending the weekend in hospital for viral meningitis treatment.
Favourites Spain took early command in the group, on goal difference ahead of Italy, who beat Belgium 1-0 earlier in the day in Sion from Arianna Caruso's 44th-minute winner.
Spain and Italy can clinch their place in the last eight if they beat Belgium and Portugal, respectively, in their next games on Monday.
Minutes of silence for Jota and brother
Portugal were playing in the wake of the death of their men's national team and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash early in the early hours of Thursday.

A minute of silence was observed ahead of both group games, and many Portuguese fans also held up pictures of Jota and Rest in Peace messages.
Spain mean business
Poertugal were beaten 4-2 and 7-1 by Spain earlier in the year, and their hopes for a better result effectively ended with Spain's first serious attack inside two minutes.
Gonzalez artistically controlled a long ball and then flicked it into the net past goalkeeper Ines Pereira. Lopez made it 2-0 just five minutes later, and two more goals before half-time ended the game as a contest.
Player of the Match Putellas chipped a classy third after dancing therough the penalty area, and Gonzalez tapped her second off Claudia Pina's effort against the inside left post from an almost impossible right angle.

Portugal looked better after the break and came closest from Ana Capeta in the 76th when she aimed high after a long ball. But Spain wrapped up matters in from Martin-Prieto's thumping header on the last play of the match.
Caldentay delights in strong start
"Going into half-time with a 4-0 lead was wonderful," Spain forward Mariona Caldentey, who had two assists, said.
"There are always things to improve, and we'll analyse everything in detail, but I think it's a great way to start. Goals, confidence – it's a good beginning."
Crucial win for Italy
Belgium beat Italy 1-0 at the last edition in 2022 to reach the quarter-finals but they now face an uphill battle to advance again after losing against the former twice third-place finishers.

Belgian star striker Tessa Wullaert aimed inches left in the 40th minute but Italy led four minutes later when Lucia Di Guglielmo set up Caruso to smash into the top left corner and put Italy ahead.
Italy could have won by a bigger margin after the break but Player of the Match Caruso was pleased with the important win.
Caruso happy
"The first match is always the most difficult. We will have the opportunity to analyse the game, but we take home the three points with a smile. It was crucial to start well," Caruso said.
"I am very proud of this team. We've had a good start and now we must recharge quickly ahead of the next match.'
The Euros continue on Friday with opening Group C action, Denmark v Sweden and record winners Germany v debutants Poland.

Cristiano Ronaldo's reason for not attending Diogo Jota's funeral revealed

Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo opted to stay away from international teammate Diogo Jota's funeral yesterday. The footballing world was rocked earlier this week by the devastating news of Jota and his brother's death. Advertisement The two players were travelling back from holiday in Portugal in a car to catch a ferry in Northern Spain to take them to England. Reports suggest they suffered an accident whilst overtaking on the motorway. A funeral was held yesterday in the brothers' hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, that was well-attended by his club and international teammates, including United pair Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot. One notable absentee was that of Cristiano Ronaldo who chose not to attend the ceremony. Portuguese paper A Bola reports that, 'Cristiano Ronaldo did not attend the funeral ceremonies of Diogo Jota and André Silva so as not to create a media circus that would only create even more trouble for the families of the late players.' Advertisement The Al Nassr forward has been in contact 'with the people closest to the former Liverpool striker and together they agreed that this would be the best option.' Ronaldo's absence has been a hot topic on social media where some people called him out for not attending and believed it was his role as the national team captain to be there. Nonetheless, his argument was 'his status as a global star would be more harmful than beneficial, drawing excessive attention at a time when the utmost modesty is required.' According to the newspaper, the former United forward has 'assured his family that he will always be present, having spoken to Diogo Jota's parents and wife, Rute.' Jota's international coaches Fernando Santos and Roberto Martínez were in attendance, however. Follow us on Bluesky: @

AJ Dybantsa, the potential No. 1 NBA pick in 2026, leads U.S. to gold: Takeaways

Team USA entered the FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland as the gold medal favorite, and the Americans lived up to the hype, capturing the title with a dominant 109-76 victory over previously unbeaten Germany in Sunday's championship game. Both teams were 6-0 heading into the final, but the Americans' depth and firepower proved too much for a German squad led by Texas Tech standout and All-Big 12 freshman Christian Anderson Jr. Advertisement Incoming BYU star freshman AJ Dybantsa capped off an impressive tournament run by achieving his goal — bringing home the gold with Team USA and taking home MVP honors with averages of 14.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Throughout the tournament, Dybantsa showed why he is such a highly touted prospect and presumed by many to be the No. 1 pick in next year's draft. Dybantsa can impact both ends of the floor at a high level and has the potential to be a two-way star at the next level. He didn't shoot well from 3 in this tournament (11.1 percent), but he should benefit by playing in BYU's offense, a system that will give him wide-open opportunities. What Dybantsa can do with the ball in his hands is reminiscent of Paul George. He is a big-shot creator with an excellent feel for the game, who can get downhill to either score or make plays for others. He also has a great motor; you don't typically see kids ranked this high play this hard so consistently. He had a steal in every game but one (France), but his length and activity were always a problem for opposing teams. AJ Dybantsa 🇺🇸 (@AJ_Dybantsa) Was named 'MVP' of the FIBA U19 World Cup. The BYU Cougars (@BYUMBB) freshman averaged:20 Minutes14.3 Points (50% FG | 84% FT)4.1 Rebounds 2.3 Assists1.1 Steals42 free throws made (1st) — Hoops HQ (@hhqsports) July 6, 2025 Dybantsa is one of the favorites to go No. 1 in the 2026 NBA Draft, and for good reason. But the 2026 class isn't as clear-cut as Cooper Flagg's 2025 class. This class has four prospects capable of going first, including Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson (Kansas), Cameron Boozer (Duke) and Mikel Brown Jr. (Louisville). Several prospects boosted their draft stock during the World Cup, including Brown and Anderson. Advertisement Brown, in particular, made a major statement — firmly inserting himself into the conversation as a potential No. 1 overall pick. He led Team USA in scoring (14.9 points) and assists (6.1) on 46/47/82 shooting splits. He also led the team in efficiency and made 3s (20). His combination of skill and feel as a lead guard will have plenty of NBA teams lined up wanting him to run the show. Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr again put together another elite offensive performance vs Cameroon this time. Mikel had: 24 points 2 rebounds 8 assists 9-12 FG5-6 3PT19 minutes Mikel has been firmly making his case as a top 5 prospect in the 2026 draft class — Arman Jovic (@PDTScouting) July 1, 2025 As for Anderson, he will be in the running to be Big 12 Player of the Year and first-team All-Big 12, alongside teammate JT Toppin, as the Red Raiders look to make another deep tournament run. Anderson averaged 17.3 points (10th in the tournament), 4.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists (second in the tournament), including two games in which he scored 27 and 29 points. He was arguably the best guard in the tournament, displaying similarities in his game to NBA veteran Dennis Schröder. Anderson will be on the German National Team for the 2028 Olympics. The 2025-26 season is set to be a landmark year for the Big 12, with the league welcoming its most loaded freshman class ever. Ten of the top 24 prospects — and 16 of the top 100, including Baylor's Koa Peat — are set to bring their talents to the conference. In Team USA's win, Peat became the first player to win three World Cup titles in FIBA youth competitions. Peat was one of the more consistent players throughout the tournament, averaging 12.6 points and 6.9 rebounds. There were 54 college players in this tournament, which speaks to the depth of talent in the sport, especially as more international players come over. Advertisement Eric Reibe (Germany) and Jacob Furphy (Australia) make UConn deeper and more dangerous. Foreign prospects like Dash Daniels (Australia) get most of the headlines, but Furphy may be the best pro of all the international prospects in this tournament. The Washington Huskies are also in great shape moving forward, with JJ Mandaquit (Team USA) and Hannes Steinbach (Germany).
