Cocaine Investigation Uncovers Largest Ever LSD Seizure
A joint drug importation investigation has intercepted a record-breaking quantity of LSD brought into New Zealand.
Under Operation Spin, New Zealand Police and New Zealand Customs have been investigating the importation and supply of Class A controlled drugs from the United States into New Zealand.
Four search warrants were carried out in the Auckland region by the National Organised Crime Group last week.
Detective Senior Sergeant Reece Sirl says the operation located 40,800 LSD tabs, with a street value totalling more than a million dollars.
'According to Police records, this seizure is the largest quantity of LSD for New Zealand located in possession of a single individual,' he says.
'LSD is a potent psychoactive substance, and large quantities such as this are rarely encountered these days in New Zealand.'
Most recently, the largest seizure of LSD in New Zealand was in March 2023 with 10,029 seized by Customs. Prior to that, in 2000, Police seized two separate hauls of 14,000 tabs each.
'This is a pleasing result for the Operation Spin team,' says Detective Senior Sergeant Sirl.
A 30-year-old man has been charged with offences relating to the importation, possession and supply of cocaine and the possession for supply of LSD, while a 25-year-old male has been charged with importing cocaine.
Both men remain before the Waitākere District Court.
NOCG continues to work closely with domestic and international partners to identify and dismantle criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and distribution.
'Our focus as always is to continue targeting those that illegally accumulate cash and assets through the sale of illegal drugs,' Detective Senior Sergeant Sirl says.
'This seizure is another example of the work being carried out to make New Zealand more resilient to transnational organised crime.'
Enquiries into the drug offending will continue with Police expecting more charges to follow as further individuals are identified as being involved.

Man followed off bus by teens, beaten and robbed for watch in Auckland
The New Lynn station. Photo: Google Maps A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a violent robbery at an Auckland train station on Tuesday night. Police say a man was followed off a bus arriving at the New Lynn train station by a group of young people. It's alleged two of the group assaulted him and took the watch he was wearing, then fled on foot. The victim was taken to hospital but didn't have any serious injuries. Detective Senior Sergeant Josh Lautogo, from Waitematā CIB, said a police dog was brought in to try to track the group. "This was a cowardly assault and the violent behaviour exhibited last night will not be tolerated," he said. "Ambulance transported the victim to Waitākere Hospital for observations, but he did not suffer serious physical injuries." A 16-year-old has been arrested and police are still trying to find a second person. Anyone with information is asked to call 105, using the reference number 250806/9635.

Police still concerned over powerline tampering in Christchurch
Photo: Police are renewing an appeal for information as powerline tampering and theft continue across Christchurch. Numerous reports of tampering in recent years had cost lines companies dearly , plunged homes into darkness and seen offenders before the court . Acting Detective Sergeant Steph Trengrove of the Christchurch Tactical Crime Unit said the thefts could disrupt essential services, and came with serious safety risks. She said there was a high chance of serious injury or death from the thefts, which can lead to power outages and leave powerlines exposed. "While nobody has been seriously injured while attempting to steal the copper from these lines yet, there is a very high chance that serious injury or death will occur if this activity continues," she said. Detective Sergeant Trengrove appealed to residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious or unusual activity or sounds, and let police know if they had any information that could identify the culprits. Some of the key areas were: McLeans Island, West Melton, Dallington, Avondale, Brooklands and Spencerville. "Members of the public should also be aware of the dangers behind exposed or damaged wires. Please do not touch any exposed wires, and call Orion on 0800 363 9898 immediately." Residents should call 111 if they saw any suspicious activity around power poles and lines, or 105 if it was after the fact. Man's death in Auckland park treated as unexplained
Photo: The death of a man found in a park Sir Woolf Fisher Park in Mt Wellington is being treated as unexplained. Police said they were called to a hardware shop on Ellerslie-Panmure Highway about 1.30am on Wednesday after an alarm went off. "Police units arrived on scene and established cordons around the store," Detective Senior Sergeant Anthony Darvill said. Crew in the Eagle helicopter spotted a man lying in the grounds of nearby Sir Woolf Fisher Park, he said. "It appeared the man was not responsive, and units were directed to his location commencing first aid on him," he said. However the man was confirmed to have died. Police are investigating whether he was involved in the burglary. "We are treating the man's death as unexplained at this very early stage, and expect a post mortem examination to be carried out today," Darvill said. Police are also looking for one other person in relation to the burglary. A scene examination was being completed at the reserve, which backs off Barrack Road.
