Boks score big — and so do Nelson Mandela Bay businesses

Daily Maverick4 days ago
Gqeberha's hospitality scene came alive this past weekend as the Springboks delivered a 45-0 win over Italy — and a major win for local bars, restaurants and fan parks. From packed beachfront joints to shuttle services ferrying fans, it was the Bay's biggest sporting boost since the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
Beyond the 45-0 drubbing of the Italians at the NMB Stadium on Saturday, the Springboks brought a week of gees, good vibes and a major cash injection for the local hospitality industry.
Some of the Bay's most popular establishments said they had not seen this kind of support for a sporting event since the 2010 Fifa World Cup, and bookings were made weeks in advance to secure seats in front of the big screens.
Some rugby fans might have enjoyed the gees a little too much. At least 12 rugby fans had a less than ideal weekend after they were arrested for drunk driving when leaving the stadium on Saturday night.
Business bonanza
Barney's Tavern, a beachfront institution in Gqeberha, had a bumper weekend, with the first fans arriving from as early as 8am on Saturday.
Owner Craig Mittens said the rugby season was crucial for business in the winter months, and while they expected good support, this past weekend had been exceptional.
'I don't think we've seen this kind of business since the 2010 World Cup. We had guys flying into Gqeberha stopping by for breakfast at 8am, and the last customers walked out of here after 1am on Sunday.
'And at 8am on Sunday, we were almost packed again as guys stopped by for breakfast before catching their flights back home. It was crazy.'
Mittens and his team ran a shuttle service that transported 120 people between Barney's and the stadium before and after the game.
While he still needs to crunch the numbers to determine exactly how good business was on Saturday, Mittens said he would not be surprised if they reached record-setting figures.
In Good Company, a hospitality collective based in Gqeberha, also believed they reached record numbers as their establishments showed an increase in activity for the entire week leading up to the Springbok-Italy clash.
'We had bookings coming in for the rugby about a month in advance, and even our stores not showing the rugby were packed. It just goes to show the ripple effect that an event like a Springbok game can have on business,' operations manager Anle Marais said.
With one of its beachfront restaurants, Something Good, only a stone's throw from the Springboks' hotel, Marais said they had fans coming and going the whole week as Siya Kolisi and his teammates frequented the establishment.
Bridge Street Brewery collaborated with Castle Lager as an official fan park and was bursting at the seams until closing time at 2am.
Meanwhile, despite not even having TVs, business at Hello! Beach and Hello! It's Me Walmer was also booming.
'Some people came for a bite before going to watch the game, while we definitely saw some wives come out while their husbands were at the rugby. The knock-on effect of these big events is immeasurable,' Marais noted.
Safety and security
Director of Traffic and Licensing in Nelson Mandela Bay, Warren Prins, applauded establishments that offered shuttle services to and from the stadium as it helped to reduce the number of inebriated drivers.
'From the Metro Police, we had upwards of 40 officers manning 22 points around the stadium before, during and after the game. We also had officials at the event to help other law-enforcement agencies to monitor and manage the crowd.'
Prins said besides a handful of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, the event was a major success from a safety and security point of view.
'No major incidents, especially violent incidents, were reported to us, and we arrested 12 people for driving under the influence after the match. Overall, I believe the crowds were generally well-behaved and we saw little need for serious intervention,' Prins said. DM

Rankings: Springboks' top spot coming under threat

Jesse Kriel and the Springboks in a huddle. Image: SA Rugby website The Springboks face Georgia this Saturday, but can't improve their rankings rating this weekend due to the 18.09-point gap between themselves and their 11th-ranked opponents before home advantage is factored in. This means that their cushion at the top could be cut to only 0.55 rating points over New Zealand if the All Blacks complete a series whitewash of France with a win by more than 15 points on Saturday. Last weekend, the All Blacks claimed a resounding 43-17 over a weakened France team, and so there is every expectation that another comfortable victory could be on the cards in Hamilton. Other permutations to note for this weekend's fixtures: If Georgia can create history and avoid defeat against South Africa for the first time then New Zealand need a smaller margin of victory to replace South Africa at the summit. The All Blacks have not been ranked number one in the world since November 2021. With Ireland not in action this weekend, France have an opportunity to improve on fourth place, although to leapfrog both Ireland and New Zealand they must beat the All Blacks by more than 15 points. If that happens, the All Blacks will find themselves down in fourth. England, in fifth, cannot improve their rating with victory over USA, given the 19.19 point difference between the teams before home weighting is factored in. The good news is that a defeat will not cost them a position, as Australia face the British and Irish Lions in the first test – which does not count towards the rankings – and Argentina cannot gain any points for beating Uruguay. Scotland can only gain a maximum of 0.20 rating points for beating Samoa at Eden Park, not enough to catch Los Pumas even if they are beaten by Uruguay. Even though Fiji and Italy above them are not in action, Georgia cannot enter the top 10 for the first time even if they beat South Africa by more than 15 points as they will be 0.08 rating points short. However, if Scotland lose then Fiji will climb one place to eighth. Samoa will gain one place if they beat Scotland, replacing Wales in 12th but cannot catch Georgia. Japan, who occupy 14th place, cannot be caught by any of their nearest rivals – Spain, USA and Uruguay – as they hold too big a cushion. 1 South Africa 92.78 2 New Zealand 91.72 3 Ireland 89.83 4 France 88.16 5 England 87.64 6 Australia 82.08 7 Argentina 82.05 8 Scotland 81.37 9 Fiji 80.50 10 Italy 77.77 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Springbok Wiese banned for four matches over head butt

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa No 8 Jasper Wiese has been banned for four matches after head-butting Italy prop Danilo Fischetti in last weekend's Test victory in Gqeberha, World Rugby announced on Tuesday. The 29-year-old back-rower will miss a one-off Test against Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday and three Rugby Championship matches - two at home to Australia and one against New Zealand in Auckland. Wiese will be available for selection when the Springboks face the All Blacks in Wellington on 13 September, seven days after the first meeting between the sides. South Africa then face Argentina twice to complete their Rugby Championship schedule. They meet France, Italy, Ireland and Wales during a November tour to Europe. Wiese was red-carded after 22 minutes of the first half in the second Test against Italy when South Africa were leading by 10 points. The Rugby World Cup title-holders went to win Saturday's game 45-0. His place in the team to face Georgia this weekend will be taken by his younger brother, Cobus Wiese, who made his Test debut last Saturday. Jasper Wiese played for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein and Leicester Tigers before joining Japanese outfit Urayasu D-Rocks last year.

Springboks pick dynamic half-backs for final Championship warm-up

JOHANNESBURG - Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Grant Williams can form a dynamic half-back partnership for South Africa when they complete their Rugby Championship build-up by tackling Georgia in Mbombela on Saturday. Head coach Rassie Erasmus has chosen 46 players for four warm-up matches, with the first three against Italy (twice) and the Barbarians delivering a hat-trick of victories, 87 points and 21 tries. The record four-time Rugby World Cup winners have notched 86 points in two previous wins over the Georgians and another convincing victory is anticipated in the one-off Test. South Africa begin their defence of the Rugby Championship with two home matches in August against Australia. They then face arch rivals New Zealand twice on the road and Argentina at home and away. Erasmus has rung the changes as he seeks greater Springbok depth, making five changes to the team after the BaaBaas match, 11 after the first Italy Test and 10 after the second. "We never drop somebody in our team, we rotate," he told reporters ahead of the match at a 43,500-seat stadium in northeast South Africa built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. READ: Springbok Wiese banned for four matches over head butt The pairing of fly-half Feinberg-Mngomezulu and scrum-half Williams for the first time this season has triggered excitement as both are dynamic with ball in hand. If the duo click, second-tier Georgia could face a challenging evening as the evolution of the Springboks continues with less reliance on the once favoured kick-and-chase approach. Competition for the number 10 shirt is intense with Erasmus also starting famed goal-kicker Handre Pollard and creative Manie Libbok this season. There are even more scrum-half candidates, including Williams, Faf de Klerk, Cobus Reinach, recent addition Morne van den Berg and currently out-of-favour Jaden Hendricks. Erasmus craves versatility and what boosts Williams is his ability to also perform as a winger, which he did occasionally during the triumphant 2023 World Cup campaign in France. - ADAPTABLE - Williams is far from alone in being adaptable in a team where inside centre Andre Esterhuizen was labelled a "hybrid player" by Erasmus after being deployed as a flanker against the Barbarians. "Jesse (Kriel) can move from centre to the wing, Handre can move to centre, Sacha can move to centre or full-back," said the head coach. "Take outside centre -- we have Jesse, Canan (Moodie), Ethan (Hooker), and Lukhanyo (Am) is set to return from injury. We want fierce competition for places ahead of the 2027 World Cup in Australia." Georgia arrived in South Africa after suffering a 34-5 loss in Tbilisi to Ireland, who were lacking many stars on British and Irish Lions duty in Australia, but Erasmus is not underestimating the Lelos. "We know how passionate this Georgian side is and we have chosen a blend of youth and experience to face them. "Georgia are tough and proud of their physicality and brute force in the collisions. The set pieces, mauls and breakdowns will be key areas. "They also have quality backline players so we must be sharp in all departments of our game to get the desired result and build momentum for the Rugby Championship," added Erasmus. Georgia coach and former England hooker Richard Cockerill said he did not want the Test to become "a training session" for the Springboks. "We cannot be timid. The only way for us to compete is to roll our sleeves up, stick our gumshields in and get stuck in," he added. Cockerill has made one change to the team that started against Ireland with number 8 Ilia Spanderashvili replacing Tbilisi Test try scorer Tornike Jalagonia, who moves to the bench.
