Pickleball tournament brings more than 200 athletes to Lethbridge
The event, a first for southern Alberta, was organized by the Lethbridge and Coaldale pickleball clubs in partnership with the Lethbridge and District Exhibition.

Players of all ages and skill levels competed in singles, doubles and mixed events from May 2 to May 4. A youth showcase on Friday was in the spotlight early on, featuring 25 junior athletes and underlining the sport's growing popularity among younger generations.
'The play was fantastic. It really shows the growth and the interest the sport has with the youth of our community,' said Klaus Witzke, president of the Lethbridge Pickleball Club.
While competition was fierce, community and connection were front and centre for many participants.

Organizers said a strong turnout has inspired them to plan for an even larger event in the future, with the hope of hosting a provincial or even national tournament in the years ahead.

The organizers of Vancouver's Dragon Boat Festival say they've been forced to cancel next year's event due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Organizers say they asked the city and province to work with them, but have received no support from either for 'alternate scenarios' they presented. The city and the province forecast the World Cup will attract more than a million out-of-province visitors between 2026 and 2031, generating over $1 billion in additional spending. The latest estimates peg the cost of hosting the event in B.C. as high as $624 million. Global News is seeking comment from municipal and provincial officials.

Clock ticking on Edmonton Elks to get into playoff position: ‘Every week is a must-win'
The Edmonton Elks are aware, with one-third of the CFL season behind them, that they're in must-win territory to have a chance at the playoffs. The Elks (1-5) at home to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-2) on Saturday are coming off a comeback attempt that fell short in Regina. Edmonton running back Justin Rankin, held to zero yards on three carries in the 21-18 loss to Saskatchewan Roughriders last week, said losing in no longer an option. 'It is starting to come up on some must-win games,' Rankin said. 'It sucks that we're behind the 8-ball right now, but there's nothing we can do about it. The past is the past and all we can focus on is the present. 'We have no other option but to win. That should be the thinking every week but now it's more than before. Every week is a must-win.' Fajardo's 346 passing yards and strong fourth-quarter performance last week earned him a second straight start against the surging Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who have won their last five games. Obtained in an off-season trade with the Montreal Alouettes, Fajardo said the Elks can build off their fourth-quarter momentum in Regina when Edmonton outscored the Roughriders 14-0 and he threw for a pair of touchdowns. To carry that momentum into Saturday requires a better run game that managed just 25 yards against Saskatchewan, and 20 of that on Fajardo scrambles. The Elks led the CFL in rushing last season. 'We have to execute better, that's the reality of it,' said head coach Mark Kalim. 'Teams play good defence but there are times when we could do better, and we have to make the most of those opportunities.' That won't be easy against a Hamilton team that gave up less than 55 rushing yards in three of its five straight wins. The offensive line often gets blamed for an ineffective running game. When it allows eight sacks, as Edmonton's did in Regina, the spotlight feels hotter. 'We know we can play with anybody, but the hard part for us, as an offensive line, is we feel if we had played better it may have been three points the other way,' lineman Mark Korte said. ‘Some nerves': Dylan Samberg's new contract with Winnipeg Jets came down to 11th hour
Better late than never. The Winnipeg Jets' blueline from last season will remain entirely intact after restricted free agent defenceman Dylan Samberg put his name on the dotted line earlier in the week, just ahead of the deadline. Samberg signed a three-year contract for an average of $5.75 million per year. The deal was struck just hours before they were set to go to arbitration. Samberg said there were a few nervous moments before the contract was finally completed and he had already flown into Toronto when the deal got done on the eve of the hearing. 'Obviously very excited about it,' Samberg told reporters on a Zoom call on Thursday. 'Excited to be back in Winnipeg for three more years. There's some nerves that go into it, especially as you get down to the deadline and whatnot. But I'm glad we were able to agree on a deal and get things moving forward.' And getting second pairing minutes last season only helped him play with more confidence. 'It's hard to make it to the league, but it's even harder to stay there,' he said. 'I'm happy with being able to stay there and continuing to grow and feel like each year that goes by, I become more confident and this last year with moving up to that second pair and logging more minutes, playing against tougher competition — I was happy with how I handled it and I'm excited for next year and I want to continue to grow on that second pair.' Samberg likes the group the Jets have assembled and is excited to get a chance to play with recent addition Jonathan Toews. 'I think it's huge,' said Samberg. 'Obviously a guy with experience and another voice to hear from. With Lows (Adam Lowry), Schenner (Luke Schenn), and now Toews, I think it'll be great. Obviously one of those guys that I grew up watching. 'It's very cool and I'm excited to meet him and I think this is a good thing for him and I think he's excited to get back home.
