Aer Lingus launches magical new winter route from Dublin

Aer Lingus is bringing a serious dose of winter magic to its upcoming schedule with the launch of a brand-new route from Dublin to Tromsø, Norway – one of the top spots on the planet to catch the Northern Lights in all their glory. Starting December 3, the airline will fly direct to Tromsø twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays, with flights running through March 25, 2026. One-way fares start at €99.99, including taxes, charges and carrier-imposed fees. Aer Lingus cabin crew member Lauryn Hamilton pictured as the airline announces a new winter route from Dublin to Tromsø. Pic: Naoise Culhane It's also not just for Irish holidaymakers as the new route opens up a direct link for Norwegians looking to explore Ireland too. Tromsø is one of the world's best places to catch the Aurora Borealis or to take advantage of their '24-hour skiing' experience. Susanne Carberry, Chief Customer Officer at Aer Lingus, said: 'Our new direct service from Dublin to Tromsø introduces Norway to the Aer Lingus network for the first time. 'This is a fantastic opportunity for our customers in Ireland to discover the natural beauty and unique experiences of Northern Norway this winter. 'The new route also offers the people of Tromsø and surrounding areas a convenient connection to Dublin and a chance to explore all that Ireland has to offer.' The destination is a great place to see the Northern Lights. Pic: Naoise Culhane Tromsø's appeal goes well beyond its light show with their famous Fjellheisen cable car whisking visitors up Mount Storsteinen for stunning views of the city and the iconic Arctic Cathedral. Just 12 km from the airport, Tromsø Alpinpark is ready to welcome 'skiers of all levels'. Ulv Elbirk from Avinor, the Norwegian airport operator, said they're expecting the route to attract not just Irish but also American visitors, giving Tromsø's tourism scene another boost. The new service is part of Aer Lingus' growing list of 'Coolcation' destinations which, as the name suggests, are cool in temperature but great for seeking adventure. Tromsø joins a busy winter lineup that also includes new routes from Dublin to Turin and from Cork to both Prague and Geneva.

THESE are all the passport rules that you need to know. Thousands of Brits were affected by mistakes which ruined their holidays last year. According to travel expert Alpine Elements, people are unaware of strict passport rules when travelling abroad, particularly to countries outside the EU. Last year alone, hundreds of people were either refused boarding or entry despite holding valid passports. This caused honeymoons to be ruined, cruises to be missed, and thousands of pounds were lost in non-refundable costs. Advertisement READ MORE ON PASSPORT BLUNDERS The 6-month validity rule Some destinations require UK passports to have at least six months left before the expiry date on arrival. So even though your passport may still be active, many border agents in countries will not let you though, even if they don't require a visa. Popular destinations that enforce this rule include: Dubai and the UAE, Thailand, Indonesia (including Bali), Turkey and Egypt The spokesperson from Alpine Elements explained: "It's a harsh rule but widely enforced. It catches a lot of people out because they assume no visa means no problem." Within the EU's Schengen Zone, UK travellers must have a passport that was issued within the last 10 years AND at least 3 months left before expiry on the return date. Why TSA May Ask for Multiple IDs: What Travelers Need to Know in 2025 Alpine Elements explained that the first condition has caught many UK residents off guard. They spokesperson explained: "People renew passports early, but if the new passport carries over old months, some airlines or border officials won't accept it." Passport Rules Everything you need to know about passports Whether you need a This is How long a A How to How to get The Why Real stories of ruined holidays Last summer, a couple from Leeds missed out on their honeymoon to Bali which they paid £5,000 for. The airline staff refused to check them in as their passports only had five months and three weeks left. This was just short of the six-month rule that is in force by Indonesia. Advertisement An additional family was denied boarding to Dubai after discovering their passports were over 10 years old. This was also despite having four months left before their travel documents experied. The spokesperson from Alpine Elements added: "People don't realise airlines can deny boarding based on destination entry rules. You don't even get to argue your case at immigration — you're stopped before take-off." What Brits should do before flying To avoid disappointment, you should check your passport at least six to eight weeks before travel. Advertisement Brits are advised to check both expiry and issue date by using the UK government's passport validity checker. Holidaymakers should renew their passport early if the expiry date is within six to nine months. Touritsts should also remain extra cautious if visiting countries like Thailand or UAE who have strict rules. Even for some cruise ports, the spokesperson explained: "It's heartbreaking to see someone turned away at the gate over a technicality. 'With post-Brexit changes and non-EU travel rules, Brits can't afford to be casual about passports anymore." "Even if you've travelled recently, double-check every time — the rules vary wildly depending on where you're going." 5 Some destinations do not allow passports that have less than six months left before the expiry date Credit: Getty Advertisement 5 One UK couple had a £5,000 holiday ruined Credit: Getty
