Akshay Kumar walked out of Barsaat amid buzz of tensions with Priyanka Chopra. Producer Suneel Darshan recalls how the sudden exit left him shocked.
Filmmaker Suneel Darshan recently opened up about Akshay Kumar's sudden exit from the 2005 romantic drama Barsaat, which originally starred him along with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif. The producer-director, who has collaborated with Akshay in several films over the years, revealed that the actor backed out after shooting a romantic song with Priyanka, allegedly due to issues in his personal life. Barsaat was eventually done by Bobby Deol, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu.
Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Suneel said, 'Barsaat was designed immediately after Andaaz to again be a triangular love story with a new dimension, and Akshay was cast in the lead role." He recalled how Akshay had date issues and asked for a slight postponement, which the producer agreed to.
Romantic Track With Priyanka Already Shot
Suneel had already recorded the music and even filmed a song featuring Akshay and Priyanka. However, delays crept in when Priyanka had to travel for international commitments. 'Priyanka Chopra had some international shows for which she was out for 3 months. So the film kept getting delayed," he explained.
By the time she returned and it was time to begin the final leg of the shoot, Akshay invited Suneel to his set, something unusual, as they always met at the producer's office. 'He called me to inform me that there were some issues which were uncontrollable and had repercussions on his personal life. He asked me to take a decision on how we move forward."
Was It Priyanka or Him? Producer Opens Up
While rumours of a relationship between Akshay and Priyanka had already caught the media's attention, Suneel clarified that it wasn't about Akshay refusing to work with her. 'Either of them, the circumstances had reached such a point where… there were issues," he said, adding that the actor left it up to the producer to choose between the two. He continued, 'The audience, the public, the media did mention of a relationship, which the wife got more of…"
Suneel further revealed, 'Suddenly after asking that person to wait for 18 months for your dates, you one day just say, 'Sorry, I can't be a part of it.' I was shocked."
Akshay Promised Compensation But It Wasn't Enough
Though Akshay reportedly offered to do another film to make up for it, Suneel chose not to proceed with him. 'He did want to compensate by saying that I did the next film for you. But I did not. I just thought this was unbelievable. Coming from Akshay… your expectations were never too much."
Despite the setback, the producer harboured no hard feelings. 'He had promised me he would want to do 100 movies with me. I managed to do seven," Suneel concluded.

Last Updated: Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's Saiyaara crosses Rs 190 crore in just 8 days, beating Housefull 5 and emerging a massive blockbuster. Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda have become the talk of the town with their debut film Saiyaara, which is smashing records at the box office. According to the latest update by Sacnilk, the romantic drama has now crossed Rs 190 crore in just 8 days, making it one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. On its second Friday, Saiyaara added Rs 17.50 crore to its tally, pushing the total box office collection to Rs 190 crore. The film had a record-breaking opening with Rs 21.5 crore on day one and saw its highest single-day figure on Sunday at Rs 35.75 crore. Despite being a weekday release, Saiyaara managed to maintain a strong grip at the box office throughout the week, ending its first week at a massive Rs 172.75 crore. The Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda starrer is now outperforming several Bollywood biggies. With its latest collection, Saiyaara has surpassed the lifetime business of Sikandar, Sitaare Zameen Par, and Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5, which ended its run at Rs 183.3 crore. With no major releases this Friday—Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 has been postponed to August 1—Saiyaara is expected to continue its blockbuster run through its second weekend as well. Directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Yash Raj Films' CEO Akshaye Widhani, Saiyaara revolves around the love story of Krish Kapoor, an aspiring musician played by Ahaan Panday, and Vaani Batra, portrayed by Aneet Padda. The film explores their romance and heartbreak, especially after a dramatic twist forces Vaani to walk away from Krish. Critics and audiences alike have praised the film's fresh storytelling, the sizzling chemistry between the leads, and its chartbuster music, which has become a viral sensation. With glowing word-of-mouth and no competition in theatres, Saiyaara is well on its way to entering the Rs 200 crore club soon. Ishaan Khatter Opens Up About Reunion With Janhvi Kapoor: 'We Could Lean Onto Each Other...'

Ishaan Khatter opens up about filming Dhadak with Janhvi Kapoor as they reunite for Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, which premiered at Cannes 2025. Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, who made their Bollywood debut together in Dhadak back in 2018, have reunited after seven years for their upcoming film Homebound. The Neeraj Ghaywan directorial had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025 in May and is also set to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Dhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, was a Hindi adaptation of Nagraj Manjule's acclaimed Marathi film Sairat. The film explored issues of casteism and honour killing and went on to perform well at the box office. The much-anticipated spiritual sequel Dhadak 2, starring Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi, is slated for release on August 1. Now, ahead of Homebound, Ishaan opened up about his experience of working with Janhvi on Dhadak. In an interview with Zoom, the actor reflected on one of the film's most emotional scenes and shared, 'On Dhadak's set, Janhvi and I could lean onto each other." He further explained, 'My character is going through a lot of conflict. He is trying to be a man for her but he is not able to. He is dealing with his own issues. He has been uprooted from his family. You can see the cracks in him, his vulnerability. He is trying to be supportive, but inevitably he's dealing with his own demons." In Homebound, Ishaan stars alongside Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa. The story follows two childhood friends—Shoaib Ali (played by Ishaan) and Chandan Kumar (played by Vishal)—who hail from a North Indian village and are determined to break free from the burden of their marginalised identities. However, a series of events leads to internal and external conflicts that test their bond. While the film has already garnered international attention at Cannes, its theatrical release date is still under wraps. Homebound marks a significant reunion for Ishaan and Janhvi, and fans are excited to see the duo together on screen once again.
