Emirates Development Bank explores industrial development prospects with strategic partners

Zawya15-05-2025
Emirates Development Bank (EDB), the UAE's key financial engine for economic diversification and industrial transformation, concluded the latest edition of its flagship forum, EDB Connect, in Abu Dhabi, which brought together public and private sector leaders to explore the future of mission-critical industries and the role of innovation, policy, and financing in building a resilient, self-sufficient economy.
Held under the theme of 'Strengthening Mission-Critical Manufacturing: Building a Resilient and Sustainable UAE', the latest edition of the event series, the second to be held in Abu Dhabi, marked a critical milestone in the national lead-up to the UAE's flagship industrial event Make it in the Emirates, which will be held later this month.
Organised in close collaboration with the 'Make it in the Emirates' initiative by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), EDB Connect convened senior policymakers, industrialists, innovators, and financial partners to accelerate the UAE's industrial agenda.
Ahmed Mohamed Al Naqbi, CEO of Emirates Development Bank, said, 'This year's edition of EDB Connect in Abu Dhabi reflects our firm belief that the UAE's industrial future will be built through collective action — through partners, policymakers, and pioneers all working in alignment, As the countdown to Make it in the Emirates begins, today's dialogue highlights how innovation and collaboration are essential to delivering the future of UAE manufacturing."
Throughout the day at EDB Connect in Abu Dhabi, panel discussions explored the role of frontier technologies in industrial development, including the practical applications of AI and robotics across the Bank's priority sectors: renewables, advanced technology, manufacturing, food security, and healthcare. To complement this momentum, the agenda featured keynote addresses led by Osama Amir Fadhel, Assistant Undersecretary for the Industrial Accelerator Sector at the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Marwa Al Mansoori, Board Member at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Additional sessions brought together Maria Hanif Al-Qassim, Assistant Undersecretary for Policies and Economic Studies at the Ministry of Economy, alongside senior experts from the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, Ministry of Economy, ADNOC, Dubai Industrial City, Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park, KEZAD Group, ADIO, First Abu Dhabi Bank, and Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zones, who shared insights on unlocking industrial innovation, financing strategies, and strengthening public-private partnerships.
A special panel on innovation ecosystems brought together senior leaders to discuss how to embed innovation across sectors, while another session on strategic partnerships explored the evolving role of co-financing, export credit, and patient capital in supporting SME competitiveness and long-term industrial value creation.
As part of this digital-first strategy, EDB also highlighted the continued success of its EDB 360 platform — a no-fee, no-minimum-balance digital banking solution that enables fast onboarding, fintech-powered lending, and ecosystem access for entrepreneurs and SMEs.

Sharjah Chamber reports 12% membership growth in H1 2025

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) recorded a strong performance and significant growth across key metrics during the first half of 2025, reporting more than 37,000 new memberships and membership renewals, marking a growth of over 12 percent compared to the same period in 2024, which registered 33,000 memberships. The combined export and re-export values of registered member companies reached approximately AED11 billion in the first half of 2025, as reported by SCCI. The Chamber also issued 41,294 certificates of origin during the same period, marking a 6 percent increase compared to the previous year. This reflects SCCI's leading efforts to support the business and investment environment in the emirate of Sharjah. SCCI's certificates of origin for H1 2025 showed that Saudi Arabia topped the list of importers from Sharjah, with export and re-export values exceeding AED5.9 billion, reinforcing strong bilateral trade ties and Sharjah's position as a key supplier to Gulf markets. Oman ranked second with more than AED 1.6 billion, followed by Iraq with over AED 1.5 billion. Other prominent export destinations included Qatar, the United Kingdom, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kuwait, and India. In his remarks, Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of SCCI, stated that the surge in memberships during the first half of 2025 is a testament to the growing investor confidence in Sharjah's business ecosystem. He emphasised that the emirate's favorable investment environment and its array of competitive advantages and incentives have positioned Sharjah as a major business hub and investment destination. For his part, Mohammed Ahmed Amin Al Awadi, Director-General of SCCI, noted that the Chamber's strong performance in H1 2025 reflects the effective rollout of its 2025–2027 strategic plan. The strategy focuses on Sharjah's economic empowerment, entrepreneurial development, private sector competitiveness, and the creation of a growth-oriented investment climate. During the first half of this year, the Sharjah Chamber remained committed to diversifying its initiatives and launching strategic economic and trade events, programs, and exhibitions aimed at advancing the emirate's ongoing economic development. The Chamber engaged in a series of business meetings with official, diplomatic, and trade delegations to foster strategic partnerships between Sharjah's private sector and global counterparts. It also facilitated targeted discussions with sectoral business groups and key entrepreneurs. As part of its efforts to expand international cooperation and open new market opportunities for Sharjah's business community, the Sharjah Chamber organized two successful trade missions to India and Mauritius the first half of 2025. These missions featured high-level meetings with government representatives, entrepreneurs, and investors to foster cross-border business engagement.

Spotify to raise premium subscription price in select markets from September

Spotify said on Monday it would increase monthly price of its premium individual subscription in select markets from September, as the Swedish streaming giant looks to improve margins. The company's shares jumped nearly 8%. They have gained about 40% so far this year. The subscription price will rise to 11.99 euros ($13.86) per month from 10.99 euros in markets including South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region. Spotify said subscribers will receive an email explaining the price rise over the next month. Price increases in the past, combined with cost-cutting efforts in recent years, have helped it to achieve its first annual profit for 2024. The company saw an increase in monthly active users and premium subscribers during the second quarter, while higher taxes related to employee salaries led it to post a loss during the period and weighed on its third-quarter profit forecast. Spotify has been expanding its library of video content to attract subscribers, including through its partner program, which is designed to help podcast creators by offering them monetization options. A growing number of creators are joining the Spotify Partner Program, resulting in a significant increase in video content on the platform, CEO Daniel Ek had earlier told Reuters. The streaming company is also benefiting from Apple's approval of its U.S. app update to show subscription prices and external payment links, after a judge barred the iPhone maker from charging commission on off-app purchases. Ek said this change has led to "a very positive uptick" in the U.S. If similar rules are adopted in Europe and the UK, it would benefit both Spotify and other app developers.
