Paul Simon at the Beacon Theater: Quiet, Intricate, Masterly

New York Times17-06-2025

Paul Simon, 83, has simply changed his mind about a farewell to touring that he announced in 2018, with a valedictory arena tour that ended with a park concert in Queens. He had more to say and sing.
He's back on the road with a relatively intimate, scaled-down postscript: his A Quiet Celebration tour. It's booked into theaters selected for their acoustics, and it's made possible by an advanced monitoring system that helps him cope with his recent severe hearing loss.
Simon played to a reverently attentive audience on Monday night at his hometown sanctuary, the Beacon Theater. When the refurbished, regilded venue reopened in 2009, Simon was its first performer. And on Monday, he stepped onstage smiling broadly and announced, 'I love playing in this room.'
Simon has been making poetic, tuneful pop hits — songs that found mass audiences with lapidary craftsmanship and terse, enigmatic insights — since the 1960s. He had less commercial success with larger formats: his 1980 movie about a songwriter, 'One-Trick Pony,' and his 1998 musical, 'The Capeman.' But he has still been thinking bigger than individual songs.
In 2023, Simon released 'Seven Psalms,' a continuous 33-minute suite of songs about the brevity, fragility and preciousness of life — 'Two billion heartbeats and out / Or does it all begin again?' — and the unknowability of God. 'The Lord is a meal for the poorest of the poor,' he sang, but also, 'The Lord is the ocean rising / The Lord is a terrible swift sword.'

Charlize Theron Uses 1 Harsh Word To Describe Jeff Bezos And His Wedding Guests

We didn't know the next installment in the 'Mad Max' franchise was Furiosa vs. the Broligarchy. Charlize Theron kicked off her fifth annual block party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project— which advances and invests in the health and safety of young people in Africa — Saturday night with an opening quip that made her opinion of Jeff Bezos and his ilk crystal clear. 'I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding,' Theron told event attendees at the Universal Studios backlot, according to the Hollywood Reporter. 'But that's OK because they suck and we're cool.' After the 'Monster' star used one concise word to describe the Amazon founder and the famous attendees of his opulent Venice, Italy, wedding over the weekend, she moved on to thank her attendees for 'taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it's burning because it is.' 'Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and across the globe, we're moving backwards fast,' Theron said. 'Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women's rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise. This isn't just policy, it's personal.' THR notes that as the crowd began to appllaud, she added: 'Yeah, fuck them.' Bezos aligned himself with MAGA in January, when he snagged primo seats at President Donald Trump's inauguration alongside the other leaders of the nation's biggest technology companies, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Apple's Tim Cook and Tesla's Elon Musk. Bezos is seemingly so chummy with the Trump family that the president's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, attended the billionaire's wedding, which Forbes estimates may have cost around $25 million. Other attendees joining the star-studded guest list included Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Tom Brady, Orlando Bloom and the Kardashian/Jenner family, who weren't exactly welcomed in the Italian city. Despite Bezos and his now-wife, Lauren Sánchez, promising to donate money to Venetian charities after they tied the knot, local activist groups, including Greenpeace, protested the wedding. Critics accused the couple of exploiting a city already suffering from overtourism, rising housing prices and the threat of flooding due to environmental factors. But, unlike Trump, it doesn't seem like Theron thinks that protestors suck. The 'Tully' star noted in her speech Saturday that she feels that the 'resistance' against the president's policies is a glimmer of 'hope.' 'There is power in all of us standing up, organizing, protesting, voting and caring for each other, and refusing to accept that this is the new normal,' Theron said, per THR. 'That spirit of resistance, justice and care for each other, that's the spirit that drives the work at CTAOP.' 'And although our focus is on the youth in Southern Africa,' Theron added, 'what we're really talking about here tonight is that all lives should be valued.'

David Bakhtiari pokes fun at Aaron Rodgers's mystery wedding

David Bakhtiari could be heading to "The Island." Then again, maybe he's already there. On Monday, the former Packers tackle tweeted a video from the recent wedding of current Packers quarterback Jordan Love. Bakhtiari added this: "Just happy at least one of my quarterbacks invited me to their wedding." Advertisement Love and Bakhtiari had limited time together. Bakhtiari started only one game in 2023, Love's first year as a starter and the left tackle's last year in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and Bakhtiari had many years together with the Packers. Making the Bakhtiari remark even more interesting is the general haze of uncertainty surrounding the Rodgers wedding. Up to and including whether a wedding even happened. We know, we know. Rodgers doesn't want anyone to talk about his wedding. When you're one of the most famous players in the NFL, however, you don't get to dictate the terms of the attention you receive. Especially when you show up out of nowhere with a wedding ring. Before showing up without it. Before showing up with it prominently in the photo of you signing a contract with your new team. With Rodgers cloaking so much of his life in mystery, it's impossible to know when, where, or who he married. Or if he even is married. Advertisement Maybe the ring is a Costanza-style sociological experiment aimed at seeing whether women will hit on guys who wear wedding bands. Regardless, Bakhtiari went there. We don't know much, but we know Rodgers won't be happy about it.

Olivia Munn Reflects On Being Blamed For Aaron Rodgers' Family Drama

Olivia Munn is trying to set the record straight. The 'Your Friends & Neighbors' actor addressed long-standing rumors she was at the root of ex-boyfriend Aaron Rodgers' estrangement from his family during the Monday episode of 'Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.' Though many blamed Rodgers' rift with his family on Munn during their three-year relationship, the star said she was not a factor in the falling out. 'There's this whole big narrative that stayed with me for so many years, but there was just this dynamic in the family that had nothing to do with me,' she explained. 'It became this whole big thing, and people were like, 'I can't believe her, she's keeping this family apart.'' While Munn said she did have insight into the family feud, she told Shepard it wasn't her business to share. 'People have speculated for many years what was the rift,' she said, 'and I know, but I'm not saying because it's not my story to tell.' Rodgers defended Munn in interviews for the 2024 book 'Out of the Darkness: The Mystery of Aaron Rodgers,' where he told author Ian O'Connor that his ex had 'nothing to do with all the years' of 'deep rooted' tension in his family. The star of 'The Newsroom' said she appreciated him speaking up, even if some people refuse to accept his explanation. 'You've been asking for the longest time. This is the constant conversation. The man himself is saying it. They don't want that answer,' she told Shepard, adding, 'I was really grateful that he did that. Even if people didn't want to take hold of that statement, it made me feel good that it was said.' Aaron Rodgers Says He's Married. So Who's The Lucky Gal?
