Express Tribune11-06-2025

The highly anticipated super-fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Terence Crawford is set for Saturday, September 13 2025, in Las Vegas.
The two boxing titans will clash for the undisputed super-middleweight title, a fight that has been billed as the "fight of the century."
Alvarez, the Mexican pound-for-pound champion, will face the undefeated American Crawford in what promises to be a historic showdown. The event will be streamed globally on Netflix, drawing worldwide attention.
Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, confirmed the details of the fight.
He has dubbed it the "fight of the century" and revealed that this would be the first boxing event promoted in collaboration with UFC president Dana White.
"Turki wants to make the biggest fights that the fans want to see in boxing, and this is right up my alley," White said. "Are you kidding me? The first boxing fight I'm going to promote is Canelo versus Crawford? It's literally a once-in-a-lifetime fight."
Alvarez, 34, holds all four major world titles in the super-middleweight division.
His most recent victory over William Scull in May 2025 saw him reclaim the IBF title and reaffirm his undisputed champion status.
After the fight, Crawford was confirmed as his next opponent, with both men facing off in the ring.
"I'm ready to show once again that I am the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Alvarez said in a statement.
With 63 wins from 67 professional bouts, including just two defeats and two draws, Alvarez is eager to add another triumph to his illustrious career.
Crawford, 37, a four-division, two-weight undisputed champion, will move up from light-middleweight for the bout. With a perfect record of 41-0, Crawford has made it clear that he believes he is the best in the world.
"My perfect record speaks for itself," Crawford said. "I am the best fighter in the world, and no matter the opponent or weight class, I have always come out on top."
The fight will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and the build-up will include a three-city media tour. The fighters will first visit Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 20 June, followed by stops in New York (22 June) and Las Vegas (27 June).
The Alvarez-Crawford showdown is expected to captivate boxing fans around the globe, marking a monumental moment in the sport.

YouTuber Paul cruises past Chavez Jr

ANAHEIM: YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul cruised to victory over Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday in a one-sided cruiserweight bout in California. Paul, whose last fight was a controversial clash with 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in November, dominated from the outset to win by unanimous decision. The 28-year-old influencer, who has earned millions from a string of lucrative contests in a ring career that has spanned 13 fights, had too much speed and power for Chavez Jr. The three judges at ringside scored the 10-round fight 99-91, 97-93, 98-92 in Paul's favour. Chavez Jr, the 39-year-old son of Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, barely looked capable of mustering a response during a one-sided bout. Master meets maestro as Luis Enrique prepares PSG for Messi challenge Chavez Jr failed to land a single punch in the opening round, a pattern that followed the remainder of the contest, with Paul easily outscoring the veteran of 63 professional fights. Paul, who reportedly pocketed around $40 million for his made-for-Netflix fight with Tyson last year, received around $300,000 guaranteed from Saturday's bout. However the American is expected to earn around $8-10 million from the fight once earnings from pay-per-view and sponsorships are taken into account.

Master meets maestro as Luis Enrique prepares PSG for Messi challenge

Paris St Germain coach Luis Enrique will face former protege Lionel Messi on Sunday in a Club World Cup clash at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium that pits the European champions against Inter Miami's team of former Barcelona veterans. The 54-year-old Spaniard, who led PSG to the Champions League crown in May, will now be tasked with confronting the same player who helped him secure nine major titles during their distinguished three-year association at Barcelona. 'I had the chance to coach Leo Messi at the peak of his game. But his peak has actually lasted 10–15 years or more,' Enrique told reporters on Saturday. 'That's why I'd say he's the best football player in history… I had the chance to win every possible title with him at Barcelona.' However, the PSG coach warned there is more to Inter Miami than just Messi. 'There's no doubt whatsoever that they have the right skills and quality,' he added, noting that the American side's lineup features former Barcelona players Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez. Asked about neutralising the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, Enrique stressed a collective approach. 'If we want to stop Leo Messi, we can't rely on just one player because we'll be dead. We need collective defence, he can dribble past any player.' Despite being favourites, PSG remain driven after lifting the Champions League trophy. 'We just won the Champions League, but we're thirsty and eager to keep showing that there's room for improvement,' he said. 'What better place to do so than here in this amazing stadium, facing a team that includes Messi?' mascherano ready for challenge Luis Enrique also highlighted the involvement of former mentee Javier Mascherano as the opposing coach. 'He has everything it takes to become a top coach. I'm not surprised because I knew Mascherano very well as a player. He has been ready for a long time,' he said. Mascherano acknowledged the scale of the task facing PSG. 'We are not naive and we know that we are the weaker team, but that doesn't mean that they will kill us beforehand. We will fight,' the Argentine manager told reporters. Chelsea boss lashes out at Club World Cup organisers after yet another weather delay 'The challenge tomorrow is to test ourselves against the best team in the world. We know how difficult the match will be.' The knockout encounter represents a significant test for both sides, with PSG seeking to add global honours to their European success while Inter Miami aim to prove themselves against elite opposition.

Top seed Pegula eases past Swiatek to win Bad Homburg title

BAD HOMBURG: Top seed Jessica Pegula contained Iga Swiatek's heavy topspin game on grass to earn a 6-4 7-5 victory on Saturday and lift the Bad Homburg Open title. The American held serve throughout and gave up just one breakpoint in the match, denying the Pole her first career title on grass, just two days before the start of Wimbledon. Swiatek has not won a singles title since her 2024 French Open victory. 'I know you say you can't play on grass but you are very, very good on grass,' Pegula said, addressing Swiatek after the match. 'It was a special week.' Pegula won a break at 3-3 in the first set to move 5-3 up. The 31-year-old world number three, chasing her third title of 2025 and her first since April, landed the first set soon afterwards when the Pole sent a forehand long. Swiatek put up a fight in the second set, edging close to a break but failing to carve out a break point. It was Pegula who earned a breakpoint at 5-5 and she converted it with a sizzling crosscourt forehand. Iga Swiatek cruises past second-seed Paolini to reach first ever grass final Pegula held serve to seal her second career title on grass, following last year's win in Berlin. For Swiatek, who shed tears while waiting for the trophy ceremony, it was still a successful week after reaching her first career final on the surface. 'You have an amazing game and you showed it throughout the tournament,' Swiatek told Pegula. 'Hopefully we will have many more finals together.' 'I feel it is going a good way and thank you for the opportunity to play here. This tournament shows there is hope for me on grass,' Swiatek said.
