Oisin Murphy lands German Group One and €100,000 prize money
Despite being winless in three outings this campaign, the Too Darn Hot colt had shown promise when fourth in the 2000 Guineas and sixth in the Derby, before finishing behind subsequent Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Trinity College in the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Dispatched across Europe in search of elite-level triumph, in a contest Bin Suroor and Murphy captured with Benbatl in 2018, Tornado Alert remained within striking distance throughout before quickening impressively to hit the front midway down the home stretch.
Map Of Stars, attempting to deliver trainer Francis-Henri Graffard a second Group One victory in consecutive days following Calandagan's King George triumph at Ascot on Saturday, rallied from deeper in the field to mount his challenge under James Doyle in the Wathnan Racing colours. However, despite his best efforts he couldn't reel in Tornado Alert, who was comfortably clear at the finish, with the victory securing €100,000 in prize money for the winning connections.
Bin Suroor said: "He won well, the ground was heavy and he's never run before on this ground, but he handled it well.
"I said to Oisin before the race 'just keep him happy and give him a chance', but he was travelling good all the way and when he came off the bridle he saw it out well."
Tornado Alert has been entered into the big races at the Juddmonte International in York and the Celebration Mile at Goodwood next month, but Bin Suroor isn't hurrying to finalise future plans, stating: "We'll see how he comes back after the race and then we'll make a decision.
"He's a horse who is improving all the time. He ran well at Royal Ascot, his form is very good and he has improved every time he has run.
"Physically he looks better now than when he finished fourth in the Guineas, but with time and age that is what you would expect.
"He has plenty of speed, but I think a mile and a quarter is his best trip at the moment."

Granit Xhaka is closing in on a move to Sunderland after they agreed a £17m (€19.58m) deal with Bayer Leverkusen for the former Arsenal midfielder. Xhaka has been eager to return to the Premier League and now has his wish after Sunderland agreed to pay £13m (€14.9m) upfront for the 32-year-old Switzerland international, with the remaining £4m (€4.6m) made up of add-ons. Le Bris wanted to add greater Premier League experience to his midfield and had enquired about the availability of Jordan Henderson before the former Sunderland player elected to join Brentford after leaving Ajax. During Xhaka's seven years at Arsenal he won the FA Cup twice and, overall, made 297 appearances for the club. Xhaka would become Sunderland's seventh signing of the summer, following in the footsteps of Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, Simon Adingra. Chemsdine Talbi, Reinildo Mandava and Enzo Le Fée. Of the new arrivals only Adingra has prior Premier League experience having made 60 appearances for Brighton. Meanwhile, Xhaka's fellow Swiss international Dan Ndoye remains a target for Nottingham Forest, who are working on a deal to sign the winger from Bologna. Serie A pace will suit Evan Ferguson's style after AS Roma move
Evan Ferguson has been at AS Roma officially for less than a week, but he seems to be making an impression on the club's vociferous supporters. The Republic of Ireland international has been getting minutes into his legs, scoring four goals in a training match against minnows UniPomezia, who have been recently promoted to Italy's Serie D. Then on Saturday, he found the net again against German second division side and multiple former Bundesliga champions Kaiserslautern, nicking the ball off the goalkeeper and rolling it into an empty net in the 1-0 friendly win. The fact that neither game was a competitive one should of course temper expectations about what the 20-year-old could achieve in Serie A during his season-long loan. But crucially, unlike last season, he will have had a full and injury-free pre-season under his belt going into the campaign and he is going in with less expectation around him after seeing his progress stall somewhat over the past year. On that, former Drogheda United and Shamrock Rovers defender Graham Gartland also feels the style of play in Italy will suit Ferguson down to a tee as he told this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast. "He strikes me as a player that needs games to get his match sharpness up," said Gartland, a former team-mate of Ferguson's father Barry at Longford Town in 2003 and 2004. "But he can ease into that a little bit. He has a good pre-season behind him in Italy and once that comes, his sharpness comes. And once his sharpness comes, then he is a different player. "Because he is quite tall and he has a presence about him, that's where he has a chance to go and work on his feet, and the pace of the play in Italy will be different to the Premier League and I think that will suit him as well. "You see it with the likes of Edin Dzeko who went there from Man City and he did really well and he strikes me as a similar player to that, that the tempo of the game might be a bit slower and it would allow him just to build into that." In the wake of Ferguson's friendly cameos, Roma's new manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who enjoyed success over a long period with Atalanta - including on Irish soil when he led the Bergamo club to Europa League glory at Aviva Stadium in May 2024 - has spoken about the need to make the most of his talents, saying: "We need to get to know Evan and exploit his depth. In some situations, we could have looked for him more." And former Brighton, Celtic, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell pointed to the player who netted the Europa League final hat-trick for Atalanta as an example of how Gasperini can improve players. "I think with a manager like Gasperini there, I think he's really going to take Evan under his wing and make him a proper, proper player this season," he said on the podcast. "You see what he's done with Ademola Lookman. Lookman was kind of in a little bit of a similar situation to Evan where he was doing ok but you were waiting on that flame to ignite; where he went to Gasperini at Atalanta and that Atalanta side were amazing - high energy, lots of shots on target, balls into the box, I loved the way they played - so if Evan can mimic anything like what Ademola Lookman did, he'll have a great season."

Illinois drops back in trip for Goodwood Cup test
Illinois and Scandinavia give Aidan O'Brien a strong hand in his bid for a fifth victory in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. The Ballydoyle handler saddled the brilliant Yeats to land the Group One contest in both 2006 and 2008, a feat repeated by his latest superstar stayer Kyprios, who struck gold in 2022 before regaining his crown 12 months ago. Following the latter's retirement, Illinois was drafted into the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and performed admirably to finish best of the rest behind the front-running Trawlerman - and with the latter not in attendance, the four-year-old is favourite to go one better on the Sussex Downs. O'Brien said: "He ran well in the Gold Cup and we're looking forward to this, obviously it's a shorter trip than Ascot. "We thought this would be a nice third race back for him this year and we've been very happy with him since Ascot." Connections have a major second string to their bow in the form of Scandinavia, a dominant winner of the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket three weeks ago and as the sole three-year-old in the field, he is in receipt of a stone in weight from Illinois and the rest of his rivals. "He was good in Newmarket and he seems in good form. Obviously he's only a baby, but he liked the extra distance in Newmarket the last day and seems to have come out of the race well," O'Brien added. Despite deciding against running Trawlerman, John and Thady Gosden are well represented, with Gold Cup fourth Sweet William joined by French Master and Military Academy. French Master claimed his fourth win from six career starts in the Copper Horse Stakes at the Royal meeting and now tests the water over two miles on a track where he has been successful before. John Gosden said: "Sweet William has been in very good form. He broke well in the Gold Cup, it was a tough race and in the end the two and a half (miles) was a little too far for him - he's a two-mile to two-and-a-quarter-mile horse, but he ran a brave race. "He's in very good form and he knows Goodwood well, so back we go again." Of French Master, the trainer added: "I think he's a horse who will rise to the occasion. He won in good style (at Royal Ascot), but he's going from a handicap to a completely open Group One. "We're hopeful he'll run a good race and we're very much looking forward to running him and seeing the jump in class. If he doesn't handle it, we can regroup." Another who appears better suited to the drop in trip will be Saeed bin Suroor's Dubai Future, who split Illinois and Sweet William when third in the Gold Cup. Bin Suroor said: "Dubai Future worked well on Thursday and heads to Goodwood in good order. "He ran a good race in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but two miles suits him better, as he showed in the Dubai Gold Cup.
