Writing class among slew of government initiatives to improve class 10 results in Karnataka
Bengaluru: Starting July, class 10 students of govt and govt-aided schools across the state will stay back an extra hour daily to attend a class focused on improving writing skills. The move comes after education department officials found that many students struggled to form even simple sentences in exams, despite knowing the right keywords related to the answer. To tackle this, the department of school education and literacy is launching a one-hour writing class. This is one of the 45 initiatives the department is rolling out to improve the dismal class 10 results in the state. Last year, the pass percentage in SSLC-1 was 62.3% — one of the lowest in the country. Parent outreach The department also plans to strengthen parent outreach programmes this year. A one-on-one parent-teacher meeting will be held every two months to sensitise guardians on the initiatives and progress of the child. Counselling will also be done for parents so there's appropriate and adequate home support for students. A half-day workshop will be held for parents by the headmaster and teachers in Sept to provide information on exam dates, subject paper details, and ensuring a stress-free approach from students to annual exams. Tracking attendance The department has also asked schools to track the attendance of SSLC students. In case a student misses more than seven classes continuously or in a month, there will be a mandatory house visit by the headmaster or subject teacher and two SDMC (school development and monitoring committee) members. The student and the parents will be counselled, and appropriate measures will be taken to get the child back to the classroom. The department will also involve the women and child welfare and RDPR departments, including the gram panchayat and urban local bodies for higher-level interventions, if need be. Wake-up calls While wake-up calls — teachers calling up students in the morning to wake them up — have been a practice in many govt schools, the department plans to roll it out from Sept in all schools. The department will also write to the health and family welfare department for health check-up of class 10 students by July. The department also plans to get everyone on the field, henceforth. All department officials will be given clusters of schools and PU colleges. Every Friday, they will have to spend time, without disrupting the school schedule, to understand the effect of various govt interventions, the teaching-learning process at school, and meet SDMCs to assess activities. In case there's a shortfall of officials, district-level and taluk-level officials from other departments will be roped in. Lesson-based assessment As reported by TOI before, this year on, there will be lesson-based assessment after the completion of each lesson, unlike the earlier practice of having two formative and two summative assessments.

Residential schools in Karnataka did well in SSLC exams-1
Hubballi: While the overall pass percentage in SSLC exams-1 results was 62.3%, as many as 788 residential schools performed well in SSLC results with an overall score of 91%. The residential schools function under Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS). Though all these schools have done well, Belagavi division topped the state with an average of 94.4%. Mysuru division stood second with 92.6%, and Bengaluru third with 90.6% in the overall performance. Kalaburagi division's is the lowest at with 87.9%. P Mainvannan, principal secretary to the govt, social welfare department, had written letters to all schools on their better performance. A source in the department told TOI that residential schools in the Belagavi division have been doing better for years now. "There is the highest demand and competition to get a seat in residential schools in Kittur Karnataka regioin. However, there is less awareness about govt-run residential schools in the Kalyana Karnataka region," the source added. KSEAB Karnataka SSLC Exam 3 Hall Ticket 2025: The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) on June 26 released the final admit cards for candidates appearing in the 2025 Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Class 10 examination 3. The Karnataka SSLC exam 3 will be held from July 5 to July 12, 2025, for repeaters and students seeking result improvement. School principals are required to download the admit cards through the board's website and distribute them to the students promptly. If any discrepancies are found in the admit cards, they must be immediately reported to the branch officers of the respective verification branch. After necessary corrections, the admit cards should be redistributed without delay, the board said while releasing the admit card. Principals must verify that the number of downloaded admit cards matches the number of registered students in their school. If any student's admit card is missing, the school should promptly send the student's details along with valid justification and documents to the board. Importantly, students without photographs on the admit card or center name list will not be allowed to appear for the exam. The responsibility for such oversights lies solely with the head of the concerned school, and the board has clarified that it will not be held accountable. Admit cards must be distributed immediately after download, and students should be clearly instructed to follow all the guidelines mentioned in the card. Additionally, if repeat candidates are instructed to appear for a subject they have already passed, the updated result list—lacking the dot mark—must be verified by the head teacher and submitted to the verification branch officers before the exam commences. The board said that all necessary steps should be taken to ensure that students do not face any difficulties in obtaining their admit cards. Amendments, if any, in the final admit cards should be reported to the respective board officers along with details of the concerned districts.
