Ukraine says it shot down Russian Su-35 fighter jet
KYIV : Ukraine's air forces shot down a Russian Su-35 fighter jet this morning, the Ukrainian military said.
'This morning, on June 7, 2025, as a result of a successful air force operation in the Kursk direction, a Russian Su-35 fighter jet was shot down,' the military said on the Telegram messenger.
It gave no more details.
Russian forces have not yet commented on the matter while Reuters could not independently verify the report.
Ukraine's security agency, the SBU, conducted a large drone attack on over 40 Russian military aircraft last week, damaging or destroying tens of Tu-95 and Tu-22 strategic bombers, which Russia uses to fire long-range missiles at Ukraine.

BUDAPEST: Hungary's government will not support the European Union's new seven-year budget unless Brussels unlocks all suspended EU funds, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Saturday. The European Commission earlier this month proposed a 2 trillion euro EU budget for 2028 to 2034, with a new emphasis on economic competitiveness and defence. Then Orban said 'globalist bureaucrats' were plotting to 'drain Europe's money into Ukraine' while 'our farmers are rising up to defend their future'. Budget debates are among the most difficult in EU politics, bringing to the fore political and economic divisions among member countries. Orban, who swept the last four elections, faces a tough new opposition challenger in 2026, whose Tisza party has a firm lead over the ruling Fidesz party in most polls, at a time when the economy is stagnating. Pope Leo meets Russian Orthodox leader amid Ukraine tensions
VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo met on Saturday with Metropolitan Anthony, a senior cleric in the Russian Orthodox Church, in a possible effort to ease ties between the churches strained by the invasion of Ukraine. The pontiff saw Anthony, chairman of the department of external church relations, and five other high-profile clerics during an audience in the morning, the Vatican said in a statement without further elaborating. Since assuming the papacy in May, Leo has repeatedly appealed for peace in global conflicts and this month told visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that the Vatican was willing to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Russian officials, however, have said they do not view the Vatican as a serious venue for talks because it is surrounded by NATO member Italy which has supported Ukraine. In his first call with President Vladimir Putin, at the beginning of June, Pope Leo urged Russia to take steps towards ending the conflict.
