Kerala University turns battleground: SFI workers storm campus, protest against ‘saffronisation'; accuse VCs of bias, Sangh links
In Kannur, SFI protestors raised slogans against Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who also serves as the Chancellor of state universities, and broke through police barricades outside Kannur University.
Police deployed water cannons in response, but the protestors reached the Vice-Chancellor's office and held a sit-in protest inside.
Similar tensions were reported at Calicut University in Thenjippalam, Malappuram district, where a brief scuffle broke out between the police and students during the march.
At Kerala University headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, SFI workers broke open the gates and stormed into the office complex. Police were unable to prevent the breach, and protestors entered the university building, shouting slogans against the Governor and Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal.
The SFI demanded the resignation of the Vice-Chancellors of both Calicut and Kerala universities, accusing them of aligning too closely with the ideology of the Sangh Parivar.

Police forces remained on high alert at all affected locations to prevent further escalation.
Universities in Kerala have recently become flashpoints in a growing power tussle between the Raj Bhavan and the Left-led state government.
Tensions intensified after several Vice-Chancellors, appointed on a temporary basis by the Chancellor, undertook actions that student and teacher unions affiliated with the Left claim support the Sangh Parivar's ideology.
Kerala University has witnessed heightened unrest since earlier this month, following the suspension of the Registrar by vice-chancellor Kunnummal. The Registrar had issued a notice cancelling a private event attended by Governor Arlekar at the Senate Hall, where a portrait of Bharat Mata holding a saffron flag was displayed.

Trump warns Russia to end Ukraine war in 50 days, confirms major Nato, Kyiv arms deal
Trump on Monday warned Russia to end the Ukraine war within 50 days or face harsh new sanctions, while confirming a major arms deal for Nato and Ukraine read more President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office of the White House, on Monday in Washington. AP US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a warning to Moscow, demanding that Russia end its war in Ukraine within 50 days or face sweeping new economic sanctions. At the same time, he also confirmed a major deal to supply what he called the 'greatest military equipment' to both Nato allies and Kyiv. 'We're very, very unhappy' with Russia, AFP quoted Trump as telling reporters as he met Nato chief Mark Rutte in the White House. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Trump: 'One of the reasons that you're here today is to hear that we are very unhappy, I am, with Russia…We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days. Tariffs at about 100%… I'm disappointed in President Putin because I thought we would have… — The Bulwark (@BulwarkOnline) July 14, 2025 'We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent,' said President Trump on Monday, warning of 'secondary tariffs' aimed at Russia's remaining trade partners in a move designed to further isolate Moscow and cripple its economy amid ongoing Western sanctions. Trump and Rutte also announced a new agreement under which Nato will purchase US weapons — including Patriot missile defence systems — and distribute them to Ukraine to support its fight against Russia's invasion. 'This is billions of dollars worth of military equipment is going to be purchased from the United States, going to Nato… and that's going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield,' Trump was quoted as saying. Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister, described the new US-led arms deal for Ukraine as a major step forward, confirming that a growing number of European nations have committed to funding the effort. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'This is really big. This is really big,' The Guardian quoted Rutte as saying, adding that President Trump called him last Thursday with a clear message: he wanted to give Ukraine the weapons it needed, but expected European allies to cover the costs. 'Which is totally logical,' Rutte added. Calling it a sign of Europe 'stepping up,' Rutte revealed that several countries are already on board with the plan, including Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, and Canada. 'And this is only the first wave, there will be more,' he added. The Nato chief said the alliance will coordinate closely to identify and meet Ukraine's battlefield needs. 'It will mean that Ukraine can get his hands on really massive numbers of military equipment, both for air defence, but also missiles, ammunition,' The Guardian quoted Rutte as saying. Trump began his second term in January by seeking a rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, aiming to fulfill his campaign pledge to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The move raised alarm in Kyiv, where officials feared he might abandon Ukraine — especially after Trump and his aides sharply criticized President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a February Oval Office meeting. Trump frustrated with Putin However, in recent weeks, Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin, as Russia has not only refused to halt its three-year invasion but has intensified its military offensive. 'I don't want to say he's an assassin, but he's a tough guy,' AFP quoted Trump as saying of Putin on Monday. Last week, Trump had teased an announcement on Monday on Russia. He then announced on Sunday that he would send vital Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help it fend off escalating barrages of Russian attacks. Washington has also U-turned from an announcement earlier this month that it would pause some arms deliveries to Kyiv. Rutte's visit to the White House is the first since the former Dutch prime minister described Trump as 'daddy' at a Nato summit in The Hague in June. Moscow intensifies strikes Moscow has unleashed record waves of drone and missile strikes over the past few weeks, with the number of Ukrainian civilians killed or wounded in June hitting a three-year high, according to UN figures. Trump's announcement on Monday came as his special envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv to meet Zelenskyy. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Zelensky hailed the 'productive meeting', saying they had discussed 'strengthening Ukraine's air defense, joint production, and procurement of defense weapons in collaboration with Europe.' The Ukrainian leader also said he was 'grateful to President Trump for the important signals of support and the positive decisions for both our countries.' Russian forces meanwhile said on Monday they had captured new territory in eastern Ukraine with the seizure of two villages, one in the Donetsk region and another in the Zaporizhzhia region. Its forces also killed at least three civilians in the eastern Kharkiv and Sumy regions on Monday, regional Ukrainian officials announced. In Kyiv, Zelensky also proposed a major political shake-up, recommending economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko take over as the country's new prime minister. Svyrydenko said on social media that Ukraine was facing a 'crucial time.' With inputs from agencies

Opposition parties hit the streets in Tripura over state government's decision to install smart meters, hike power tariff
Various Opposition parties in Tripura Monday protested against the state government's recent decision to install smart electric meters and hike power tariffs. The Congress organised a protest outside a Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) office in Agartala. Addressing the rally, a Congress leader said, 'The power tariff has been hiked without informing the people. We strongly condemn this and demand the withdrawal of the hike in power tariff… In West Bengal, their party is opposing the installation of smart meters, but in Tripura, the power minister is in favour of the installation of smart meters.' The Congress also organised similar protests over the issue in Unakoti, North Tripura, and Gomati districts. 'In Tripura, people want to know how much commission did (the BJP) get for introducing the smart meter. We demand that the installation be stopped immediately and the hike in tariff be withdrawn for the sake of poor people. There is no food, work here but the government, for the sake of a section of people, is trying to put the burden on the poor people,' said a Congress leader of Pabiacherra Block in Unakoti district. Another Congress leader in Kailasahar said the BJP had assured of fulfilling over 300 promises in their 'Vision Document' before coming to power. He claimed that the BJP said it would introduce a reasonable power tariff. 'After the BJP came to power, the power services are in a miserable condition in Kailasahar. On top of this, the BJP-led state government has decided to install smart meters. Why can the double-engine government not control power tariffs?' he added. Likewise, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) organised a protest in front of Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath's residence in Agartala, demanding the withdrawal of the power tariff and rollback of the decision to install smart meters. 'We have organised a sit-in in front of the power minister's residence and we shall continue our protest till he withdraws the decisions,' a TMC leader said. Meanwhile, the primary Opposition party, CPI(M), also protested in front of the Udaipur Bidyut Bhawan. 'We demand the state to stop the installation of smart meters and roll back the hike in power tariffs,' said a CPI(M) leader. Reacting to the protests, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said, 'There has been an attempt to confuse people. The power tariff and the smart meter are two separate things. In the last seven years of BJP rule, the power tariff has been hiked by 24.9 per cent, while the tariff rose by 116.03 per cent during the last seven years of the erstwhile CPI(M) government.' 'Earlier, power services were directly under the state power department, but the Left Front government formed the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited in 2004,' he added. The minister said power consumers can keep both meters – the existing electronic meters and the new smart meters – if they have doubts about the smart meters. If any fault were to be detected in smart meters, the government will roll back the decision to install them, he added.

Nixing of suspension: KU VC ridicules registrar's claims
Thrissur/T'puram: Kerala University acting vice-chancellor Mohanan Kunnumal on Monday criticized registrar K S Anil Kumar, saying there was no legal basis to the latter's claims that the university syndicate withdrew his suspension. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He was speaking to reporters after meeting the governor Rajendra Arlekar, who is also the chancellor of the university in Thrissur. "The syndicate has not met. The vice-chancellor should be chairing the syndicate meeting. Subsequently, the vice-chancellor should sign the order issued after the syndicate takes such a decision. Where is that order, who has signed it? There is no such order. The university statute makes it clear that whenever there is no syndicate, or senate or academic council, it is the vice-chancellor who is the syndicate, senate and academic council,'' Kunnumal said. The vice-chancellor dismissed the reports that about 2,500 degree certificates were pending as "blatant lies". He said only around 500 such files were pending. "Those files can be disposed of within minutes, once I reach there. But those who are on an agitation there have threatened that I will not be allowed to set my foot there at the university headquarters. I'm wondering why those who make such threats against the head of a university are not arrested. The police are actually giving protection to the agitators. They are trying to block even the online disposal of files. The protesters launched an agitation even in front of my wife's residence in Thiruvananthapuram. I'm not particular about going to the university, but my worry is about the children studying there. I'm not scared to go there, but I know the students and even the police may get injured, during the possible violence if I go there. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I don't want that to happen. I'm a doctor and I know the consequences of such violence. I don't want even a drop of blood to be shed in my name'' Kunnumal said. He alleged that it was the registrar, not the vice-chancellor, who had precipitated such a crisis. The VC said he had briefed the governor on these details. He said he hoped that as the head of the state, the governor would take appropriate decisions in the best interest of the state, particularly the students. SUCC urges guv to revoke registrar's appointment Even as the tussle between the vice-chancellor and the registrar continues to affect the functioning of Kerala University, the Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) urged Arlekar to revoke the appointment of Kumar as registrar. Kunnumal stopped looking at the files cleared by Kumar, whom he suspended in connection with the Bharat Mata controversy. A large number of files, including degree certificates, are pending for the approval of the VC, who also ceased to attend his office in the university. SUCC said the very appointment of Kumar as the registrar was against university laws. As per the Kerala University statute 12 (14), deputation to the post of the university registrar should be given to central govt or state govt officials. "Kumar is a faculty member at a private college (Thiruvitamcore Devaswom Board College) under the university. He is continuing as the registrar based on a special order by the govt. This is against the university laws," the committee said. The service of a teacher from St Thomas College (a private college in Thrissur), who was appointed as registrar at Calicut University on deputation, was terminated following a quo warranto petition filed in the high court challenging the appointment, it pointed out. In Feb, the syndicate extended Kumar's appointment for four years. Although there were allegations of it being against the rules, all official members participated in the meeting to extend the appointment to protect the govt's special interest.
