Dalai Lama calls India ideal place for Buddhist study amidst growing restrictions

Ladakh: Dalai Lama's recent visit to Ladakh underscored India's unique and vital role as the global center for authentic Buddhist learning and practice, a status that far surpasses China's constrained and politicised approach, according to The Dalai Lama Office.
After a warm, jubilant welcome from Ladakhis, Tibetans, and other local communities, Dalai Lama emphasised the profound importance of India in preserving and nurturing Buddhist traditions, especially in light of the destruction inflicted on Tibetan Buddhist institutions by Chinese authorities.
"The precious traditions that we can learn and implement in daily life have declined in Tibet. Those who fled to India have had the responsibility of preserving these traditions," said Dalai Lama. He recalled the chaos of 1959 that forced him to flee Tibet, and how the Government of India has extended "immense support" and "tremendous assistance" to Tibetan refugees, allowing the revival of monastic universities and rigorous scholarly debate on Buddhist philosophy.
"Unlike China, where religious freedom is severely restricted and political control undermines genuine spiritual teaching, India offers a free and flourishing environment for the study of Buddhism's deepest philosophical texts, including the Middle Way (Madhyamaka) and logic (Pramana) from the ancient Nalanda tradition. "In China, the political situation is not stable, I feel it would be difficult to teach about Buddhism in a country where there is no freedom," said Dalai Lama.
He highlighted how Tibetan Buddhism's rich heritage of dialectical debate and scholarly rigour thrives in India's monastic centers, where students actively engage in philosophical discussions that cultivate insight and compassion. This open intellectual environment contrasts sharply with China's politicised, superficial promotion of Buddhism, often stripped of its transformative spiritual depth.
Furthermore, Dalai Lama praised the Himalayan region's shared language, culture, and Buddhist lineage with Tibetans, stressing the critical role of Indian institutions in upholding and spreading the authentic Dharma for the benefit of all sentient beings.
With India's democratic freedoms, centuries-old Buddhist educational traditions, and ongoing support for Tibetan refugees and monastics, it is clear why India remains the unrivalled sanctuary and beacon for Buddhism's future.

Trade deal uncertainty weighing on private sector investment: UBS

New Delhi: Uncertainty around trade deals is emerging as a major factor holding back investment by India's private corporate sector, according to UBS Securities India. The report attributes the lack of clarity on global trade to countries and pending agreements as a contributing factor to companies' hesitation in investing in long-term capital expenditure (Capex). "From corporates'/investors' point of view, we believe trade deals do reduce business uncertainty--and uncertainty is one of the factors that has constrained India's private corporate sector from investing," the report added. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday expressed concern about the lack of substantial investment by corporate firms despite the capital push by the governments at both the centre and state levels. Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Sitharaman said, "From government, whether it's the state or the centre, the two powerful instruments with which we can influence investment in the country are government spending and also making policies which are attractive. What I'm not speaking about, and you may probably follow up asking me. Is the Indian private sector investment going in pace with the public investments? The first few years after COVID, probably not." "In fact, why would I say COVID? In fact, even from 2019, once the twin balance sheet problem was addressed. And the corporate tax was brought down. We can see that the balance sheets of the corporate sector have really become healthier. But today, what observers tell me and what I keep sometimes talking to industries, business leaders, are they sitting over passive investable funds? Meaning investable funds which are being engaged passively rather than invest in producing more in having capacity expansion and so on. So that's an issue which I would obviously want the industry to speak about," the Union Finance Minister added. Recently, speaking to ANI, Rajiv Memani, President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), countered prevailing market sentiment about private capital expenditure, asserting that while there's a perception of a slowdown, private capex is actually taking place across various industry sectors in the country. Private Capex refers to the investments made by private sector companies in long-term assets like property, equipment, or technology. These Capex are made with the intention of broadening the company's operations. While acknowledging a slowdown in the past 6-8 months, Memani attributed this to external factors rather than structural issues. The private capital expenditure growth in the country registered a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.8 per cent in the last five years from FY21 to FY25E.

The Embassy also said that in case of any emergency, Indian nationals may approach the Embassy of India, Phnom Penh at +855 92881676 or email [email protected]. Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued an advisory on Friday, following clashes near the Thailand-Cambodia border, urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to seven provinces in Thailand. The Mission advised travellers to check for updates from Thai official sources such as TAT Newsroom, the official online newsroom of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The deadly conflict on the Thai-Cambodian border pits a longtime United States ally with decades of experience against a relatively young armed force with close ties to China. The two countries are fighting over territory disputed since colonial power France drew the border between them more than a century ago, CNN reported.
