UNESCO adds Salma Geopark, North Riyadh Geopark to its global network

Arab News17-04-2025
RIYADH: UNESCO has recognized Saudi Arabia's geological diversity by adding the North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark to its global network — marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom's environmental conservation and sustainable development efforts.
This prestigious designation opens new frontiers for geological tourism, scientific research, and international collaboration.
Hussam Al-Turki, director of the Saudi Geoparks Initiative, emphasized that this achievement transcends mere classification. It represents a strategic vision deeply aligned with Saudi Vision 2030's goal of establishing the Kingdom as a global leader in environmental sustainability.
'From the beginning, we aspired for these geoparks to be more than geological sites — they are living platforms that narrate Earth's stories, bearing witness to the passage of time and reflecting the rich natural diversity we possess,' Al-Turki told Arab News.
Each geopark boasts a unique geological character. North Riyadh Geopark offers visitors fossilized coral reefs dating back over 150 million years, alongside limestone caves and mountain ranges that unveil geological transformations.
Salma Geopark in Hail presents a dramatic landscape of rare volcanic formations, including calderas, lava fields, and volcanic craters that chronicle millions of years of geological activity.
Beyond tourism, these geoparks represent promising research platforms. Universities and scientific centers, both locally and internationally, now have unprecedented opportunities to study Earth's layers and natural phenomena.
Al-Turki noted that the project adheres to the highest global standards, with UNESCO conducting rigorous evaluations before approving the sites.
This classification sends a clear message to the world: preserving geological heritage is not a luxury but a developmental commitment and an investment in a green future.
'With additional sites under development, Saudi Arabia is redefining humanity's relationship with the Earth,' Al-Turki concluded.

PIF's Adeera to operate hotel portfolio across Qiddiya City

RIYADH: Saudi-grown hotel brands will be introduced across Qiddiya City under a new strategic partnership between its developer and Adeera, the hospitality group backed by the Public Investment Fund. The agreement with Qiddiya Investment Co. — also a PIF company — marks a new milestone for Adeera, which was launched in December 2024 to develop and manage a portfolio of homegrown hotel brands. As part of the deal, Adeera will operate a range of hotels at the Qiddiya giga-project, including Alia, a Saudi luxury brand; Sama, a five-star lifestyle offering; and Noor, a mid-market concept, according to a press release. This move aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goal of making tourism and hospitality a key pillar of economic diversification. It also supports PIF's efforts to build a comprehensive tourism infrastructure in Qiddiya City, which aims to attract millions of global visitors with world-class destinations such as Six Flags Qiddiya and Aquarabia, the region's largest water park. Abdullah Al-Dawood, managing director of Qiddiya Investment Co., said: 'This partnership reflects Qiddiya's commitment to delivering exceptional experiences rooted in excellence, quality, and Saudi identity.' He added: 'Adeera brings the depth, readiness, and Saudi-rooted identity needed to bring our hospitality vision to life. We are leveraging a national champion purpose-built to deliver authentic Saudi hospitality at scale.' The deal aims to bring a fresh approach to hotel management and operations, with a focus on reflecting Saudi identity in hospitality, in line with Vision 2030's tourism and diversification goals. 'This partnership sets the tone for what Adeera was built to do — to power Saudi Arabia's ambitious hospitality pipeline with living, breathing brands that embody the hospitable Saudi culture. We are not just managing hotels; we are showcasing what Saudi hospitality means on the world stage,' said Stefan Leser, CEO of Adeera. Qiddiya City is a new destination being developed from the ground up around entertainment, sports, and culture. Located in the Tuwaiq Mountains about 40 minutes from Riyadh, it aims to offer a wide range of attractions and experiences for residents and visitors alike. Expected to employ over 200,000 people and attract more than 40 million visitors annually, the city is positioned to play a significant role in Saudi Arabia's tourism growth and economic development.

Red Sea International launches volunteer initiatives on World Mangrove Day

RIYADH: Red Sea International launched a community volunteer initiative to celebrate World Mangrove Day, the SPA reported on Wednesday. It is part of a broader commitment to protect coastal ecosystems and empower residents of the Red Sea areas. The event took place at the Mangrove Park near the bridge to Shura Island within the Red Sea destination, with more than 100 volunteers, including residents and hospitality sector workers, taking part. Employees of The St. Regis Red Sea Resort, Nujuma, Six Senses Southern Dunes, Desert Rock and Shebara joined forces with Green Umluj for mangrove transplantation into the healthy coastal environment of the park. Attendees included representatives from the National Center For Vegetation Cover, identified as a strategic RSG partner in pursuing mutual mangrove recovery and improvement goals. Raed Al-Basseet, group chief environment and sustainability officer at Red Sea Global, said that the initiative embodies the regenerative tourism approach, which goes beyond environmental protection to empower local communities. Mangrove trees produce among the most effective ecosystems for carbon absorption, he added. Coinciding with the event was the official launch of The Red Sea International Volunteer Program. It aims to empower residents of the Red Sea areas, foster a culture of environmental responsibility and provide opportunities for specialized volunteering. The program seeks to activate community participation in renewable projects, build capacity and strengthen partnerships with the nonprofit sector. This supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Red Sea International's strategy based on its 'From People to Planet' slogan. RSG executed the volunteer drive through its Jewar App, a platform created for meaningful dialogue with local communities at the Red Sea destination. As part of the effort, more than 30 local residents took up an offer to volunteer. To enhance environmental education and foster involvement, participants were also invited to engage in a Mangrove Trivia activity.
