Vijay Deverakonda says he could have avoided flop movies if he came from a strong film family: ‘Now, I will not go to shoot if…'

Once hailed as India's next biggest star, Telugu actor Vijay Deverakonda's career is now a textbook example of how flying too close to the sun can scorch even the brightest stars. With not a single box office success in the past seven years, Deverakonda's 'image' is now like a shadow of his past self. However, the actor is currently eyeing a massive comeback with Kingdom, a film in which both he and his fans have placed high hopes.
Recently, Deverakonda opened up about the setbacks he's faced over the years, maintaining that had he belonged to a film family with a strong foundation and guiding voices, some of his missteps might have been avoided. He also mentioned that he moved forward with certain projects despite lacking full conviction in their scripts, simply because he felt he didn't have the voice to demand refinement. Without explicitly using the word 'nepotism', he told The Hollywood Reporter India, 'I was never in a position to tell a director… I don't think people outside the industry will get this… but when you do not come from an 'establishment' of a sort and you do not have that support system, you do not have the space to tell the director that you are not ready to go to shoot yet with this script and that it needs more work.'

He continued, 'Whereas another actor, with similar experience but has the support around him, would know from childhood itself that he doesn't have to go to shoot. Or his father will come and tell him, 'No, spend two-three more months. I'll get you two-three more writers.' I never had that space, until recently. Now, if I'm not happy with something, I talk to the producers and directors, and say that 'I will not shoot this because the producer's money, the director's career, and my face and the reputation I have built are all important.''
Earlier in his career, Deverakonda said he often went along with projects despite doubts, simply because a producer insisted or a director believed in the vision. But today, he's adopted a new approach. 'Now, I've decided that if we do it, we should all be solidly happy with it in the first place. So, that's something I've learned to do and found comfort in doing. I've found that place in life, the leverage and a sense of security to be able to have those conversations,' he added.
ICYMI | Dipika Chikhlia says Arun Govil's casting as Dasharath in Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana is 'out of context': 'If you played Ram…'
Since the success of Taxiwaala (2018), Deverakonda hasn't had even a single hit and his subsequent films like Dear Comrade (2019), World Famous Lover (2020), Liger (2022), Kushi (2023) and The Family Star (2024) underperformed at the box office. The only success he tasted during this period was with the Prabhas-starrer Kalki 2898 AD (2024), in which he made a cameo appearance. Kingdom, helmed by Jersey director Gowtam Tinnanuri, will hit the screens on July 31.

Neena Gupta opens up about her FIRST husband; says she NEVER experienced the love shown in movies or books: 'Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua'

Neena Gupta , who is known for being frank about her personal life, recently took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, sharing sweet and bittersweet stories of her early romances. She recently opened up about her first love. Neena's first marriage was to Amlan Kusum Ghose, but it was short-lived. The two parted ways amicably within a year. Later, she made headlines for her relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards , with whom she has a daughter, Masaba Gupta . Years later, she found lasting companionship in Vivek Mehra, a New Delhi-based chartered accountant, whom she married privately in 2008. 'My first love was with an IIT guy' But long before all this, Neena had her heart set on her 'first love', a young man studying at the Indian Institute of Technology. Sharing details of this youthful romance, she told News18 Showsha, 'My first love was with an IIT guy, who I went on to marry eventually. My college fellows used to be very jealous of me at that time. Their parents wouldn't allow them to wear spaghetti straps and I was a modern woman, according to them. Woh salwar kameez-chunni waale the aur woh mujhse jalte the." When a date didn't go as planned Neena didn't just stop at recalling how her friends reacted to her first love. She also narrated a rather awkward incident from that period, proving that young love often comes with its own set of hurdles. 'This one time, my then-boyfriend and I decided to go watch a film. I revealed my plans to one of those girls by mistake and then they went and told my mother that main ek ladke ke saath picture dekhne jaa rahi hoon. My parents didn't let me go. Back then, we didn't have phones and so, I couldn't inform him. He kept waiting for me," she shared. Has Neena ever truly been in love? Though she spoke warmly of her first love, Neena also offered a surprising reflection on whether she's ever experienced the kind of love that novels and films talk about. 'I've never been in love. The love that I see in movies and read in books, I've never experienced that in real life. Nobody has loved me like that. Toh main bhi kaise kar loon? Karna bhi toh padhega na kisi ko. Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua (laughs). But I had madly fallen in love with someone. It didn't translate into a relationship because it wasn't possible," she said. On the work front, Neena still wins over audiences with the roles she picks and her bold choice to try new things. Recently, she was seen in 'Metro In Dino' and the web series 'Panchayat'.
