North Wales Crusaders bag another win in their title quest

Leader Live3 days ago
Carl Forster's charges have demonstrated they are the team to beat this season and they took another giant stride towards the championship with their 20-6 home triumph against Dewsbury Rams.
Title rivals Midlands Hurricanes lost out at Workington Town and Crusaders are now four points clear.
In a rematch from the opening day of the League One season, Crusaders came firing out of the blocks.
Looking to complete a league double versus the Rams, North Wales had the lead in the ninth minute when Pat Ah Van was sent clear for a try by Jordy Gibson's pass.
Dewsbury looked to attack and a threatening high kick was gathered under pressure by Ollie Brookes.
Then, on 17 minutes, Crusaders managed to stretch their advantage.
Lloyd Roby was on hand with the try and Jamie Dallimore duly added the extra two points from wide out.
Things got even better for Crusaders just four minutes later. Chris Barratt opened up the Dewsbury defence with a superb run and Olly Davies was there to grab the home side's third score of the afternoon. Dallimore was once again on the money with his conversion attempt and North Wales had a healthy 16-point advantage.
Crusaders will have wanted to keep their opponents out for the whole half, but this didn't turn out to be the case.
Just a minute away from the interval, Dewsbury finally got themselves on the scoreboard with Liam Copland's converted try in the corner and this managed to cut North Wales' advantage to 10 points at the midway mark.
North Wales, victorious against high-flying rivals Midlands Hurricanes and Workington in recent weeks, will have been aiming for a positive opening to the second half under the sun at Colwyn Bay's Stadiwm CSM.
It was nip-and-tuck when the action got back underway and no further work was required from the scoreboard operators during the initial stages.
Aiming to edge closer to their hosts, Dewsbury did manage to win a penalty deep in Crusaders' territory, but North Wales were able to deal well with this and regain possession.
As the half developed, North Wales demonstrated their defensive prowess to force their opponents into a goal-line drop-out.
It was game over with six minutes left to play as North Wales claimed their fourth try of the contest. Sam Wilde pounced to score from Gibson's kick through.
This hard-fought victory keeps Crusaders clear at the top of the standings and with six matches left to play, North Wales know that four more triumphs will be sufficient to spark a title-winning party.
Another week off is in the offing for North Wales, before they return to action with their trip to Newcastle Thunder on July 27.
Swinton are up to second after their 52-10 win over Newcastle, while Midlands lost out 29-12 at Workington. Elsewhere, Goole thrashed Whitehaven 56-6.

Wrexham AFC: Andy Mangan leaves Stockport for Botafogo role

The pair had previously worked together while obtaining their coaching badges and will link up again after Ancelotti was announced as the new manager of Botafogo last week. Mangan, who scored 24 goals in 65 Conference games for Wrexham between 2010 and 2011, was on the verge of joining Ancelotti and father Carlo at Real Madrid in September, but the move did not go ahead after his work permit was rejected. The former Fleetwood striker joined the Stockport coaching staff last summer and helped the team earn a third-place finish in League One, where they were then defeated in the play-off semi-finals. A Stockport statement said: 'We wish Andy well in this exciting new chapter of his career and thank him for his efforts during his time with us.'

Kilmarnock makes it two Premier Sports Cup wins from two as they defeat Livingston

Mo Sylla's own goal was the difference between the sides Kilmarnock took control of their Premier Sports Cup group with a 1-0 victory over fellow Premiership outfit Livingston at Rugby Park. ‌ In new boss Stuart Kettlewell's home debut, the hosts were fortunate to pick up the points with the game decided by a Mo Sylla own goal on the half hour mark while Killie debutant Max Stryjek pulled off a string of impressive saves to keep a clean sheet against his former side. ‌ The victory makes it two wins from two for Kettlewell's side and takes them a step closer to the knockout stages. ‌ Kettlewell elected to ring the changes with Max Stryjek handed his Killie debut against his former club, replacing Eddie Beach in goal. David Watson, Liam Polworth, Kyle Magennis, Marcus Dackers and Djenairo Daniels were all handed starts at the expense of ex-Livi skipper Jamie Brandon, Greg Kiltie, Rory McKenzie and attacking duo Bruce Anderson and Scott Tiffoney. It was the visitors who started the brighter with Stryjek twice denying Stevie May. Neat passing in the middle of the park led to Robbie Muirhead sending the striker through. His first effort was saved with the rebound falling back to him - only for Stryjek to thwart him again. Killie threatened moments later but Brad Lyons' delivery across goal to the unmarked Daniels was too far in front of the striker for him to properly challenge Jerome Prior. Goal mouth action was lacking so it was perhaps no surprise that the deadlock was broken in fortuitous circumstances around the half hour mark. A lack of communication in the Livi box saw the hosts take the lead when Prior's punch bounced off Sylla and into the net. Livi reacted well, though, and twice went close to equalising before the break with Stryjek denying Muirhead on both occasions - firstly tipping an angled drive wide before making a smart save from a free-kick. While the action was frantic in the second half, genuine chances were at a premium. Livi went searching for a leveller but Danny Wilson's header that flashed wide was the best they could muster while Marley Watkins was denied by Prior in the closing moments as Killie looked to put the game to bed. Killie have the weekend off before resuming their Group H action on Tuesday night away to League One side Kelty Hearts.

Liverpool set to recruit 'highly-rated' Man Utd coach as new under-18s manager

Liverpool are in advanced talks to recruit 'highly-rated' coach Simon Wiles from their arch rivals Manchester United, according to reports. Wiles is currently in charge of United U14s at Old Trafford but is now set to become the U18s head coach for Premier League champions Liverpool. The 40-year-old only joined United in September 2024 after a spell as caretaker boss of Salford City, owned by Gary Neville and David Beckham. But The Athletic have reported that Wiles is now heading to Anfield to replace Marc Bridge-Wilkinson as the Reds' new U18s manager. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Wiles' first coaching role came in Blackpool's academy in June 2013, before he decided to refocus on his playing career, which ended in 2018. After hanging up his boots, Wiles became an U18s coach for League One club Fleetwood Town and was their interim manager in 2021 when they sacked Joey Barton. He swapped Fleetwood for Salford in 2022, working as a first-team coach, before being snapped up by United's academy in September last year. His expected departure from Old Trafford is a significant blow given the amount of academy coaches to progress and leave for a raised position. Justin Cochrane, Paul McShane, Tom Huddlestone, Neil Wood, Neil Ryan, and Neil Gittins are just some of the other coaches to have left United. Wiles is expected to work with Anthony Ryan when he joins Liverpool, who will step up from the U15s to become assistant head coach for the U18s. Ryan is currently working as Liverpool U18s' interim boss after Bridge-Wilkinson left following 10 years of service at the end of last season. Wiles played as a midfielder for the likes of Blackpool, Dunfermline Athletic and Barrow. He also spent time on loan at Macclesfield Town. After leaving Barrow, he became an U10s coach for former club Blackpool but then joined Chorley before spells at Salford and Bamber Bridge. Wiles won the FA Trophy with Barrow during the 2009-10 season. He played 40 games for Blackpool – where he started his career in 2003 – with 27 of those appearances coming when they were in League One.
