Astros concerned after Yordan Alvarez (hand) has setback

Reuters2 days ago
July 2 - Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez experienced a setback with his fractured right hand and will see a specialist, general manager Dana Brown told reporters prior to Tuesday's road game against the Colorado Rockies.
Brown said Alvarez will see the specialist on Wednesday.
Alvarez has missed two months due to the injury. He took batting practice in Houston on Saturday and reported to West Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday for the next step in his rehab, but that plan has changed after taking dry swings with a bat on Monday and reporting soreness in the hand on Tuesday.
"It's a tough pill to swallow, but at the end of the day his health is the most important thing here," Brown said. "And so, we'll let him take the time that he needs to get completely healed. At this point, the team is playing very well. We're 16 games over .500, we're six (games) up in the division, and so we'll take our time and let him continue to heal.
"Hopefully it won't be much longer and we'll get some good news in the next 48 hours."
The setback comes at a time when the Astros assumed their main power source was making swift progress and close to rejoining the squad.
"We felt like he was close because he had felt so good of late," Brown said. "And so this is certainly news that we didn't want."
Alvarez, 28, last played on May 2. He is batting just .210 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 29 games this season.
The three-time All-Star topped 30 homers in each of the previous four campaigns and owns a career slugging percentage of .573.
Houston manager Joe Espada wouldn't let Tuesday's news dim his enthusiasm.
"He is doing everything in his power to get back," Espada said. "He's staying optimistic and I'm staying optimistic with him. So we've just got to give it time and hopefully his hand heals and we get him back in our lineup."
The Astros also recalled utility player Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sugar Land, one day after placing shortstop Jeremy Pena (fractured rib) on the 10-day injured list.
Whitcomb, 26, is hitless in nine at-bats in seven games with the Astros this season. He is batting .280 with 19 homers and 43 RBIs in 60 Triple-A games.

Dodgers 3B Max Muncy (knee) set to undergo MRI

July 4 - Los Angeles Dodgers placed third baseman Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list on Thursday because of bruised left knee after he was injured during Wednesday's win against the Chicago White Sox. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Muncy departed after a collision while tagging out Chicago's Michael A. Taylor on a stolen-base attempt in the sixth inning. The play immediately preceded Clayton Kershaw's 3,000th career strikeout. Taylor also left the game with a contusion on the back of his left shoulder. Muncy, 34, is batting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 81 games. He was a Phase 2 finalist for a starting spot in the All-Star Game but lost out to the San Diego Padres' Manny Machado. In 10 major league seasons, eight of which have been with the Dodgers, Muncy is a two-time All-Star and a career .230 hitter with 208 home runs and 592 RBIs. His 203 home runs with the Dodgers are tied for seventh all-time in franchise history with Matt Kemp. Duke Snider leads the franchise with 389 home runs and Eric Karros is the all-time leader in its Los Angeles tenure with 270. Ruiz, 26, is a career .243 hitter with seven home runs and 57 RBIs in 178 games for the San Diego Padres (2022), Milwaukee Brewers (2022) and Athletics (2023-24). In 2023, he led the American League in steals with 67. The Dodgers obtained him in an April 2 trade with the Athletics for minor league right-hander Carlos Duran. Ruiz was batting .292 with eight homers, 37 RBIs and 38 stolen bases in 44 attempts over 66 games with Oklahoma City. The Dodgers also designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment and claimed infielder CJ Alexander off waivers from the New York Yankees. Berroa, 26, was purchased by the Dodgers from the Toronto Blue Jays on May 12 and has not appeared in a game for Los Angeles. He played in 28 games for the Blue Jays in 2024 and hit .189 (7-for-37). Alexander, 28, did not get into a game for the Yankees. He has played 10 major league games, including six for the Athletics earlier this season, and batted .160 (4-for-25). --Field Level Media

Angels place 2B Christian Moore (thumb) on 10-day IL

July 4 - The Los Angeles Angels placed rookie second baseman Christian Moore on the 10-day injured list on Thursday because of a left thumb sprain. In a corresponding move, the Angels selected the contract of shortstop Chad Stevens from Triple-A Salt Lake. Stevens was slated to bat ninth in the order and start at second base in his major league debut on Thursday at Atlanta. Moore, 22, dove while attempting to grab Ozzie Albies' grounder up the middle for a single and left the game in the sixth inning of an 8-3 loss to the host Braves on Wednesday. Moore was replaced by Kevin Newman. "Anytime you see somebody like (Moore) have an injury like that, you fear the worst," Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said. He said that Moore missing two weeks might be "looking at the best-case scenario." Moore made his major league debut on June 13. He is batting .189 (10-for-53) with three home runs and eight RBIs in 18 games. The Angels selected Moore with the eighth overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft. Stevens, 26, was batting .307 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 72 games at Salt Lake. The Angels also released right-hander Hector Neris, 36, who was 3-0 with a 5.14 ERA, seven walks and 19 strikeouts in 14 innings over 21 relief appearances this season. Neris also pitched this season for the Braves and was 0-1 with a 45.00 ERA after allowing five earned runs over one inning, giving him a combined 7.80 ERA for 15 innings in 2025. --Field Level Media

Jordon Hudson blamed as UNC loses out on top wrestling recruit amid 24-year-old's romance with Bill Belichick

North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick 's 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson is being blamed for a top wrestler's enrolment at another school. Speaking to Hurrdat Sports, Nebraska wrestling coach Mark Manning claimed Cornhuskers wrestling recruit A.J. Ferrari was interested in attending UNC until Hudson somehow became involved. The specifics of the allegation remain unclear but appear to involve a sexual battery claim Ferrari faced in August of 2022 that was later dropped in October of 2023. 'Rob Koll… the North Carolina coach who I've known for 35 years, and [is a] great friend of mine, called me up when they didn't let A.J. into… North Carolina,' Manning told Hurrdat Sports. 'A.J. was already there training some, and they didn't let him in admissions-wise for various reasons, and Bill Belichick's girlfriend had something to do with that.' Manning then suggested the program was trying to avoid negative publicity after recent allegations in Chapel Hill. In June, an unidentified female student told she planned to file a Title IX lawsuit against the school for allegedly mishandling her claim that she was nonconsensually filmed by a basketball player during a sexual encounter. UNC media relations declined comment to citing federal privacy laws. '[I'm] very serious,' Manning continued. '[Hudson was] one of the elements along with the men's basketball player that had [an alleged] sexual assault the week before, and just a lot of drama, I think, for that chancellor.' According to Manning, Koll then reached out to suggest Nebraska look at Ferrari. 'Rob was super disappointed,' Manning said. 'He spent a lot of time getting A.J. there, but they weren't going to let him into school. So he called me up and said, "Hey, Mark, you've got a great team and you should get A.J. Ferrari." 'And I would have never thought about that… He convinced me and then off we went.' Daily Mail has reached out to North Carolina athletic department spokespeople for comment. Ferrari won an NCAA title at 197 pounds with Oklahoma State in 2021. Then, after the sexual battery allegations were dropped, he transferred to Cal State Bakersfield in 2024. The Dallas native is coming off a 21-1 season in which he finished third at 197 pounds. Belichick's attempts to defend his relationship with Hudson and his disastrous interview with CBS have been laid bare in emails that emerged last month. The legendary NFL coach, 73, is preparing for his first season in college football but his tenure has been so far overshadowed by headlines surrounding his romance with Hudson A string of explosive reports have emerged over recent weeks, in the wake of a humiliating interview with CBS, when Hudson shut down questions about the start of their relationship. The clip went viral and sparked fresh speculation surrounding Hudson's influence over the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach. One clip of her at UNC practice caused a particular headache for the legendary coach and soon reports emerged that she had been banned from the team's facilities. UNC denied that was the case. In June, emails obtained by WRAL detailed the fallout from the CBS interview. They show that disgruntled fans felt the relationship was turning the school into a 'laughing stock'. In the emails, however, Belichick defended Hudson and their romance. 'Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship,' Belichick wrote to Beth Keith, a senior associate vice chancellor in the Office of University Communications. 'This is not a secret... Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. 'Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it.' He also explained why his young girlfriend was at the interview, which was organized to promote his new book: 'The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.' 'Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there,' Belichick claimed. 'I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book.'
