House preparations for impeachment trial to continue amid reconciliation talk
The House prosecution panel will prepare for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte with the "same vigor and eagerness" as before President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said he was open to reconciliation with the Duterte family.
San Juan Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora, a member of the House prosecution panel, made the remark amid fears that the statement on reconciliation might affect the prosecution of the Vice President in the impeachment trial.
'If there are charges against the vice president such as the impeachment case, I believe that he's open to having that, having the impeachment proceedings go through. But I think it's just natural for him to be polite,' Zamora told reporters.
But Zamora said their level of preparations has not changed.
'We will pursue it with the same eagerness, same vigor as before,' Zamora said.
Zamora said that the stand of the members of the House of Representatives who signed the impeachment complaint remained.
'We have to remember that more than 200 plus congressmen signed it. And I would like to believe that these congressmen thought about their signatures on the impeachment," Zamora said.
"For example, there was Congressman Rufus Rodriguez who spoke before all of us and talked about different scenarios that could be had. So I would like to think that congressmen will stand by their signatures and see the proceedings through," she added.
"As for us prosecutors, we will always stand by our job and we will do our best to prosecute the case. We are here. I said before that we are doing this para sa bayan kaya dapat naming ipagpatuloy ito,' Zamora said.
The House Prosecution Panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will resume their weekly meetings this week in preparation for the trial.
Bayan Muna chairperson Atty. Neri Colmenares, one of the lawyers in one of the complaints in the impeachment, said the president's softer stance sent a dangerous message.
"This sends a dangerous signal that accountability is negotiable under his administration, a betrayal of the people's demand for justice," Colmenares said.
Zamora also said that the impeachment was not a factor in the defeat of several candidates in Eleksyon 2025.
'For me, Mindanao is really the base of the Dutertes. They will always get a lot of support for their candidates, meaning the Duterten candidates. So I would think that it's not surprising if the Alyansa candidates did not get a lot of votes there," Zamora said.
"But I want to make it clear also that support for the impeachment does not mean or did not spell loss for any Alyansa or congressional candidates who supported the impeachment. We saw there were Alyansa candidates who won, there were Liberal candidates who won, and in the congressional race, majority of those who supported the impeachment won as well,' she added.
Zamora said that the House Prosecution Panel will do their best in the impeachment trial even if there is a leadership change in the House of Representatives.
But Zamora added she continues to support House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
'I will always support our Speaker Martin so I don't know about the other names that have been floating around,' Zamora said.
Zamora also mentioned that there is a manifesto of support for Marcos and for Romualdez. —NB, GMA Integrated News

'We are at 90% to 95% done with the preparations for the SONA, and it is still ongoing even amid the inclement weather. The SONA will push through, as we have prepared for, on July 28,' Abante said in a press conference. Asked if a possible weather-related postponement is on the table, she replied, 'We are yet to talk about any postponement of the physical gathering for the SONA.' Likewise, Abante said that the House is expecting to welcome around 1,500 guests this year, or similar to last year's number of attendees. 'Last year was one of the most attended SONAs, if not the most attended, with around 1,500 guests. We expect this year to have more or less the same as last year's figures,' Abante said. Further, Abante said that while the police and the security forces are already all systems go for the SONA next Monday, there is no specific threat that would warrant a heightened alert. In a separate announcement, House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said the House has prepared three viewing rooms in Batasang Pambansa complex for more guests, apart from the plenary hall where the President will deliver his SONA: the Daniel Romualdez Hall for 290 guests; the Ramon Mitra Room for 70; and the Jose de Venecia Hall for 80. — BM, GMA Integrated News

GAB should be posted on House website for transparency — Gatchalian
The General Appropriations Bill (GAB) should be posted on the website of the House of Representatives to allow the public to keep track of the country's annual budget, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said Sunday. Gatchalian made the remark after he was asked if he is in favor of opening the bicameral budget deliberations to the public. 'Dadagdagan ko pa yan. Kung ako, pati 'yung GAB, dapat i-post sa website. Sa ngayon, hindi 'yan kaya bulag ang taumbayan kung ano ang isinusumite ng Kamara sa Senado,' Gatchalian told Super Radyo dzBB. (I would add to that. In my opinion, I think the General Appropriations Bill should be posted on the website. Right now, it's not, which means the public is blind to what the House is submitting to the Senate.) 'Kung ako, dapat ipost yan ng House of Representatives sa website (if it were up to me, the House should post the GAB on its website),' he added. The senator added the Senate's committee report and GAB's third reading version should also be posted online. 'Para makita natin yung takbo at para nasusundan ng taong bayan kung ano yung napapalitan, ano yung nadadagdag at ano yung final version ng GAA (General Appropriations Act),' the solon said. (So that we can see the progress, and so that the public can follow the changes and the final version of the GAA.) Earlier this week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the proposed P6.793 trillion National Expenditure Program (NEP) for Fiscal Year 2026. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said the DBM had to trim down requests for budget proposals that reached P10.101 trillion due to limited fiscal space and the fiscal consolidation strategy, which targets gradually reducing the national government's deficit from 5.5% of GDP in 2025 to 4.3% by 2028. — RF, GMA Integrated News

VP Sara not in favor of online gambling
Vice President Sara Duterte on Saturday expressed her opposition to online gambling amid proposals in Congress for a total ban. 'I am against online gambling. Hindi ako sang-ayon sa lahat ng klase ng pagsusugal online dahil hindi nakokontrol ng mga magulang ang access ng kanilang mga anak diyaan sa internet,' Duterte said during an interview at the Free Duterte Now rally in The Hague, Netherlands. (I am against online gambling. I am not in favor of any type of online gambling because parents could not control the access of their children on the internet.) According to the vice president, online gambling makes it easy for Filipinos to lose money and often puts families in debt. 'Okay ako sa regulated gambling kung saan di lahat nakakasugal, pero kapag nilagay mo siya online kung na hindi na natin macocontrol kung sino makakapagbukas ng account para magsugal, di ako sang-ayon doon dahil nakakasira ng pamilya yun at nakakasira ng kinabukasan ng kabataan,' she added. (I am okay with regulated gambling where not anyone can gamble, but if you place it online where we can no longer control who can open an account to gamble, I am not in favor of that, as it destroys families and it destroys the futures of the youth.) Several lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives have backed proposals seeking an outright ban on online gambling as they believed regulation would not be enough. The Department of Health also said that online gambling is a health issue that can affect a person's capacity to perform his or her job or can even cause harm. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
