Craters, dust clouds: Why ride on office hub's roads is a pain

Time of India27-04-2025

Gurgaon: Commuters in Udyog Vihar face daily challenges navigating through broken roads, dust and uneven surfaces. The industrial hub's internal roads, particularly from phases 1 to 5, are riddled with deep potholes, affecting thousands of office-goers and factory workers.
Heavy truck movement has exacerbated the damage, raising concerns about worsening conditions during the coming monsoon, yet repair work has not been carried out.
"It is impossible to drive here without damaging the car. The roads were bad last year too, but now they are non-motorable," said Ashwini Maurya, who works as a supervisor in a textile company in Phase 2.
Apoorv Agrawal, who works in Phase 4, said, "I travel from Sector 30 every day, and the moment I enter Udyog Vihar, the bumpy ride starts. Vehicles slow down as they try to evade potholes. Some of the streets are not even properly lit. As a result, it becomes difficult to see the potholes, especially at night."

Industrialists said that repeated assurances from authorities to address the issue have not resulted in concrete action. Udyog Vihar is home to over 2,500 factories and office complexes, including units from the IT & ITeS, textile, automobile and pharmaceutical sectors across five phases.
Basic infrastructure has not been prioritised, they said
Parveen Yadav, president of the Gurgaon Udyog Association, said they have been raising the issue for the last two years. "Udyog Vihar contributes substantial revenue to the govt., yet essential infrastructure like roads is missing. We have raised this concern several times, but only patchwork repairs are carried out. Some roads are beyond patchwork repair and need recarpeting. Authorities need to take up the issue urgently, but no compromise should be made on quality," he said.
An official from the
Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation
(HSIIDC) said the matter is being addressed. "We initiated the tendering process last year but got delayed due to the imposition of the model code of conduct. Now, the tendering process for recarpeting of roads from phases 1 to 5 has been completed. We are in the final stages of allotting the work, and work is expected to start soon," said Arun Garg, deputy general manager of HSIIDC.

AI for India summit: Experts call for stronger R&D from academia and industry; AI adoption growing across sectors

Photo credit- ANI The need to scale up research and development (R&D) across Indian academia and industry was a recurring theme at the 'AI for India' summit in Bengaluru, where leading voices in artificial intelligence stressed the urgency of cross-sectoral collaboration to make AI work at scale in India. 'This is an opportunity. R&D must step up, and this effort needs to be implemented across the industry and in academia,' said Ganesh Ramakrishnan, Professor at IIT Bombay, during a fireside chat, according to ANI. He emphasised that while industries do face challenges in adapting to disruptive changes like AI, the responsibility to scale innovation lies with both industry and academic institutions. Rishikesha Krishnan, Director of IIM Bangalore, highlighted a shift already visible in placement processes. 'This year itself, in our placement interviews, we found companies asking prospective candidates: if you have to make a digital marketing plan for the company, how will you use AI tools to do it more effectively?' he said. He added that the institute is focusing on 'co-creation,' where 'the human being and the AI work together,' rather than simply relying on generative AI tools. In a separate panel, Gourav Gupta of TVS Motors shared that the company is deploying AI across a range of functions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Veja as oitenta mulheres mais lindas do Brasil Gloriousa Undo 'Our AI is being utilised in manufacturing efficiencies, equipment efficiencies, predictive maintenance, safety, and other areas,' he said. Gupta noted that TVS is also actively working with conversational and voice AI tools for customer service, sentiment analysis, and marketing campaigns, including a fully AI-generated ad campaign, ANI reported. 'We're using GenAI content that is very specific to consumers,' he said, underlining the potential for hyper-personalisation. On internal operations, Gupta said TVS Motors is also applying AI to employee engagement, reflecting the company's broader digital transformation strategy. Sateesh Seetharamiah, CEO of EdgeVerve, said his company has seen productivity improvements of 'close to 40 to 50 per cent' using AI. The 'AI for India' summit, organised by AI4India, seeks to establish actionable collaboration between deep tech startups, large enterprises, academia, civic bodies, and government stakeholders. ANI reported that the initiative promotes ethical research, open innovation, and capacity-building, with campaigns like DataDaan designed to ensure AI reaches every Indian. According to ANI, the summit is also showcasing cutting-edge models and technologies from leading startups such as Sarvam, BharatGen, Latlong AI, Parlaxiom, and Pienomial. Industry speakers from HDFC Bank, Tejas Networks, Sahamati Foundation, and Yotta are also participating. The ongoing discussions reflect a broader push to position India as a global hub for ethical and inclusive AI development, with institutions and industry converging to develop solutions that are both technologically advanced and socially responsible. Safe Summer Campaign: Abu Dhabi Police lists key measures to keep children safe in cars

The Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters has warned people against leaving their children unattended in vehicles during the summer season while travelling or when the car is parked. The police have issued an advisory listing key measures to ensure children's safety inside cars as a part of the 'Safe Summer' campaign in collaboration with the Civil Defence Authority. The police have highlighted six essential safety measures to protect children inside vehicles, especially critical during the summer months, when temperatures are on the higher side and families rely heavily on cars for travelling. Prevent children from opening the vehicle doors or attempting to drive. Never allow children to sit in the front seat, especially behind the steering wheel, during driving. Other key measures Front seat safety restrictions Live Events The police have strictly prohibited children aged 10 or below or those shorter than 145 cm from sitting in the front seat of a vehicle in view of the safety risks, including accidents. When an accident occurs, the front seat typically bears the most impact, increasing the likelihood of severe injuries for children. Violating this rule will invite a fine of Dh400. The regulation also applies to adults under 145 cm in height. Seat belts are crucial To minimise the risk of injury in road accidents, seat belts are crucial as they help in keeping children in place, significantly mitigating the chance of serious injuries. During sudden collisions or hard braking, seat belts restrict body movement, providing added protection to the child's head, neck and torso. Summer vehicle safety awareness In a bid to promote public awareness of summer vehicle safety, particularly for road travel, authorities have laid emphasis on the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices during high-temperature conditions. Six key public awareness messages to ensure safety: Regular maintenance, tyre checks, fluid checks, brake inspection, light functionality, and valid documentation.
