
Stop coaching women to ‘lead like a man'
Too often, women in the workplace are told, explicitly or implicitly, that success means emulating male norms. Speak up more. Interrupt more. Show less emotion. But when women follow this advice, they're often penalized for it. The problem isn't that women need to change. Rather, our definition of leadership needs to change as it is still stuck in a mold that rewards masculine traits and sidelines others.
Based on our respective experiences researching gender bias at work and coaching senior executives on their communication skills, as well as our personal experiences, we've seen this pattern play out again and again. Women are coached to overcome imposter syndrome and project authority in ways that often backfire. Meanwhile, organizations suffer, missing out on broader leadership styles, emotional intelligence, and more inclusive decision-making.
Two urgent shifts are needed: First, we need to stop encouraging women to lead like men. Second, we must expand our understanding of what strong leadership looks like. Until we do, we're not just failing women, we're limiting our organizations' potential.
There are four specific ways women are often advised to 'lead like a man'—but instead of reinforcing gendered norms, we can coach everyone, regardless of gender, to adopt more inclusive, effective leadership strategies. Here are the four problematic approaches and what to do instead.
1. Avoid Weak Language
When outlining her strategy for obtaining the CEO role, Sylvia referenced how many stakeholders expected her, as a woman, to use weak language, but then penalized her for doing so. Sylvia decided that she would strategically use weak language with some old-school stakeholders but consciously avoid it with others. The question is, should this focus on weak language have come up at all?
'Weak language' is language that is tempered with disclaimers ('I don't know, but . . .'), hedges ('sort of,' 'I hope'), tag questions ('. . . don't you think?'), and apologies ('I'm sorry, but . . .'). Women are often faulted for using indecisive language, and we are all urged to avoid it.
So-called weak language can soften a message, convey interpersonal sensitivity, and build trust. As such, it can be a way to strategically position yourself with various cohorts. Recognizing the impact that it can have, we encourage a relabeling of 'weak language' to 'strategic language.'
This is about all of us being strategic or purposeful with our language, including when we demonstrate vulnerability. Certainly, leadership requires communicating with conviction. But let's coach everyone not to be overconfident when they speak. Leadership also requires curiosity and humility. Disclaimers, hedges, and tag questions are useful when we aren't totally sure and to express concern and humbleness. Strategic language can be a source of power and strength.
2. Be Authoritative
As a young information technology leader, Amy tried to emulate male colleagues through authoritative decision-making. But when Amy made a unilateral decision, she was surprised that she lost points with her staff. She quickly learned to seek everyone's input and ideally achieve consensus before making important decisions.
Sometimes guidance to be an authoritative leader is overt. A client of Andrea's who had served in multiple C-suite roles left her last position when her male CEO repeatedly insisted that she was too soft and she needed to 'be a killer.'
Authoritative leaders are also called visionary leaders, with their own vision for success. Men in leadership may default to using authority, as displays of dominance align with traditional male stereotypes and therefore tend to go unchallenged. While women may learn to use this approach in their attempts to establish credibility, it can backfire when they are misperceived as arrogant.
The problem with this noninclusive, authoritarian approach is that it concentrates decision-making with one person and increases the risk of failure. Overreliance on a single perspective can lead to blind spots, regardless of how competent or visionary that individual may be. Even the most capable leaders have limitations in their knowledge, experiences, and biases.
Particularly in less time-sensitive contexts, a participative, inclusive leadership style is better for everyone. Coach everyone to approach decision-making as a collaborative process. Invite input from all stakeholders, including those who may ask uncomfortable questions and those who typically remain silent. Building consensus will ensure all voices are heard, considered, and that everyone understands the rationale for decisions. This isn't about giving up control; it's about gaining valuable perspective and buy-in.
3. Master Self-Promotion
A former male boss once advised Amy to 'take credit' for the success of projects, explaining, 'Everyone takes credit for everything around here.' But while Amy had led or contributed significantly to many initiatives, she felt uncomfortable claiming to them to be her solitary achievements. Her teammates deserved recognition.
One of the most common questions Andrea hears from her female executive clients is: 'How can I talk about my work and strengths without sounding arrogant?' Notably, a leadership coach recently posed this question, proof that even those who coach others on confidence and communication can struggle with taking credit.
The response to women and men promoting their own work and achievements has very different outcomes. Research shows that when women self-promote, they are seen as less warm and likable, whereas men who do the same are seen as more competent.
Instead: Share Credit Generously
Everyone should be trained that strategic self-promotion is leadership, not arrogance, so that women aren't penalized for it. Then the solution isn't to promote your work any more or less. Rather, it's to take credit differently. Visibility matters, and as such it is important to promote our own work. But we all need to consider the extent to which we promote our own work, share credit, and spotlight others' successes. True leaders understand how to confidently communicate their value while also celebrating the contributions of those around them.
4. Don't Be So Emotional
After a recent workshop for female executives, Andrea heard from several women how effectively managing their emotions was a challenge. One woman said, 'My male colleagues can pound their fists and exude authority. Meanwhile, if I show emotion, I lose credibility.'
Another participant spoke up: 'Imagine having any conviction. Suddenly, I'm labeled as an 'angry Black woman!''
Typically, the leaders we admire exude an ability to stay calm and in control, especially in crises. It seems that leadership is synonymous with emotional regulation. At the same time, emotional 'outbursts' are interpreted differently for men versus for women. For men, displaying emotions is interpreted as passion or authenticity. For women, displaying emotion is a sign of weakness and lack of control.
Encourage everyone to lead with authenticity and discretion. Certainly, staying in control in crises situations is productive. But there are also benefits with sharing emotions and vulnerability. Communicating your convictions with passion can inspire a team. Leaders who demonstrate vulnerability also encourage a culture of psychological safety.
That said, this is not about being unfiltered. There is an important difference between authenticity and transparency. Filtering and discretion are key.
Redefining leadership
Sylvia's question of whether she should 'lead like a man' was not just personal. It reflected a broader problem faced by women in leadership: the unspoken expectation to conform to outdated, masculine ideals of authority and success.
If we want to cultivate inclusive, innovative organizations, we must redefine what great leadership looks like. Not by urging women to adapt, but by evolving the standards themselves. That's the only way we'll build a future workplace where all leaders can thrive on their own terms.

Bill limiting use of sales tax passes
GUILFORD COUNTY — Voters will be asked again to approve a sales tax increase of 0.25% of a penny for every $1 of sales, but this time legislation dictates how the revenue must be spent if the increase is approved. House Bill 305 was amended by Sen. Phil Berger Sr., R-Rockingham and Senate president pro tem, to set parameters on how the revenue, estimated at $28.7 million a year, would be allocated, with most of it going for teacher pay. The bill passed the General Assembly this week. The Guilford County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in mid-June to place the sales tax referendum issue on the November 2026 general election ballot. A little more than a week after the commissioners' action, Berger amended House Bill 305 to address the sales tax proposal. Berger, whose legislative district includes Guilford County and some precincts in High Point, has said he placed directives on allocating the tax revenue to assure Guilford County voters on how the money would be spent. Although the county commissioners have pledged that all revenue raised by the proposed sales tax increase would go to teacher pay, there was no provision in state law preventing the money from being directed to other purposes. 'House Bill 305 now provides them with information so they can make an educated decision,' Berger previously said. If the proposed tax increase is approved by voters and raises $28.7 million, this is how the money would have to be allocated, according to the new legislation: • Teacher pay supplements in Guilford County Schools, $19.2 million. • Guilford County Fire and Rescue Council for equipment purposes and capital expenditures, $5.5 million. • Guilford Technical Community College capital projects, $2.7 million. • Allocations for Whitsett, Summerfield, Stokesdale, Pleasant Garden and Oak Ridge, $1.3 million. Berger's allocation approach apparently was the first time that has been applied in North Carolina to a sales tax referendum. Whether it will change how Guilford County voters view the proposal is uncertain. Jackson believes he can provide change for city as mayor
Aug. 1—[italics] Editor's note: Between now and the election, The Decatur Daily will profile each of the four Decatur mayoral candidates. [end italics] After almost three decades on the Decatur City Council, Billy Jackson is running for mayor of a city he believes desperately needs a change. Jackson is running against Kent Lawrence, Butch Matthews and Suzie Wiley. They all want to replace outgoing Mayor Tab Bowling, who chose not to seek a third term. The Municipal Election is Aug. 26. Jackson said he thinks the city "has been void of leadership and of transparency from the mayor's office for many years. If we are going to grow, and, if we are going to thrive as a community, you have to have those components in place." Jackson said he's the only candidate with the necessary experience and educational background to be mayor. While other candidates have business experience, he said running a city is different from running a business. Jackson said he's the only candidate "who can start the process from Day 1" and not have to figure out what a mayor does or what powers the position has. "I'm the only one who can start moving this process in a positive direction to make sure that we can address the issues that have been left unaddressed for years or need to be addressed for the future," Jackson said. Local attorney Carl Cole, a former mayoral candidate, said he is supporting Jackson. "Billy's got more institutional knowledge of City Hall and how things work than probably anybody up there," Cole said. In discussing the city's leadership and his role on the council, Jackson once told The Daily that he "refuses to go along just to get along." While he stands by those comments, he said that philosophy would change if elected mayor. "The mayor is the mayor for the entire city, and I have to serve as mayor for every citizen in the city if elected," Jackson said. He said people who have known him for years, and not just through newspaper stories, "know that I'm a person who's willing to work with everybody to make sure that we have a successful outcome. That would be my role as mayor." Jackson said his term as City Council president from 2004 to 2008 is an example of how he operates. He said he worked hard to make sure they were working as a team, and every council member was part of the process. If a council member was absent from a meeting, he said he would take notes of council meetings for the absent member. This would allow that member to make an informed decision on an issue, he said. "I worked hard to make sure that everyone was included," he said. "That's the role of the mayor. He has to be able to work with everybody and try and bring them together." Cole said Jackson was an effective council president. "Billy is not afraid to stand up to power for what he believes in," Cole said. "He's cool under pressure. He doesn't get rattled despite some of the things that are thrown at him. All of these things are indicative of someone with exceptional leadership skills." Cole said Jackson will vote against issues that he doesn't think are right for his district or city, but he always has a legitimate reason for that vote. "Billy has disagreed with me on policies before," Cole said. "But the thing about Billy is when he's on the opposite side, he's smart enough that you want to know the reason why." Jackson said the city has to get back to the basics. "We've got to make sure we've got a clean, safe environment," Jackson said. "We've got to take care of our roads and our city and find a way so that the city is appealing to not only future residents but to current residents." Jackson said there are things that he believes "could be addressed with proper leadership." He said the city hasn't adequately addressed its homeless situation, and it should start by partnering with local homeless agencies. "We can't just shun people who are in this situation," Jackson said. Jackson said the city needs a plan on dealing with mental health issues. The Police Department employs a full-time mental health liaison, but Jackson said she can't always be available. The city may need to hire a private company to provide the necessary coverage for mental health crises, he said. "We've got to have 24-hour coverage when it comes to dealing with our citizens who have mental health issues," he said. The city is approaching the two-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Steve Perkins by a DPD officer on Sept. 29, 2023. Numerous protests over the city's handling of the incident have taken place. "My intent isn't necessarily just to get past what happened," Jackson said. "I want to understand how it happened and how to prevent this from ever happening again." He said it's important that Police, Decatur Fire & Rescue and the city's employees are adequately trained to identify and deal with situations like the Perkins and John Scott cases. Scott was arrested April 15 by DPD during an apparent mental health episode in which officers stunned him and struck him several times. At Morgan County Jail, Scott began showing medical distress and was taken to the Decatur Morgan Hospital. He was transferred to Huntsville Hospital, where he died a week later. "We've got to understand how to identify people who are in a crisis situation and know what to do when that situation occurs," Jackson said. The mayor is responsible for presenting the annual budget, with its $96.7 million general fund, to the City Council for approval. Jackson said they need to get away from the budget approach of recent years. He said the mayor now gives the proposed budget to council members for private reviews. The chief financial officer then summarizes it for the public "in an hour or less" at a work session, he said. Jackson said the mayor, council, CFO and department heads "should do line-by-line reviews" in a public meeting like they did early in his tenure on the council. A review like this takes 40 to 60 hours, he said. He said the lengthy review is important to help the council make good decisions. "They have to understand what the requests were that went into the budget, what was denied and why the department wanted to see that item," Jackson said. He said the city needs recreation centers in every district. He said it was a mistake to demolish T.C. Almon Recreation Center in 2023. He opposes the plan to demolish the Aquadome. He also pointed out District 5 doesn't have a rec center. Florida puts to death man who killed wife and children with machete, setting record for most executions there in single year
Starke, Fla. — A man convicted of the 1994 machete killings of his wife and their two children became the ninth person put to death in Florida this year, his death Thursday marking a state record for a single-year execution total since the restoration of the death penalty in the U.S. decades ago. Edward Zakrzewski was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. following a three-drug injection at Florida State Prison near Starke. After the U.S. Supreme Court restored the death penalty in 1976, Florida carried out a one-year high of eight executions in 2014, a total matched this year with a mid-July execution and now exceeded. "I want to thank the good people of the Sunshine State for killing me in the most cold, calculated, clean, humane, efficient way possible. I have no complaint," Zakrzewski said in his final words once the curtain to the death chamber went up shortly after 6 p.m. He was lying on a gurney covered with a white sheet. Before the drugs began flowing, he also quoted from a poem as 14 witnesses looked on, plus media reporters and prison staff. Once the drugs were administered, Zakrzewski began breathing deeply, surrounded by three Corrections Department staff in dark suits. One of them shook Zakrzewski by the shoulders and shouted his name. There was no reaction, and then he was still. No members of the victims' family spoke with reporters afterward. Florida this year has carried out more executions than any other state, while Texas and South Carolina are tied for second with four apiece. A 10th execution is scheduled in Florida on Aug. 19 and an 11th on Aug. 28 under death warrants signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Zakrzewski, 60, was sentenced to death for the June 9, 1994, killings of his 34-year-old wife Sylvia and their children Edward, 7, and Anna, 5, in the Florida Panhandle. Trial testimony showed he committed the killings at their Okaloosa County home after his wife sought a divorce, and he had told others he would kill his family rather than allow that. The woman was attacked first with a crowbar and strangled with a rope, court testimony showed. Both children were killed with the machete, and Sylvia was also struck with the blade when Zakrzewski thought she had survived the previous assault, according to court records. Zakrzewski's lawyers filed numerous appeals over the years, but all were rejected including a final request for a stay of execution denied Wednesday by the Supreme Court. Earlier Thursday, Zakrzewski awoke at 5:15 a.m. and later had a meal that included fried pork chops, root beer and ice cream, said state Department of Corrections spokesman Paul Walker. He said Zakrzewski had one visitor and "remained compliant" as he awaited execution. Until Thursday's execution, 26 men had died by court-ordered execution so far this year in the U.S., while 11 other people were set to be put to death in seven states during the remainder of 2025. Florida was also the last state to conduct an execution with Michael Bernard Bell's lethal injection on July 15. DeSantis signed a warrant for an Aug. 19 execution for Kayle Bates, who was convicted of abducting and killing a woman from an insurance office in 1982. On Wednesday night, DeSantis also issued a death warrant for Curtis Windom, who was convicted of killing three people in the Orlando area in 1992. His execution is set for Aug. 28. Florida uses a three-drug cocktail for its lethal injection: a sedative, a paralytic and a drug that stops the heart, according to the state Department of Corrections. Opponents of Thursday's execution plan pointed to Zakrzewski's military service as an Air Force veteran and the fact that a jury voted 7-5 to recommend his execution, barely a majority of the panel. They noted he could not have received the death penalty with a split jury vote under current state law.
