Spain take lead on day one of SailGP in New York
Defending series champions Spain, who won the San Francisco event in March, made it look easy despite light winds and strong tides as they took the first win of the day.
Competing against one of the most famous skylines in the world on the iconic Hudson River, they sailed away from the fleet and led at mark one before sealing a 14-second lead over second New Zealand on the finish line.
After a brilliant opening performance, Spain were off to a turbulent start in the second race but finished fourth, moving up from their last 12th position at the start line.
They started at the back once again in the third and last fleet race of the day but moved themselves up into the third to lead overnight on 25 points before day two of the event on Sunday.
Spain, led by Olympic champion driver Botin, are five points ahead of second-placed Denmark and France in third.
Australia and Brazil were going head to head in the second race before Tom Slingsby's team, now rebranded as the BONDS Flying Roos after new celebrity co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds were announced on Thursday, took the win.
New Zealand, winners in New York last year, won the third race but 11th spot in the second saw them finish fourth for the day.
The race was brought forward due to a storm forecast later in the day, and started two and a half hours earlier than originally scheduled.
The global racing championship is back into action after a wingsail defect forced a brief hiatus with the cancellation of May's Rio event.

August 4 - The Miami Dolphins endured a rough few days on the practice field as they ramp up for their preseason opener next week. Right tackle Austin Jackson sustained a lower leg injury on Friday, knocking him out for a matter of weeks, and fullback Alec Ingold wound up in concussion protocol after getting hurt in practice on Sunday. Jackson missed more than half of the 2024 season due to a knee injury, but coach Mike McDaniel emphasized on Sunday that the latest ailment is unrelated. "He got the (new) injury playing football and got stepped on. It has nothing to do with anything but that," McDaniel said Sunday. "And with Austin, the bottom line for me where he's at ... he knocked some rust off, he got back and, in my opinion, exceeded where he was playing before. So we're fortunate that that timetable (for his absence) doesn't seem to be into the regular season." Jackson, 25, has started 54 of his 56 NFL games for the Dolphins since they selected him with the 18th overall pick in the 2020 draft out of Southern California. The Dolphins added to their offensive line depth on Sunday by signing Germain Ifedi. A first-round pick of Seattle in 2016, he has played for the Seahawks (2016-19), the Chicago Bears (2020-21), the Atlanta Falcons (2022) and the Cleveland Browns (2024). Last year, he appeared in 15 games and made five starts. Ingold, 29, played three seasons with the Raiders before spending the past three years in Miami, including a Pro Bowl season in 2023. Last year, he had 10 carries for 17 yards and a touchdown to go with 11 receptions for 96 yards. Miami's exhibition opener is at Chicago on Aug. 10. Bruno Fernandes criticised Manchester United for being 'lazy' in their draw with Everton in Atlanta, and claimed that it underlined the need for the club to bring in more new signings this summer. United ended their US tour by winning the Premier League Summer Series and remaining unbeaten in pre-season, but were twice pegged back at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Although Fernandes scored from the penalty spot and got an assist for Mason Mount 's second goal to take away the man-of-the-match award, the United captain was unhappy with the team's display in Georgia. 'Our performance wasn't the best off the ball,' he said. 'We were a little bit lazy and we have to avoid that because the laziness you can pay at any moment. 'It's improving. It's not where we want it to be. I don't want to have a dig at anyone, but I think the club is doing the best they can in terms of all the financial situations they talk about. 'I don't know about it, I'm not involved in that. But obviously it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more, to have to do more to get into the starting XI. I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do, and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that. 'Every small detail matters. At this football club you can't do anything wrong on the pitch and off the pitch because it's too big worldwide and you get punished by that. 'You get the attention of the media and your fans and you have to be aware of that. At this club the culture here was winning and we need to bring that back. Not only the winning mentality that we need, and I think that's always been there, but obviously if you don't win you don't show it. 'The club is trying to improve other things. The facilities have improved, we tried to improve the team, the staff, a lot of things. 'A lot of people have suffered from this, a lot of people who had been working at the club for many many years had to go. The fans are paying more for tickets, and we appreciate all the effort they put in for us, so now it's up to us to pay it back on the pitch.'
