India could potentially host Italian Super Cup, says Serie A commercial director

Reuters18-03-2025
BANGALORE, March 18 (Reuters) - Serie A might consider India as a potential host for the Italian Super Cup, in an effort to broaden the tournament's global audience, the Italian league's commercial and marketing director Michele Ciccarese has said.
The Italian Super Cup, which is played between the winners and the runners-up of the previous season's Serie A and Coppa Italia, was hosted in Saudi Arabia in January where AC Milan defeated Inter Milan 3-2 to win the trophy for the eighth time.
When asked about India's potential to host the Super Cup, Ciccarese confirmed that it aligned with the league's strategy.
"What we do is to bring our international trophy like the Super Cup in all over the world, for a simple reason, to engage a wider audience and bring the best of that culture," Ciccarese said during the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit.
"So, that's exactly what we might do, and take the conversation forward to ... come here and play in India."
India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics is an attempt to position the country as a global sports hub.
Ciccarese suggested that the influence of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket competition could promote the country and bring attention to the achievements of other sports, drawing parallels with the "Made in Italy" project.
"Made in Italy is how we engaged with all the 20 Serie A clubs, and each club provides one of the important players to promote, not only the city, but the clubs, the territory, the production chain and everything that is around that club," he said.
"That's exactly what we are suggesting, or maybe potentially to create a cross-market activation with the IPL together in order to help grow the grassroots, to have the right presence in the 2036 Olympics for Indian football."

Italy's service sector sees stronger growth in July, PMI shows

ROME, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Italy's service sector expanded for an eighth month running in July and at a slightly faster pace than the month before, a survey showed on Tuesday, offering hope for firmer growth in the euro zone's third-largest economy. The HCOB Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for services rose to 52.3 in July from 52.1 in June, comfortably above the 50.0 threshold that separates growth from contraction. A Reuters survey of eight analysts had pointed to a reading of 52.6. "This modest acceleration reflects a sector that remains resilient, underpinned by steady domestic demand and a cautiously improving outlook," said Nils Müller, an economist at Hamburg Commercial Bank AG. Nonetheless, new export business declined for the 12th straight month, reflecting ongoing fragility in global demand, he added. Growth in new business eased for a third month running, with the related subindex slipping to 51.4 from 52.0, the weakest reading in six months, while the services employment subindex fell to 52.3 from 52.8. HCOB's sister survey for the manufacturing sector, published last week, showed contraction for a 16th straight month in July but at a considerably slower rate than the month before. The composite PMI, combining manufacturing and services, rose to 51.5 in July from 51.1 in June, the highest reading since May. The Italian economy unexpectedly shrank 0.1% in the second quarter from the previous three months, after the government in April halved its 2025 growth estimate to 0.6% amid mounting uncertainty due to U.S. tariffs.

Trio of Hundred teams will adopt Indian names

Indian investors in the Hundred are set to rename their teams to align with IPL brands, and a move to the T20 format is possible from 2029. On Wednesday the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that six of the eight deals to buy Hundred franchises had been completed, with Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets still outstanding. The investors in those two teams – the Ambani family (Mumbai Indians) and Cain International (which is fronted by the Chelsea owner Todd Boehly) respectively – effectively have a deadline of October 1 to complete the deals as they take operational control of the teams on that date. The funds from the other six deals are in, and will be spread across the 18 counties, who stand to take at least £18m each. The first raft of payments – an 'unfettered' £400,000 – will land in county accounts on Thursday. In all, each of the 11 non-host counties stand to receive just over £24m from the sale of 49 per cent of the eight teams. The money is subject to ECB 'guardrails' with counties required to prove to the governing body what they will use it for. The priorities are paying down debt, investing in infrastructure and building cash reserves. The host counties will take around £18m, plus whatever they sold of their own share. In the case of Yorkshire – who sold all of their 51 per cent share of Northern Superchargers to the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Indian Premier League team – this figure will be north of £50m, allowing them to pay off a considerable debt to their chairman Colin Graves. 'The deal puts the club in a strong financial position, which has been far from the case for many years here, and we can start looking towards a very bright future,' said Sanjay Patel, Yorkshire's chief executive. 'The first priority is clearing our debts. We will then be looking at how we can invest the surplus funds to not only safeguard the future, but enable us to flourish.' Tournament could switch to T20 in 2029 The ECB chief executive, Richard Gould, and the managing director of the Hundred, Vikram Bannerjee, who has overseen the sales process, said they expected three of the teams to change their names ahead of the 2026 season. The three are all owned by Indian Premier League teams looking to align their new purchases with their wider brand. Manchester Originals are likely to become Manchester Super Giants, Northern Superchargers are likely to incorporate Sunrisers into their name, while the Ambani family will be keen to introduce an element of the Mumbai Indians brand (probably the initials MI) to Oval Invincibles. Also up for debate in four years' time will be the format of the tournament, with a switch to T20 possible from 2029, when the next broadcast cycle comes in. 'That's one of the things that will be discussed,' said Bannerjee. 'It works elsewhere but in this country the format has provided us with some really interesting things, especially from a broadcast perspective. 'I'm sure it will be discussed, at the moment it's the Hundred format and that will remain for now, but let's see where we get to in the long term.' Gould also confirmed that England would only play men's or women's international cricket during the Hundred as a 'last resort' to ensure better player availability. 'We want the clearest window possible,' he said.

Lookman goes AWOL Ademola Lookman has gone AWOL and did not turn up to Atalanta training today. Lookman, 27, was the subject of a £39m bid from Inter Milan last week that was rejected. The former Everton man put out a lengthy statement accusing Atalanta of 'broken promises' and 'poor treatment', claiming he had an agreement with them to leave. But club chief Luca Percassi responded to say that the agreement involved Lookman of not joining another Serie A club. His relationship with the club is at an 'all-time low'. There is no new offer from Inter, while PSG and Arsenal have previously been linked. The Gunners view him as possible alternative to Eberechi Eze.
