The Dallas Stars have traded defenseman Matt Dumba and a 2028 second-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok. This move helps the Stars manage their salary cap, acquiring a younger player.
The Penguins gain a veteran blueliner and a valuable future draft asset.

2028 draft pick
In the unpredictable world of professional hockey, team executives often play a high-stakes game of chess, intriguing players and draft picks to gain an advantage. Recently, as the Dallas Stars decided to part ways with seasoned defenseman Matt Dumba, along with a 2028 second-round draft selection, a notable swap occurred, sending them to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In return, Dallas welcomed younger blueliner Vladislav Kolyachonok into their ranks.
This strategic exchange appears to be a clear move by the Stars to soothe some financial burden. Dumba, currently in the final year of a substantial two-season agreement, carried a significant financial commitment. The Stars were evidently "eager to rid themselves of the veteran defenseman's contract," especially given their 'win-now mode' and need for cap relief.
On the other side of the ledger, Pittsburgh's general manager, Kyle Dubas, is proving himself a shrewd operator. He "sure knows how to take advantage of teams when they're dealing with salary-cap issues." By taking on Dumba's remaining contract, the Penguins secured a crucial long-term asset in the 2028 second-round pick, even with his 'declined' performance in recent seasons.
This aligns with Dubas's detectable pattern of acquiring future draft capital by accommodating other teams' salary constraints.
As the commentary noted, "With all due respect to Dumba, this is all about the second-round pick." This mirrors past moves where Dubas embraced what "some deem as bad contracts in the short term to add solid future assets," like the accession of Kevin Hayes and Cody Glass.
For the Penguins, Dumba's arrival offers immediate defensive depth, particularly if they proceed with potential trades involving other key defensemen.
While Dumba 'might not be the player he once was,' he remains 'a reasonably solid NHL player' whose presence can only aid a defensive corps currently enduring struggles.

Furthermore, should the team face difficulties this season, Dumba could become "another asset that could be flipped," providing further flexibility. Meanwhile, Dallas integrates Kolyachonok, a potential talent claimed by Pittsburgh earlier on waivers, now offered with an opportunity to grow within a new system.

Raman Vijayan named Gokulam Kerala women's team head coach

Raman Vijayan (right) with N Sivasakthi CHENNAI: Former India men's international Raman Vijayan has forayed into women's football. Vijayan was on Wednesday appointed the head coach of three-time Indian Women's League (IWL) champions Gokulam Kerala FC. While ending Gokulam's IWL trophy wait is high on the Tamil Nadu man's agenda – they finished runners-up in the last two seasons – he is approaching the task with a broader view. The upcoming IWL season is likely to run from September to January. 'Every management recruits a coach with the target of winning a title, so it (bagging the IWL trophy) is the primary goal. But I am looking beyond that,' Vijayan, who last served as the assistant coach of Indian Super League (ISL) club Chennaiyin FC, told TOI. 'In the last few years, teams with good squads went on to win the IWL; the results were based on the strength of the squads. I would like to create a difference there. I want to play an attacking brand of football irrespective of the personnel we have. People must look at our team and say: 'Can girls deliver such a style?' I will put in all the effort to achieve it. To get there, support from the club and continuity are important,' said the former India forward. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Lợi ích khi giao dịch CFD Bitcoin IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Vijayan's lack of coaching experience in women's football is not proving to be a hindrance as he strives to turn into a 'trend-setter'. Add to it the fact that he will be the chief coach of a top-level team for the first time in his career. 'My ambition is to deliver proper football; more than winning titles and matches, I want to introduce a trend that Indian women's football has never seen. It should help Indian football on the whole as well; I want to create a team from which about five players can go and play for the national team in the future,' added Vijayan. On why he chose to venture into the women's game, Vijayan said: 'I had offers to become an assistant coach again, but I decided that I would only take up head coach's role upon returning from a break (he was away since the end of the 2023-24 season). I was fine with the I-League or IWL. Indian women's football has been on the rise recently, so I felt that it was the right time to take up a role in the IWL.' Bradley Beal was in Phoenix Suns (Image via Getty Images) A three-time All-Star guard is in route to Los Angeles. Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Bradley Beal and the Phoenix Suns have finalized a contract buyout on Wednesday. After he passes waivers, the NBA player will sign with the LA Clippers. The Phoenix Suns are able to extend and release the remaining portion of his deal. His exit is the second significant change to the team's roster since general manager Brian Gregory took over for James Jones in early May. Bradley Beal leaves Phoenix Suns after contract buyout and joins Los Angeles Clippers in major offseason move The Los Angeles Clippers are currently home to Bradley Beal. Following a significant shift in his career with the Phoenix Suns, he made this move. The announcement follows his two seasons in Phoenix. He will return a portion of the $110.8 million he owed over the last two years of his contract in order to negotiate a buyout agreement. The NBA player has signed a lucrative five-year, $251 million contract in 2022, which included a no-trade clause, and he has two years left on it. Bradley Beal utilized his no-trade clause to block clubs he didn't want to join when Phoenix Sun attempted to deal him. As a result, the team was forced to honor his big contract. Now, recently, the player and the Phoenix Suns reached an agreement on a contract buyout on July 16, 2025. Of the remaining $110 million, he forfeited roughly $13.9 million in order to be released. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The "waive-and-stretch" technique was employed by the team. After that, he was free to select his next team following the buyout. He decided to go with the LA Clippers, who were searching for scoring options. Ever since rumors of Bradley Beal's termination in Phoenix Sun started to circulate, he had been associated with the LA Clippers. He signed a two-year, $11 million contract with the team, which included a player option in the second year. Bradley Beal gains stability from this contract, which also allows him to potentially test free agency once more the following summer. With the LA team, he is expected to join John Collins, Ivica Zubac, Kawhi Leonard, and James Harden in the starting lineup.
