Manipur Police sets up STF to tackle illegal immigrants

Guwahati: Manipur Police has formed special task forces (STFs) in all districts to rigorously identify and take appropriate legal action against illegal immigrants residing in the state — including nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the Rohingya community from Myanmar. Police said the STFs have been formed in all districts "to strengthen enforcement". "Manipur Police has taken up the issue of illegal immigrants — including Bangladeshi, Rohingya (Myanmar nationals), and Pakistani nationals — with utmost seriousness in view of its growing importance," the police said in a statement issued on Friday. It added that revised instructions outlining the procedure for detection, restriction of movement, and deportation of such individuals have been issued by the police headquarters and circulated to all district superintendents of police across the state. "In addition, a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) for verification and detection of illegal immigrants, including Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals, has been provided to ensure uniform and coordinated action at the district level," it stated. Senior officers are conducting regular and strict reviews of the progress and effectiveness of the actions being taken in this regard. The intensified focus follows eviction drives in neighboring Assam and concerns over the possibility of displaced illegal immigrants entering Manipur.

Tripura cops probe confinement, sexual assault of B'desh girl

Agartala: Gomati district police have launched an investigation into allegations of confinement and sexual assault involving a 19-year-old Bangladeshi girl in Udaipur's Chanban locality. The accused, Zakir Hossain, remains at large as authorities probe human trafficking and illegal migration aspects, additional SP Rushikesh Desai said. The investigation began after police received a tip-off from local residents, leading them to discover the girl at Hossain's residence. She claimed to be from Habiganj district in Bangladesh's Sylhet division and alleged she was held captive for three weeks after illegally entering India due to a romantic relationship with Hossain. "When I wanted to return, I was not allowed and confined to a room for 22 days during which I was forced into sex. On Thursday, I raised an alarm and the neighbours informed the police," the girl said. She added that her belongings were confiscated to prevent her from contacting her family. The girl met Hossain online, who allegedly misled her with promises of a new life together, despite being married with children. Following legal procedures and medical examinations, the girl was handed over to the BSF for repatriation under new MHA guidelines. "Looking at the allegations against Zakir, we are investigating whether she took shelter in the house to stay back in India and made the allegations owing to a dispute," said a police officer investigating the case.

West Bengal Police starts helpline for migrant workers in other states

The officer said all messages will be verified, and we will coordinate with the state authorities concerned to take necessary action Press Trust of India Kolkata The West Bengal Police on Friday launched a WhatsApp helpline, 9147727666, to provide assistance to migrant workers facing problems in other states. The helpline was launched after several complaints were received that people from the state were encountering a range of problems, from workplace exploitation to unsafe living conditions, while working in other states, a police officer said. "In many cases, the victims or their families do not know where or how to report such incidents. To bridge this gap, the state police are urging affected individuals or their family members to promptly inform their local police station or district control room," he said. "The WhatsApp-only helpline is also launched for the purpose, so that families can send messages detailing the nature of the problems, along with the victim's name and address," he said. The officer said all messages will be verified, and we will coordinate with the state authorities concerned to take necessary action. This initiative by the state police comes as the ruling TMC has been alleging that Bengali-speaking people were being harassed in BJP-ruled states, and tagged Bangladeshi.
