Romeo puppy improving after allegedly dipped in boiling water by owner's daughter
A dog is recovering after suffering abuse allegedly by its owner's daughter.
With 3rd degree burns over most of his body, Gideon had intense medical treatment.
The group helping him recover is allowing visitors on Sunday to meet Gideon.
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - It's hard to believe that the spunky Jack Russell Terrier mix almost didn't survive one of the most unimaginable animal abuse cases in January after being dipped in boiling water, allegedly by the dog owner's daughter.
What they're saying
Kelly Lebonty, who is the director of Detroit Animal Welfare Group based in Romeo, took on the massive responsibility of rescuing this puppy from the Detroit home and, along with the vet and Gideon's foster family, has been providing constant care over the last 3 months.
"I have been in anesthesia for 25 years, giving anesthesia to humans and taking care of animals for 13 years now, and he was in the most pain I have ever seen any living being."
With 3rd degree burns over most of his body, Gideon had intense medical treatment which included fresh fish skin grafts, pain meds, creams, and daily bandage changes.
"He was having nightmares and would wake himself up crying and fearful, and just didn't want to be touched by any humans. Even though he was a 3 or 4 month old puppy, he still knows," she said.
Dig deeper
Gideon has improved immensely, but Lebonty says he'll always have to deal with skin damage, limited mobility, and suffering physically and psychologically.
Gideon had just recently turned the corner, playing with toys and humans.
"There have been so many awesome people that have come together for Gideon from across the world," she said.
So on Sunday, Gideon supporters will get to meet the courageous pup.
DAWG, as the group is known, is hosting a fundraiser on Sunday at Bubbas in Macomb.
Sadly, vet bills still need to be paid, and the fight to prioritize police investigations, prosecutions, and stronger sentences is far from over.
What's next
Ten weeks later, Lebonty says no one has been arrested for torturing and nearly killing little Gideon.
In response, Prosecutor Worthy and her office say they are committed to this case, and it's still under investigation by Detroit police. They want those concerned about Gideon to know they have been working continuously on the case, and unlike TV crime shows, some cases take longer than others.

Detroit mayoral candidate Solomon Kinloch pleaded guilty to 1993 assault involving ex-wife, records show
The Brief A Detroit mayoral candidate was previously convicted of assault and battery after an incident involving his then-wife in 1993. Solomon Kinloch threatened the woman with a knife and struck her in the head, court records and testimony from Southfield police show. DETROIT (FOX 2) - Solomon Kinloch, a candidate running for Detroit mayor, was previously convicted of assault and battery after an incident involving his then-wife more than three decades ago. The church pastor pleaded guilty after the 1993 incident that included allegations of domestic violence. Big picture view According to court records verified by the Oakland County Prosecutor, Kinloch assaulted his wife multiple times in the couple's Southfield apartment during an evening in 1993, leading to charges before an eventual plea deal. Testimony from the responding Southfield police officer includes details that Kinloch threw a glass at the victim, threatened her with a knife, and eventually struck her in the back of her head with the handle of the weapon. When the police arrived, the victim was bleeding from a cut she suffered on her hand, had scratches on her face, and could not walk because of injuries she suffered from the thrown glass, according to observations from the responding officer. Kinloch was charged with felonious assault before pleading guilty to the lesser charge of assault and battery. He was sentenced to 12 months of probation. Oakland County court records also show he violated his probation and had his sentence extended. Kinloch and the victim remained married for several more years before the two divorced in 2004. The other side FOX 2 reached out to Kinloch's campaign for comment. A spokesperson with the campaign responded with a statement saying: "More than thirty years ago as a nineteen-year-old, Pastor Kinloch made a mistake. He's never attempted to hide it or run from it. Rather, he has discussed it as part of his ministry and used it to help put countless others on the path to redemption. Pastor Kinloch preaches about second chances, forgiveness, and accepting that no one is perfect. Political rivals bringing this thirty-year-old incident up while people are voting is poli-tricks, but we will remain focused on delivering for Detroit, investing in neighborhoods, not just Downtown, attacking poverty, and creating opportunity for all Detroiters." State of the race While Detroit's mayoral primary is scheduled for Aug. 5, voting is already underway in the nonpartisan race. Absentee ballots have already been mailed out and early voting begins on July 26. Over several months, nine candidates who filed to run have jockeyed for the position. They include members of the city council, the business community, those with legal and police backgrounds, and others. The backstory Kinloch has positioned himself as a political outsider in the campaign to be Detroit's next mayor. Characterizing himself as a community leader with humble roots, he has led the Triumph Church in Detroit for decades. Serving at the helm since 1998, he helped grow the congregation into the tens of thousands with members across Metro Detroit. Kinloch has also scored significant endorsements during the campaign, including one from the United Auto Workers Union. The Source Details of this story were confirmed following a Freedom-of-information request made by Robert Davis, a community activist. He is not affiliated with any campaign. FOX 2 verified the story through Oakland County court records. Kinloch's identity in the police report was verified using his date of birth and the affidavit he signed when he announced a run for mayor.

Illegal Venezuelan migrant pleads guilty to crash that killed boy a day before his 12th birthday
An illegal migrant from Venezuela has pleaded guilty to causing a head-on crash in Missouri that killed a boy just a day before his 12th birthday. Endrina Bracho, 34, was driving with her own two kids on Dec. 20, 2023, when her Dodge van crossed onto the opposite lane in Hazelwood, a suburb of St. Louis, at 75 mph — 35 mph over the speed limit, Fox 2 reported. She smashed head-on into a Jeep carrying Travis Wolfe, who spent several months on life support until succumbing to his injuries on March 6, 2024, a day before his 12th birthday. 4 Travis Wolfe, a 12-year-old Missouri boy, died three months after his family's Jeep was hit by an illegal immigrant speeding on the wrong side of the road. FOX 2 St. Louis Bracho's two children were taken to the same hospital with serious injuries, while Travis' parents, Timothy and Stephanie, were treated at another hospital for multiple broken bones. Bracho pleaded guilty in St. Louis County Circuit Court on Monday to first-degree involuntary manslaughter and two counts of second-degree assault. Her blind plea means she agreed to plead guilty without prior discussion or agreement with the prosecution about sentencing, Fox 2 noted. 4 Edina Bracho, 33, pleaded guilty to first-degree involuntary manslaughter. St. Louis County She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 12 and prosecutors have recommended up to 27 years in jail. Prosecutors dismissed two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child and two misdemeanor traffic charges, related to her children. 4 Travis Wolfe spent three months at St. Louis Children's Hospital. FOX 2 St. Louis Court papers previously noted that Bracho 'was here illegally from Venezuela,' without detailing exactly when she came. While her status 'did not play a part in [the] investigation,' it made it 'difficult identifying all parties involved because we didn't have documentation or identifications in the vehicle to try to figure out who the two juveniles and the suspect were,' Hazelwood police Sgt. Scott Schnurbusch previously told Fox 2. Wolfe's death was highlighted by US Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) as a heartbreaking example of the failed immigration policies of then-President Joe Biden. 4 Travis Wolfe succumbed to his injuries just a day before his 12th birthday.. FOX 2 St. Louis 'Travis Wolfe, a 12-year old Missouri boy killed by an illegal migrant,' Hawley tweeted in March last year. 'This is what an open border does. Say his name.'

Brayz Hamburger owner furious after police pursuit ends in his Hazel Park restaurant's destruction
The Brief A Hazel Park restaurant owner is furious by the destruction to his business after a police chase ended in damage Wednesday morning. The Brayz Hamburger joint has operated for 80 years. Now, the city says its unsafe to be inside due to the damage. Warren police were pursing four suspects behind stolen Kias from a mobile home park. HAZEL PARK, Mich. (FOX 2) - A beloved hamburger joint in Hazel Park is picking up the pieces after a police pursuit that started in Warren ended in destruction on Wednesday morning. Staff inside the 24-hour restaurant Brayz Hamburgers were filling orders when a vehicle chased by Warren police crashed into the building, closing it for the indefinite future. Local perspective Paul Mirdita is furious with the way his Wednesday has gone. What is normally one of his busiest days on 9 Mile and Dequindre turned into a giant mess as he picks up the pieces from the beloved restaurant in Hazel Park. "This is a stupid, man. This should never have happened," the co-owner said. Brayz Hamburger has operated for 80 years. But longevity counts for nothing when a wild police chase ends with a fleeing vehicle crashing through the front door. "Could've been eight dead people now and my bread and my butter are closed down for what? For a stupid car that you could work and save your money and buy," Mirdita said. To add insult to injury, the business has a colorful paper now decorating his front door from the city warning it is unfit for human occupancy due to the damage. Big picture view Rewinding the clock to before 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Warren police received a report of multiple Kia vehicles being stolen from the Lafayette mobile home community near 8 Mile and Warner. Warren police chased the stolen Kia westbound on 9 Mile, blowing a red light before colliding with a white Lincoln and crashing into the restaurant. Four people were arrested and a loaded handgun was found in the stolen car. Zoom Out The restaurant owner is upset with the thieves. But he's also irritated with police for continuing the pursuit. "Let the car go -who cares? It is not worth it. You're putting people's lives in danger. And who did it? The police. I'm sorry, it is what it is," said Mirdita. The other co-owner, File Mirdita, said those working at the time were scared by what happened. "My employees were terrified when they left. They were all shaking and it was heartbreaking," she said. "It was so sad." Remarkably, there were only minor injuries after the incident. But it will take longer than the day to get things back up and running. "Now I'm closed on one of my busiest days and I have people to take care of and pay and bills and taxes and nobody gives a sh*t," said Paul. The Source Previous reporting and interviews with employees at the business were cited for this story.
