Former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer advised Rishabh Pant to save risky shots for the IPL and show more discipline in Tests.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer has asked the men's Test incumbent, Rishabh Pant, to save his unorthodox, risky shots for the Indian Premier League. Engineer gave his green light for Pant to play as a specialist batter in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester due to his finger injury, but said he'll need to show much more discipline.
Pant picked up a blow to his index finger while wicketkeeping in the third Test at Lord's. He didn't look entirely comfortable while batting but managed to score a half-century in the first innings, before falling victim to Jofra Archer's jaffa in the second. India lost the Test and are trailing the series 2-1. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had confirmed that even if Pant can't keep wickets in Manchester, he'll play as a specialist batter.
'Absolutely. Save those (risky shots) for IPL," Engineer told RevSportz. 'Test cricket demands discipline. From a number three or four, you expect them to play proper cricket, get big scores, and build innings. Rishabh has scored centuries in both innings of a Test, which is remarkable. So yes, he could play purely as a batsman, especially with England's strong bowling lineup, now including Jofra Archer and Atkinson," he added.
Interestingly, Engineer himself was considered too flamboyant for his time. He revealed that he spoke to Pant about his shot selection as well but got the typical response.
'For the runs he's scored, yes, he can play as a pure batter. But Rishabh is unpredictable. Whatever comes to his mind, he does it. I joked with him about his shot selection, and he just laughed—said he does what feels right in the moment. He has the confidence and has gotten away with it often. But he needs to be more responsible in crucial moments, like right before lunch or at the end of a day's play. Still, he's immensely talented. He invents his own shots, and thankfully, helmets allow that now. In our time, we wouldn't have had any teeth left," Engineer added.
If Pant is picked as a specialist batter, India will still need a wicketkeeper in the 11. Dhruv Jurel is the backup option available in the squad and could come in for one of the all-rounders or top-order batters.

4th Test: Duckett and Crawley take England to a rapid 77/0, trail India by 281 runs

Manchester: Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got England off to a flying start as the hosts' reached a rapid 77/0 in 14 overs and trail India by 281 runs at tea on day two of fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford on Thursday. Skipper Ben Stokes previously led the way for England with 5-72 as they bowled out India for 358 in 114.1 overs. For India, vice-captain Rishabh Pant astonishing everyone by coming out to bat despite a fractured fifth metatarsal in the right foot, hit a brave 54 off 75 balls – a knock which will be talked for ages to come. Questions were around how the Indian bowlers would make use of bowler-friendly conditions, but Crawley and Duckett, unbeaten on 33 and 46 respectively, came out all guns blazing by feasting on the inconsistent lines and lengths from the tourists' bowling line-up. Duckett laid the platform for England by hitting four boundaries off debutant Anshul Kamboj, before glancing Jasprit Bumrah for three boundaries. While Duckett has feasted on anything on his legs, Crawley took a liking to Mohammed Siraj's freebies and hit three boundaries. The duo would take a four each off Siraj and Kamboj to ensure England hit a great punch till tea break came. Previously, Pant, who retired hurt on 37 after the painful blow to the foot on day one, added 17 more runs to India's total and that meant they managed to cross 350-run mark. The second session began with Washington Sundar getting a healthy edge off Stokes for four, before he hooked a short ball from Chris Woakes to deep fine leg and fall for 27 off 90 balls. Stokes completed his first five-wicket haul in eight years when his outswinger took an edge of Kamboj's bat and was caught safely by Jamie Smith. Pant finally got the timing right when he nailed a pull off Archer for six and reached his 18th Test fifty in 69 balls by reaching out to Stokes' wide ball and sent it cracking through cover for four. But for the second consecutive time, Archer sent Pant's off-stump on a cartwheel ride, as hit gutsy knock came to an end at 54 off 75 balls and received rousing reception from the spectators. Siraj and Bumrah hanged around to hit a boundary each, before the latter swung a leg-side delivery off Archer and the ball was caught by Smith. After Root persuaded to go for a review, that proved to be a shrewd move as a nick was detected and resulted in India's innings coming to an end, with Archer taking 3-75. Brief Scores: India 358 in 114.1 overs (B Sai Sudharsan 61, Yashasvi Jaiswal 58; Ben Stokes 5-72, Jofra Archer 3-73) lead England 77/0 in 14 overs (Ben Duckett 46 not out, Zak Crawley 33 not out) by 281 runs

Anahat advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 World Junior Championships in Cairo, defeating Egypt's Elkaraksy. The 16-year-old will face Nadien Elhammamy next. India's rising squash sensation Anahat Singh advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 World Junior Championships in Cairo on Thursday after a commanding straight-games victory over Egypt's Malika Elkaraksy. The 16-year-old dispatched Elkaraksy 11-6, 13-11, 11-5 in the quarterfinals, securing herself a guaranteed medal finish at the prestigious tournament. Seeded second in the tournament, Anahat will now face Egypt's Nadien Elhammamy on Friday for a spot in the final. With this win, Anahat remains the only Indian in contention in the women's singles draw, having outlasted her compatriots Anika Dubey, Rudra Singh, Aradhya Porwal, and Navya Sundararajan, all of whom exited in the second round. On the men's side, India's challenge came to an end earlier in the week. Arihant KS, Yusha Nafees, and Aryaveer Dewan were all eliminated in the third round on Tuesday, wrapping up the country's participation in the men's singles category. The Delhi-based teenager made headlines at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she clinched two bronze medals—one in the women's team event and another in mixed doubles. At the time, she became the youngest Indian to win an Asian Games medal at just 15 years, six months, and 16 days—until Sanjana Bathula later surpassed her record. Anahat was also the youngest member of India's contingent at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Rishabh Pant Becomes First Wicketkeeper-Batter In 141 Years To...

In seven innings of four matches played so far in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Rishabh Pant has amassed a total of 479 runs for India. Rishabh Pant, despite suffering a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), which will reportedly keep him out of action for six weeks, came out to bat for India in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test against England in Manchester and scored 54 runs from 75 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered three fours and two sixes and broke multiple batting records. The 54-run knock in the first innings helped Pant take his tally of runs to 479 in the ongoing series. The total of 479 runs is the most by any wicketkeeper-batter in a Test series played on English soil. The previous best was 464 runs by Alec Stewart of England during the 1998 England-South Africa Test series. Most Test runs in a series by a WK in England 479* – Rishabh Pant vs ENG, 2025 464 – Alec Stewart vs SA, 1998 415* – Jamie Smith vs IND, 2025 387 – Jonny Bairstow vs SL, 2016 Apart from that, Pant also broke the Indian record of scoring the most 50+ scores in a Test series by a wicketkeeper-batter. During his playing days, MS Dhoni twice scored four 50+ scores in a series, and Farokh Engineer, who also has a stand named after him at Old Trafford, also crossed the 50-run mark four times during the 1972-73 India-England Test series. 5 – Rishabh Pant vs England, 2025* 4 – Farokh Engineer vs England, 1972/73 4 – MS Dhoni vs Australia, 2008/09 4 – MS Dhoni vs England, 2014 Pant has nine 50+ scores to his credit in red-ball matches played on English soil now which is one more than Dhoni's tally of 8. In addition to breaking three big records as a wicketkeeper-batter, Pant also entered his name in the record books by becoming India's leading run getter in the World Test Championship (WTC). During his playing days, Rohit featured in 40 WTC matches for India and amassed a total of 2716 runs, whereas Pant has 2731 runs to his credit now in 38 WTC matches. The couple of sixes during his 75-ball stay at the crease in the first innings has taken Pant's tally of maximums to 90 in Test cricket, which helps him equal Virender Sehwag's record of most sixes for India in Tests. Sehwag played 103 Tests for India from 2001 to 2013 and hammered 90 maximums. Get latest Cricket news, live score and match results on News18.
