First male gibbon birth in captivity recorded in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has made history with the first known birth of a male gibbon in captivity, announced Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew.
The unprecedented birth on May 8 of a North Bornean Gibbon, scientifically known as Hylobates funereus and locally called 'Kalawot', marks a significant milestone.
It is believed to be the first captive birth of its kind globally.
Sabah-born primatologist Mariani Ramli, Founder and President of the Gibbon Conservation Society (GCS), gave Liew the honour of naming the baby gibbon born to parents Candyman and Manis.
The pair were rescued at the Borneo Gibbon Rehabilitation Project (Borneo GReP) site in Kg Kiau Bersatu, Kota Belud.
"The birth is a historic first for this endangered species in captivity at a rehabilitation centre. I chose the name 'Nabalu' (meaning Spirit of the Mountain) for this baby gibbon," Liew said, adding that she symbolically adopted the infant.
The Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, through the Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL), supports the Society's gibbon conservation, rehabilitation, and re-wilding project.
Founded in 2013, GCS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-wilding gibbons, which are often victims of the illegal wildlife pet trade. Borneo GReP was established in 2022.
Mariani, Director of Operations at Borneo GReP, stated that Nabalu and his parents will be released back into the wild as a family when Nabalu is over six months old, demonstrating readiness for re-wilding.
Successful gibbon re-wilding requires meeting criteria set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Best Practices Guidelines, including brachiation, minimal time on the ground, proper socialisation, and successful co-parenting.
The release site must be agreed upon by all stakeholders, including KePKAS, JHL, GCS, and the local community.
Liew congratulated Mariani on her international recognition in gibbon conservation, having been named World Female Ranger Ambassador for Resilience twice, in 2024 and 2025.
"With your passion and relentless effort, you have made Sabah and Malaysia proud of your leadership in gibbon conservation through your Society," Liew remarked.
The two gibbon rehabilitation sites in Sabah and Pahang are Malaysia's only IUCN accredited gibbon rehabilitation project centres.
Notably, GCS owns, runs, and manages the Borneo gibbon rehabilitation project site (Borneo GReP) in Kota Belud and the site in Raub, Pahang, is managed by Operations Director Ana Jonessy.
Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) Director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar, present during the courtesy call, noted that gibbons rescued by the department are handed over to Borneo GReP for rehabilitation.

KOTA KINABALU: Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Seri Christina Liew has expressed satisfaction with the progress of road patching work, clogged drain clearance and grass cutting services provided by the relevant authorities, following her latest visit to various parts of her constituency. Most recently, she was on her routine site inspection to identify roads and drains overgrown with grass that needed prompt attention. 'I hope the condition of Jalan Bukit Punai will be improved to ease mobility for residents in the area,' said Liew, adding that Lorong Sena 1 needs resurfacing. Accompanying the Api-Api Assemblywoman were engineers from the Public Works Department (JKR) and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK). Also present were Kapitan Nancy Chua Li Wah, Kapitan Margaret Chong Moi Hiong, Api-Api Community Development Leader Theresa Chong Mui Lan and Community Development Officer Yoong Yik Tin. Appropriate action has since been taken to cut the grass and clear the drainage along Jalan Menteri, Jalan Kebajikan, Jalan Sang Kancil (1, 2 & 3), and Jalan Tadika Tzu Yu. To prevent flooding, a section of the drain overgrown with vegetation along a stretch of Jalan Sena in the Sunny Garden housing estate was also addressed immediately. Big plans to expand sun bear conservation centre, but funding, manpower remain challenges, says CEO
KOTA KINABALU: There are big plans to see the expansion of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) which currently houses 42 rescued sun bears, but funding and manpower continues to be their biggest challenge. BSBCC founder and chief executive officer Dr Wong Siew Te said that since its inception in 2008, the centre had come from a small sanctuary depending on public funding, government assistance to sales of tickets and souvenirs to sustain operations. Among their biggest supporters were the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, he said, adding that the ministry even helped them raise funds for the Centre to get off the ground in 2008, and gave them a grant for operational costs in 2013. On his future plans, he envisions a third observation platform, an interpretation centre and new office building, and a captive breeding enclosure. 'I hope the ministry will continue to support our work in the future,' Wong said, adding that for the BSBCC, these construction plans need financing. Separately, they also need to raise RM1mil to build the Field Office and staff house for the Tabin Sun Bear Project, he stated. According to him, all the sun bears at the BSBCC had been rescued from illegal pet keeping after their mothers were brutally killed by poachers. Over the past 17 years, the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) had rescued 70 sun bear orphans and sent them to the conservation centre, Wong disclosed. Sun bears are a Class 1 Protected Species under the state's Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. Other than the ministry, the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), an agency under the ministry, has also assisted BSBCC in many ways to promote the Centre to local and international tourism markets as well. Earlier, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said the ministry has nurtured the growth and development of BSBCC since its inception in 2008. She said BSBCC, the only one of its kind in the world for protection of this endangered species, is a partnership project with the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), an agency under the ministry, and Sabah Forestry Department. "Last year, we (allocated RM228,420 for the construction of Phase 1 of the Entrance Foyer, which has since been completed. 'This year saw an additional allocation of RM250,000 for construction of Phase 2 of the Entrance Foyer. Work is expected to start this year," Liew said. She noted that this 17-year-old tourist attraction, which is home to 42 rescued sun bears, draws local and international visitors like a magnet. "I was informed by Wong that the Centre received 79,362 visitors in 2024, with an average of 6,613 visitors per month. 'That year, international visitors from 115 countries visited, with the top three coming from United Kingdom, Australia and Italy,' Liew said. She said the peak season is from July to October, generating the most number of visitors with more Malaysian visitors during the school holidays. She said educationists, researchers, school children and teachers, wildlife conservationists, animal lovers, and the like make up the composition of visitors and tourists, the majority being nature lovers and nature-based tourists. 'Many may not be aware that the BSBCC is also the main implementing agency for the 10-year State Sun Bear Action Plan,' Liew said. According to Wong, the main attraction to visitors at BSBCC is watching the sun bears' natural behaviour in their natural habitat, the rainforest. He said visitors can sometimes see the bears climbing and sleeping high on the trees while random feedings enable the visitors to see them eating as well. "We try our best to take good care of the bears and rehabilitate them. Thirteen rescued sun bears were successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild so far,' he said. 'In addition, the latest two rescued sun bear cubs have been sent to Tabin Wildlife Reserve to undergo the 'soft-release' programme,' Wong said.

Sabah always prioritises the environment: Liew

Tuaran: Sabah has always prioritised the environment, recognising it as both an integral part and a strategic pillar of sustainable development, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew. In her speech, Liew emphasised the need for policies that incorporate environmental considerations and standards into all development activities to ensure both social and ecological sustainability. She said the ongoing implementation of the Action Plans under the Sabah State Policy on the Environment 2019, carried out by various government agencies, reflects the State's continued commitment to environmental stewardship. 'In 2017, the Sabah State Policy on the Environment was launched, serving as our guiding framework alongside the Environment Protection Enactment 2002,' she said at the World Environment Day 2025 celebration, here, Thursday. The text of her speech was delivered by the Ministry's Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mary Isidore Malangking. Liew said environmental education is a dynamic process that builds awareness, knowledge and skills on environmental issues, ultimately driving behavioural and attitudinal changes that support conservation and sustainable management. To address the complex challenges of environmental education in the State, Liew said the Sabah Environmental Education Policy was developed and officially launched in November 2009, as a vital platform to align stakeholder efforts in implementing comprehensive and effective environmental education initiatives. 'I am proud to say that Sabah is the first state in Malaysia to have an environmental education policy,' she said. Liew also highlighted several key milestones that have advanced environmental education in Sabah, including the launch of Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar (Serasi) in 2003 and the establishment of the Sabah Environmental Education Network in 2005. In a related development, she said the Environment Protection Department of Sabah recently conducted a study titled 'Development of Educational Materials and Best Practices Report on the Implementation of the Sabah Environmental Education Policy', which, among other outcomes, produced educational resources aimed at strengthening environmental education delivery.
