NWU set to host Purple Con

The Citizen21-04-2025
The North-West University's (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus is set to host Purple Con, a vibrant celebration of anime, gaming and pop culture inspired by the renowned Comic-Con.
Organised by the NWU Anime Student Society in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and the Sports department, this one-day convention will take place on July 26.
The convention aims to bring together students and the broader community, fostering an engaging and inclusive environment. 'Our goal with Purple Con is to create a space where creativity flourishes and cultural appreciation takes centre stage. We believe in bringing people together through a shared love for anime and gaming,' says Sibusiso Hlongwane, a representative of the Anime Student Society.
The society has been dedicated to building a vibrant community where individuals with shared interests in anime, gaming and pop culture can celebrate their passions. Since its establishment in 2023, the Anime Student Society has expanded across campuses, recently winning the award for Best Newly Affiliated Society in 2024. They have participated in numerous events, including Comic-Con at the Nasrec Centre, thus proudly embracing their identity as OTAKU.
To raise funds for Purple Con, the society embarked on a fundraising initiative by doing shifts at RocoMamas.
'Through our Shadow Shifts at RocoMamas, we managed to raise a total of R3 146.90 from 10% of the shifts' turnover,' says Sibusiso.
They also held various fundraising events, including a Game Night, which brought in enthusiastic crowds.
Attendees can look forward to a diverse range of activities at Purple Con, reflecting modern anime culture. These will include thrilling gaming tournaments featuring popular titles like FC25, Street Fighter, Tekken and Apex Legends. For those seeking adventure, there will be opportunities for virtual reality experiences, paintball in a military-themed forest setup, and even four-wheel go-karting.
Notably, the convention aims to involve local talent and businesses.
'We are excited to showcase both well-known brands and student-run businesses. It is important for us to provide a platform for young entrepreneurs to thrive,' says Sibusiso.
While specific guests like as voice actors and anime creators, have not been confirmed, invitations have been sent to e-sports teams from various institutions, including the University of Pretoria and Wits University.
Sibusiso says participation is open to everyone. 'Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere filled with gaming competitions, vendor stalls, performances and more. While general admission fees are yet to be announced, the society plans to offer promotions for free tickets, making the convention accessible to all.'
'We hope to deepen the engagement of the local anime community and position the NWU as a leader in inclusive, youth-centred events. We want everyone, regardless of age or background, to feel welcome at Purple Con. It is about celebrating what we love in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation.'

Pedro Pascal's affectionate nature sparks debate during 'Fantastic Four' press tour

Pedro Pascal uses touch to deal with his anxiety during appearances. Image: X / buffypascal Pedro Pascal has been popping up everywhere lately, and it's not just because he's everyone's favourite 'daddy.' During the press tour for his new movie, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, videos of Pascal getting cosy with his co-star Vanessa Kirby, who plays the Invisible Woman, have gone viral. In the clips, the two are seen holding hands, leaning into one another, and even gently rubbing arms. To some, it looks like there might be a romantic spark between them. 🔥🚨DEVELOPING: Hollywood actor Pedro Pascal is being met with 'cheating' allegations after fans began noticing how he interacts with his married co-star Vanessa Kirby during Fantastic Four interviews. — Dom Lucre | Breaker of Narratives (@dom_lucre) July 24, 2025 But that's not the case at all. In fact, Pascal has been quite open about why he acts this way. He's previously spoken about his struggles with anxiety, especially in high-pressure situations like public events and interviews. Pedro Pascal has found a simple way to manage his anxiety. — WeGotitBack 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@NotFarLeftAtAll) July 25, 2025 For him, physical touch is a way to stay grounded. He's mentioned how being close to someone, or even placing a hand on his own chest, helps manage those anxious feelings. Kirby has also addressed the clips, confirming that both of them were nervous during some of these big events. 'He does have anxiety, and he's been open about it,' Kirby said at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. 'But the way he holds your hand or anchors you? That's him being protective, not anxious.' If you watch closely, you'll notice she often reciprocates the closeness, too. Many fans find Pascal's affectionate nature charming and admire his openness about mental health. They point out that Kirby clearly isn't uncomfortable, and in an industry where co-stars often spend long hours together, a close, platonic bond isn't unusual. Others, however, feel the level of physical contact crosses a line. Words like 'creepy' and 'inappropriate' have popped up online, especially amid ongoing conversations around consent and professional boundaries. Some have also questioned why this kind of 'anxiety touching' seems to happen more frequently with female co-stars. me wondering why Pedro Pascal never has 'anxiety' around his male co-workers — duck (@ExtremeBlitz__) July 23, 2025 Then there's a third camp of people suggesting that the backlash is part of a coordinated smear campaign. Pascal, a vocal supporter of transgender rights, has been outspoken against anti-trans views, which has prompted theories that certain groups are trying to discredit him and sway public opinion. The Pedro Pascal hate campaign that suddenly sprung up over night has got to be the most obviously coordinated and botted attack I've ever seen. It's literally the Superman monkey meme incarnate — Mischief (@MischiefsYT) July 24, 2025 Whatever the reason, I'm just happy to see more of Pedro Pascal on my feed, even if it's just for his impeccable style. Labubu fans dote over ugly-cute doll trending at Comic-Con

San Diego Comic-Con is the latest location where the ugly-cute dolls named Labubu have been trending, with fans carrying the plushies globally popularised by celebrities Rihanna, Lizzo, Dua Lipa and Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink. The wide-eyed and grinning doll was created in 2015 by Hong Kong artist and illustrator Kasing Lung. In 2019, Lung allowed them to be sold by Pop Mart, a Chinese toy company that sells collectible figurines, often in 'blind boxes'. 'Blind boxes' are sealed boxes containing a surprise item that is usually part of a themed collection. Naomi Galban from San Diego waited in line on Sunday at the Pop Mart booth in the San Diego Convention Center for a chance to get her first Labubu. 'Every time I go to a Pop Mart store, they're sold out,' the 24-year-old said. She hoped to buy one for her little sister. Emily Brough, Pop Mart's Head of IP Licensing, spoke to Reuters on Thursday about Labubu fans at Comic-Con. 'We love to see how fans are personalising it [Labubu] for themselves,' Brough said next to the Pop Mart booth. While Brough noted that there were many people with a Labubu strapped to their bags and backpacks at Comic-Con, the doll's popularity did not happen overnight. Labubus had a huge boost in 2019 after Pop Mart began selling them, and in 2024, when Blackpink's Lisa, who is Thai, created a buying frenzy in Thailand after she promoted Labubu on social media.
