Damian Willemse ready to strut his stuff for Boks against Italy at Loftus
Willemse wants to put months of frustration behind him when South Africa bid to make a winning start to a double header against a fired-up Azzurri outfit over the next two weekends in Tshwane and Gqeberha.
Willemse is making his return to the Bok side for the first time since the 2023 World Cup final, having missed out on an entire international season because of injury.
'It has been a difficult year,' he said. 'After two years with injury, and then obviously with the suspension keeping me out and stopping me from playing rugby.
'But I am very happy to get another shot and for the coaches to believe in me and to get my opportunity again to play. I'm looking forward to it and I'm excited.
'I'm a bit nervous, obviously. The last game I played was the World Cup final. I'll have to obviously get in and just do my primary job, and hopefully the rest of the boys will take care of me and look after me.

Second Springboks Test on SABC as Mzansi cries out for more Bok rugby
The second Springboks vs Italy Test will be broadcast on SABC, allowing more South Africans to witness international rugby live, which is not the norm. Picture: BackpagePix Occasionally though, SuperSport SA Rugby ( Saru ) and the SABC broker deals to have Springbok matches televised on the national broadcaster. That excludes the majority of the SA public from watching the Springboks play live. It's no secret that Springbok rugby in South Africa can typically only be viewed on paid-TV broadcaster SuperSport. The news on Thursday that the second Test between the Springboks and Italy on July 12 will be televised live on the national broadcaster is excellent for the SA public. The Unifying Power of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Saru president Mark Alexander cited the example of the 1995 Rugby World Cup as a great way to unify the country, as the 30th anniversary of the victory in the final was celebrated late last month. 'The 1995 triumph was a moment that captured the attention of the world – revealing unmatched power of sport to bring people together, to heal deep wounds and to inspire a country that was still finding its feet as a young democracy,' said Alexander. 'As Saru, we are working closely with our broadcasters to ensure that all South Africans can be part of this historic occasion.' SA Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie has said it was his aim to get more Springbok games shown on SABC, but that seems to still be a work in progress. Nomsa Chabeli, the SABC's Group CEO, said: 'The public broadcaster extends its appreciation to SARU and SuperSport for the spirit in which negotiations took place, to enable us to broadcast this historic match. 'It is important that the SABC is not left out of key national sporting events, which bring the nation together, and rugby has been very instrumental in doing that. 'This agreement also highlights the reach that the public broadcaster has in universal access to the nation through its TV and radio platforms, as millions of South Africans will have an opportunity to witness this historic moment. 'We call upon all South Africans to tune in, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Rugby World Cup win in 1995.' @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

Italy's Joburg-born Ross Vintcent won't back down against the Springboks
Italy's Johannesburg-born loose forward Ross Vintcent is eager to face the top-ranked Springboks in Pretoria, drawing on past experiences against South African teams to prepare for the challenging match. Picture: Matthieu Mirville / DPPI via AFP Facing the Springboks at the moment is a daunting task for any rugby player, but it's one that Johannesburg-born Italy loose forward Ross Vintcent will be relishing when the sides clash at Loftus Versfeld, in Pretoria, on Saturday. Having won the last two Rugby World Cups and already building towards the 2027 edition, the Springboks are a formidable force. South Africa are also ranked first in the world, with Italy down in 10th. It means that Italy will be heavy underdogs for the clash, but it's not too much of a venture into the unknown as Vintcent explains.

All eyes on Damian Willemse after last wearing Springboks' jersey during 2023 victory parade
FILE - The last time Damian Willemse was seen in a Springboks jersey was during the trophy parade for winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Image: PHILL MAGAKOE / AFP The last time South Africans saw Damian Willemse in a Springbok jersey was during the early part of the 2023 Rugby World Cup victory parade through the streets of South Africa. Nobody could get Willemse out of the kit he wore with much distinction during that World Cup-final win over the All Blacks. It was probably only after the stench of the kit got to the players on the bus that it decided he needed a fresh outfit. Unfortunately, Willemse hasn't worn the Springboks jersey since sustaining a couple of injuries that kept him out of the entire 2024 international season. The jersey he cherishes so much was taken away from him. A lot has changed since Damian Willemse last wore the No 15 jersey, as the Sharks' Aphelele Fassi having a breakout 2024 to put him top of the list as far as the fullback berth is concerned. Veteran Willie le Roux is also still going strong and is on the cusp of his 100th Test in the green and gold. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Fassi made eight starts at fullback in Willemse's absence in 2024 after seemingly leapfrogging Le Roux as the Boks first-choice No 15. 'The Weekend Special' - a nickname Fassi earned because his surname is similar to South Africa's music legend Brenda Fassie - played in most of the big matches for the Boks. He faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Argentina in the Rugby Championship decider in Mbombela and featured in the big November Test against England at Twickenham. Fassi also started in the season opener against the Barbarians as Willemse was still serving a suspension for a dangerous tackle while playing for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship match. But this weekend, against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Willemse will finally feature again in a Bok jersey after almost 20 months. Willemse certainly knows he is going to be in the spotlight after Fassi's bright performances. But the Strand-born player is keen to make up for lost time. 'I'm looking forward to it, very excited. Lots of nerves as well, it's my first Test match in a couple of years since the World Cup final,' Willemse told SuperSport TV this week ahead of the Italy clash. 'A lot has changed, especially at the international level. The rest of the boys who have played in the position have done an excellent job. They have set the standard. 'For me, coming in, I know there will be a lot of eyes on me. But I'm just focussed on my primary job. Hopefully I can have a good game.' Fassi has proven to be a lethal counter-attacking player in the new era of the Boks' offensive play. He cut the line beautifully last season, while he showed off his attacking kicks in the wet against the BaaBaas. But Willemse will also welcome the Boks' new style of play as a lethal runner from the back himself. The Stormers man has wonderful anticipation and can also slip in flyhalf to distribute when needed.
