'I'm a travel expert and making one simple change saved me £90 in flights'

Daily Mirror06-06-2025
Travel enthusiast Laura Bennett, 34, has shared her little-known tip to bag bargain flights, after slashing her air fare on a recent trip to the picturesque Greek islands
Bag the lowest airfares with this genius tip that saved one traveller a whopping £90 on her recent holiday to Greece.
Knowing exactly when to book your flights can sometimes feel like you're shooting in the dark. Many pay for their travel and hotel well in-advance, while others risk waiting until the last minute to see if any sudden sales come available.
Luckily, experts over at Ionian Island Holidays have finally set the record straight after reviewing new travel data that found booking two to three months in advance will get you the best price. This is particularly true for hotspots like Greece, which Laura Bennett, from Bristol, recently visited.
The 34-year-old spent a fortnight exploring the Greek hotspot of Crete and the Cyclades islands - and managed to get a great deal on her flights. "I've made the mistake of booking too late in the past and paid over £300 for a return flight," she said in a statement sent to the Mirror. "But this year, I booked early and saved more than half that amount."
"I started checking prices in January for a May trip, and flights were around £120 return. Just a few weeks later, those same seats had jumped to over £200."
Experts over at Ionian Island Holidays recommend booking your flights 'as early as possible' if you're travelling in key seasons such as between April and June or in September. "These shoulder seasons offer great weather — and fewer crowds — but prices do rise quickly the closer you get to departure," they added.
Flights in July and August will often be the most expensive, so Laura recommends dodging these dates altogether. Even flying mid-week rather than at a weekend could save you money, if you have no choice but to holiday in the peak summer months. "I once changed my outbound flight by just two days and saved nearly £90," she said.
Many travel enthusiasts now use price alerts on comparison sites such as Google Flights and Skyscanner. This notify customers when the fare they've spotted has decreased in price - and gives a good indication as to whether you're overpaying or not.
But sometimes, waiting for a bargain can actually work out more expensive. "In-demand routes like London to Athens or Manchester to Corfu often sell out of their cheapest seats quickly," the travel pros warn.
"If you see a fare that fits your budget, it's better to lock it in... Regional airports often have seasonal routes that offer direct access to the islands. It's worth checking multiple departure points if you're not tied to one city."

Prince George's 'specific dietary request' sees Royal superyacht tender return to mainland

Young Prince George reportedly requested a 'specific dietary item' while sailing with his family between Greek islands Prince William and Kate Middleton's family holiday yachting in the idyllic Greek islands supposedly had an un-royal food request from Prince George. ‌ During the family's sailing holiday on a superyacht last month, the future king's eldest son reportedly had a specific dietary request from a particular restaurant on a Greek island. This very particular request was made as the royals left Kefalonia and were sailing south towards Zakynthos, before making a stop in the middle of the Ionian Sea. ‌ One of the tender boats was dispatched on a mission to pick up a meal possibly from a famous fast food restaurant for the young prince. It comes after Princess Charlotte sparks frenzy with behind-the-scenes photos from Lionesses' win. ‌ A member of the superyacht crew was reportedly dispatched out for a "specific dietary item" not available on the superyacht. A tight-lipped source revealed why one of the tender heads travelled back to the mainland, according to the MailOnline. They said: "George required a specific dietary item which led to the tender going ashore in Zakynthos to purchase it. Nothing extravagant, just something particular." ‌ This source did not reveal exactly what was picked up for the prince but Zakynthos is one of the few Greek islands to have a McDonald's on the mainland. The young royal could have ditched the luxury meals on the superyacht for a Big Mac or chicken nuggets and fries. While it is not clear what Prince George's specific request was, some of the royals have been known to enjoy some fast food favourites most people also dig into. Princess Diana was known to sometimes give Prince William and Prince Harry KFC and burgers when they were growing up. Some of Prince George's favourite meals have been revealed in the past, as celebrity chef Aldo Zilli let slip what the young royal's top dinner picks were after a chat with dad Prince William. Zilli shared: "[William's] amazing - I'm waiting for the call because apparently his little boy's favourite is spaghetti carbonara, so I'm waiting for the call to go and cook it for him." ‌ The chef added: "If George has my carbonara, he will never have another one, so I need to go and make it, let's get the ball rolling, send me to the palace to cook." It's not just spaghetti carbonara that tickles Prince George's taste buds, the Princess of Wales has said that he and Princess Charlotte enjoy making a 'cheesy pasta' together at home, reports the Express. In February 2019, Princess Kate, 42, visited a school in Enfield, north London, and spoke to Ivy Learning Trust's chief executive Matthew Kleiner-Mann. He said: "She was telling us how much her children love cooking and how they cook for her. "They made cheesy pasta the other day. One stirs the flour, one puts the milk and butter in. And they make salads and stuff."

Dormant Russian volcano erupts for first time in 600 years after 8.8 earthquake

Krasheninnikov Volcano has erupted just days after a massive 8.8 earthquake rocked the region and triggered tsunami waves across the Pacific. A volcano in Russia's Far East has erupted for the first time in six centuries, sending a towering ash cloud nearly six miles into the sky. ‌ The Krasheninnikov Volcano, located in the remote Kamchatka Peninsula, began spewing lava overnight—its first confirmed eruption since 1463, according to Russian authorities. ‌ Dramatic images show plumes of smoke and ash rising from the crater and drifting towards the Pacific Ocean. An orange aviation warning has been issued due to the size and reach of the ash cloud, reports the Mirror. ‌ The unexpected eruption comes just days after a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia's Far East coast on Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves, flooding a fishing port, and leaving several people injured. The quake also set off Klyuchevskoy, the region's most active volcano. According to officials, tsunami waves reached heights of 10 to 13 feet in Kamchatka, while smaller waves were recorded as far away as Japan's Hokkaido island (2ft) and the US west coast (up to 5ft in San Francisco). The quake's epicentre was roughly 120 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of 180,000 residents. Many fled buildings in panic as tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific, including for California, Oregon, Washington state, and British Columbia. Though no fatalities were reported, multiple injuries were confirmed in Russia, and power outages affected parts of the region. ‌ Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, confirmed the historic eruption of Krasheninnikov in a statement to Russia's state news agency RIA. 'This is the first historically confirmed eruption of Krasheninnikov Volcano in 600 years,' she said, noting that lava was last documented from the volcano in 1463. ‌ The region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity. Russia's Kuril Islands, which stretch between Kamchatka and Japan, are dotted with active volcanoes and have seen frequent tremors. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! On Sunday, a 6.8 magnitude aftershock struck off the Kamchatka coast. While not as intense as Wednesday's quake, authorities have urged residents to avoid coastal areas as a precaution against further tsunami waves. The 8.8 quake was the most powerful recorded globally since Japan's catastrophic 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which claimed nearly 20,000 lives. Though Wednesday's disaster spared lives, experts warn that aftershocks and volcanic activity could continue in the coming days.
