'I suffered Marcus Rashford humiliation and tore my shirt off in disgust – I was so angry'

Marcus Rashford was taken off just half an hour after being substituted on during his Barcelona debut, which one former Premier League player once reacted furiously to in similar circumstances Marcus Rashford suffered one of the biggest humiliations a top-level footballer can endure on Sunday. The Manchester United forward completed what he hoped to be a dream loan move to Barcelona last week as he looks to get his career back on track. ‌ The deal, which was finalised in time for Rashford to fly to Japan with the rest of the Barca squad, gives the La Liga champions an option to buy the forward for £26million at the end of the season. Rashford's first pre-season outing came against Japanese side Vissel Kobe, where he started the game on the bench. ‌ Flick brought the 27-year-old on for his much-anticipated debut at half-time, with Rashford showing glimpses of promise and working hard to track back in his new Blaugrana colours. However, he was quickly cut down to size as manager Hansi Flick took him off after just 33 minutes, moments after playing a key role in Barcelona's second goal. ‌ Rashford and left-back Jofre Torrents made way for Gerard Martin and Pedro Fernandez, who scored Barca's third goal. While the substitution would have stung Rashford, Flick explained that his decision was not performance related, saying: "Rashford hasn't played that much, and we also wanted to give Gerard Martin 15 minutes because he was playing after his injury." Just seven days ago, Rashford had been part of United's 'bomb squad' – the group training alone and made to use the club's Carrington training ground only once the first-team squad had gone home for the day. One player who knows exactly how Rashford would have felt this weekend is former Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly. He was signed by Spurs in 2006 and was used sporadically by then-head coach Martin Jol during the 2006/07 season. After being in and out of the squad, the Egyptian was brought on against Blackburn Rovers in the first half of the penultimate game of the Premier League season after an injury to Steed Malbranque. But, like Rashford, he found himself substituted 31 minutes after his introduction – only his substitution WAS due to a poor performance. Unlike Rashford, Ghaly responded in the worst possible way, furiously throwing his shirt on the ground while walking off the pitch. The act infuriated the Spurs faithful as jeers and chants of 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' rang around the stadium. ‌ Ghaly was disciplined by the club and left out of the matchday squad on the final day of the season, before making a public apology. He said: "I am just so angry with myself. I have always considered it an honour to wear the Tottenham shirt and I never intended to show any disrespect. "I knew things weren't happening for me out there, my play was terrible and I could hear the crowd jeering me. "I was so upset at the fans' reaction. I have enjoyed playing in front of the club's supporters all season and I felt I had given my best all the time and played some decent football. ‌ "It is always hard to accept being substituted after such a short period of time and I was upset and taken aback by the cheering. I am a player who plays with my heart. "I know my reaction was totally wrong," he added. "I have apologised to the manager and I also want to apologise to the fans. I hope they don't judge me on this incident alone. I have tried hard for the club this season." Despite his best efforts at reconciliation, it marked Ghaly's last game for Spurs as he was sent out on loan to Derby County in January 2008. He returned to north London for the 2008/09 season but didn't play a single game before his permanent departure. ‌ Harry Redknapp considered bringing him on during a January 2009 clash with Wigan, but the Englishman decided against it after hearing the fans boo Ghaly while he was warming up and preparing to come on off the bench. Rashford will want to avoid such a fate at Barcelona, though he will also hope that Flick does not make a habit of subjecting him to external ridicule. The England international has had his fair share of spats with United managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim in recent years. A huge free Japanese food fest from Smorgasburg is happening this weekend

The Williamsburg coastline will look a little different on Saturday, August 2, when local food festival Smorgasburg partners with Suntory, Japan's premium malt beer, to present " Japan Meets Brooklyn – Matsuri," a one-day celebration of Japanese food, drinks and culture. The free event will take over the outdoor food market's 90 Kent Avenue space from 11am to 6pm this Saturday. The matsuri (Japanese for 'festival') will build on Smorgasburg's intense fanbase—it is the country's largest weekly open-air food market, after all—to present six special guest vendors and a handful of activities designed to bring Brooklyn a dash of the Rising Sun. Suntory is going out for the event, with a garden section doling out their signature Kami-Awa 'Creamy Foam' pour and an exclusive curated omakase set, pairing a tasting of three beers with snacks from three vendors. Need some carbs beyond that beer-filled bless? The fair will have plenty of freshly baked buns, with stands from Greenpoint's Taku Sando, matcha and onigirazu (sushi sandwiches) from Tokuyamatcha, and temaki sets and assorted sandos from a partnership between Nami Nori and Postcard Bakery. Habble will provide karaage chicken and Wagyu beef "sushi," and the sweet-toothed can take refuge with kakigori (shaved ice) from Tonchin US, or head to Let's Bounce, purveyors of New York's bounciest cheesecakes and cream puffs. But it is all fun and games, with Candy5NYC making their popular live candy on-site, local artist Hiroshi Masuda drawing portraits, and leading calligraphy workshops. Those looking to take in a show can find the New York Sumo Club, which will demo some of their impressive moves to the sound of OMNY Taiko 's live Taiko drum performances, or Seoul 69 mixing an all-vinyl Japanese City Pop set.

Sprint star, 16, beats Usain Bolt's 100m record at same age and outshines Gout Gout

Sorato Shimizu set a new under-18 100m world record in Japan's Inter-High School Championships while eclipsing the entry standard for the World Athletics Championships in the process Athletics has a new sensation in the form of an unheralded Japanese sprinter who has outpaced the likes of Gout Gout and Usain Bolt, while etching his name into the annals of history. Sorato Shimizu, at just 16 years old, has set a new under-18 100m world record at Japan's Inter-High School Championships. ‌ In doing so, he met the entry standard for the World Athletics Championships. The high school junior, who doesn't celebrate his 17th birthday until February 2026, clocked an impressive time of 10.00 seconds. ‌ His performance was quicker than the Japanese high school record set by Yoshihide Kiryu in 2013, who later competed in the Olympic Games. It also surpassed the 10.04 time posted by Australian up-and-comer Gout Gout, and the 10.03-second sprint set by Bolt at the age of 20 - albeit, the latter dedicated himself more to the 200m discipline. ‌ Competing in Hiroshima on Saturday, Shimizu's time ranks as the fifth fastest in Japanese history, irrespective of age. This remarkable run, deemed legal with a tailwind of +1.7, has potentially paved the way for him to compete in the world championships on home turf, reports the Mirror US. Shimizu, a student at Seiryo High School in Ishikawa Prefecture, could represent Japan in the World Athletics Championships taking place in Tokyo this September. Speaking about his result, he said: "I was determined to run under 10 seconds heading into the final. I'm happy to have set a high school record. I'd like to get a taste of [the World Championships] if I can make it." Gout's personal best in the 100m was not deemed wind legal, meaning Shimizu bettered the previous U18 100m record of 10.06 seconds, which was held jointly by Puripol Boonson of Thailand and American sprinter Christian Miller. Video footage of the race showed just how commanding Shimizu's display was, as he surged ahead within the first 10m and never looked threatened, cruising to victory by an enormous distance. ‌ He added to NHK: "The 10.00-second time was shocking even to me, but I'm happy I was able to achieve it. Winning was my goal, so I focused on running my own race without hesitation. "From the start, I was able to connect to my signature 'second acceleration' and execute the movements I couldn't do in the preliminaries, so that was good." Shimizu currently sits at No. 377 in the world rankings, but should he repeat Saturday's breathtaking display, his position is certain to climb dramatically.
